My teeth marks may still be imprinted on the basketball gym floor. I went to middle school here. It was a progressive school on the 90s.

I didn't do MY homework and research this school enough…read more I had the wrong idea that this was the academic pinnacle for bright students. There are some decent teachers here, but overall, the school is not very impressive. Coming from a Charter School that engaged the whole student, I find Willowside to be lacking in both teaching skill and substance. An example of the lack of ingenuity....the 6th grade got dressed up as cavemen. Really? Cavemen? Dressed up? Caveman dancing????? Why not do a project that actually involves thinking, growing, developing? There is a lot of mock learning here, filling student's head with tidbits of information and having them regurgitate. For all the emphasis the principal put on getting into this school and star testing scores, my daughters numbers dropped more than a bit after her first year in this school. Overall......nothing innovative. If your ideal of a good school is to give students a TON of HOMEWORK (especially 7th grade), meaningless projects, all in all not teaching them to learn and question, this school might be for you. The advanced math program is more than decent. Both secretaries, especially Sophia, are excellent, kind, friendly, and helpful.

My daughter went here and she felt challenged enough. Also her star scores were about the same, and…read morelet me tell you she is a straight A student. She still gets advanced on her star tests and a lot of students have improved here, but now they do Common Core testing here. The school supports interactive and hands on learning with their Renaissance Faire, and Common Core supports that. This school was doing most things the Common Core way before there was Common Core. So now they don't really have to change most of their curriculum because its already Common Core based. Some of the projects are a tad bit odd and the teachers should really change the question they ask for the projects as they can be confusing. Also homework has its pros such as time management and getting you ready for high school and college Charter schools give more homework then regular schools, but this school doesn't have a lot of homework if your child pays attention in class like I mentioned before. The advanced math program is great. The 7th grade teacher teaches Singapore math along with state standards. Also the math teachers are already teaching the way Common Core want them to so they cannot be that bad. The school has some faults yet overall its better than some middle schools here. Overall I suggest you send your kids here because they have a small student population so teachers can work with all the students, interactive and hands on learning, enough homework to prepare your kids for high school and college, Common Core based learning, and great teachers.

Please take the two negative reviews with a big grain of salt. Clearly these families are upset…read morewith their experiences, but it's extremely misleading and incorrect to say that this wonderful school does not value diversity or is some kind of cult. I am a parent of a child there and I couldn't be happier. This school is oriented around Waldorf methods of education, which are all about honoring and supporting the diverse experiences and opportunities of a natural childhood for all children, and minimizing the homogenizing cultural effects of screens and media that are around us all the time. What's more diverse: 20 kids doing 10 different things outside in trees or fields, or 20 kids all talking about the same video game? Families are encouraged to embrace this approach to support their children's growth, and to avoid putting children in a position where they may feel tension or conflict between school and home. It can be distracting and disruptive for kids to come to school talking obsessively about superhero movies or video games when they can instead focus on the biodynamic farm on campus, sing songs, do handwork projects, learn to walk on stilts, or create games together using the natural materials around them. There's even a circus program available for kids. This approach inspires children to be creative, curious, and engaged with the world around them; to develop confidence and practical skills; to minimize peer pressure to conform with unhealthy standards of popular culture; and to avoid the proven negative impacts of screens and social media. Everyone in the class benefits when families are willing to make efforts to embrace this approach, regardless of the extent to which they are successful; and, while there is always some variation in the degree to which families adhere to these principles at home, the school and the school community warmly welcome all families who are choosing Waldorf methods for their children. For anyone who values the Waldorf approach in their child's school experience, there is no better place than Summerfield.

Teachers are sweet and fun and all the kids were playing and saying hi !

The worst thing here the staffs here were very hostile to muslims like myself then as well as insulting my culture and ethnicity as a Yemeni-Acehnese. Especially Stewart Clark, he would call my culture primitive and stupid. I was sent to detention here a lot with little to no justification and the little justifications had literally no proof. I was then sent to a counselor because Assistant Principal Stewart Clark thinks Islam is a mental illness and he even referred me to a psychologist which well it didn't work because I was not mentally ill. And then the higher staffs then sent me on suspension multiple times all because of my views and religion and ethnicities. Some of the students here are islamophobic and have a deep hatred for arabs like myself and some were responsible with making false claims on me then to get me into trouble. I was then assumed to be dangerous by Stewart Clark just because I'm muslim and a Yemeni-Acehnese. I got my backpack searched without permission and was seen as an enemy by him and other staffs like principal Rutherford for my race and religion. Eventually I was expelled. The experience here left me with PTSD to this day. I hope Steward Clark, Principal Rutherford, and the counselor then understands how their bigotry then. I really hope things has changed today from the time I'm there and the school being more accepting to diversity now and has more respect to other backgrounds.
