I recently stayed a few nights at The Morgan State House Inn and had a mostly pleasant stay…read more I thought I was staying in their main house, but they actually had my room a couple doors down in some studios that are apparently also part of the inn. Not a big deal, but I don't know that this is something you'll really know until check-in. The building a few doors down where I stayed also appeared to be historic though a bit less grand on the main level than the main house. The lobby of the building was festively decorated for the holiday. With the bright windows, a sofa, Christmas music playing, and a tree twinkling, one afternoon I couldn't resist getting a little work done in the lobby. My room was cozy with a small kitchenette, bed, arm chairs, and desk. The arm chairs are cute but not very comfortable. The desk was perfectly positioned overlooking the windows, which made for a great spot to work. The bed was pretty uncomfortable and probably needs to be replaced (it was sinking on both sides with a high spot in the middle). For my solo traveling girlies: +The inn is not staffed all night +Doors have old fashioned keys, deadbolts, and chains +The surrounding neighborhood seems nice and safe enough +Parking is slightly off site and requires walking around the block or through the back of the property. If you don't need to bring a car, I'd opt for uber +I think there may be some permanent residents in the additional property (a couple doors down from the main house) All and all, it's a beautiful, historic property, which is one of my favorite sorts to stay in. I wouldn't likely stay there again solo, but would absolutely stay with my partner!

The main one being that I was unable to enjoy the tub as much as I would have liked. The first night the jets didn't work, and someone was nice enough to come by the next day and fix it. Later that night I was looking forward to finally using the tub as intended (and even cancelled a spa day for it) but the other guests had already used all of the hot water by then. I left without getting much of any enjoyment from the tub, which is the main reason I booked the room in the first place. The other issue was the parking situation, which, to be fair, I should have anticipated before booking, considering its location. The parking spot doesn't come with the room, so you must pay extra to access it, and finding it in the dark after dinner is not easy when you have to follow a paper map and there is a line of cars behind you. Walking back to the inn alone in the dark was also pretty unsettling. Overall, this experience was the opposite of relaxing. I will say that the property is very pretty, though, and seemed to be clean.

This is a review of only the cocktail lounge. Friends from out of town were staying in the…read morecarriage house behind the hotel and we agreed to gather in the lounge for a drink or two. The building itself is impressive, although maybe not quite as impressive as the castle-looking building next door. Our party of seven settled in at the bar as there otherwise did not seem to be a large enough table for all of us to gather around in either the main lounge area or a small room off to the side. The dark wood paneled walls, large fireplace, assortment of easy chairs, couches, and high desktop table gave off a feeling of warmth and welcoming. The friendly bartender introduced herself (sorry I've forgotten her name) and informed us that spirit-wise, the bar was capable of preparing the standard, traditional drinks like Manhattans, martinis, etc. All beers were poured from cans, and at my request, she recited the names of about six that were available. I don't believe anyone in our party inquired about the wines that were available. The building simply calls out for an explanation of its history. Upon our request, the bartender offered to provide either the "brief" or "full" option. We requested the full history. She was obviously well up to the task. You would be amazed at the variety of things you could learn here. Just to touch on a few key topics that were mentioned, consider Alexander Hamilton's wife, puffed rice, Bab-o cleanser (cue up the jingle), Bishop Gibbons, and an orthopedic surgeon. I don't know what the normal food arrangements are in the Lounge. I'm guessing that our out-of-town hosts requested some snacks for us as a few bowls appeared with mixed nuts, crackers and cheese, fresh grapes, humus, and warm pretzel/croissant rolls, and a plate of prosciutto wrapped cream cheese. Overall, the atmosphere here is simply friendly and inviting. I think it will become an occasional gathering place for our local friends when looking for a place that is quiet and relaxing.

When I did get through they seemed busy and dismissed my concern that my arrival would be at 1am or later. I was told to call back the next day or just use the app. Our flight was cancelled so we were out on another flight not arriving until 3pm the next day. We paid in full for two nights and I had messaged the hotel to let them know and apparently they messaged back at some point asking if they could check me in. It was late so after waiting a while for a response and nothing I went to bed. Fast forward to morning, they canceled my reservation due to a "no show". I only found out because the app now showed no reservation. They definitely added to the awful travel day by telling me on the phone it was my fault I didn't check in and they had no rooms left. I called again and someone much more helpful said they would figure it out and get me in for a room which they did. Next, our stay. Checked in and were thrilled to see our room was on the 15th floor! Our room key didn't work but luckily a cleaning crew member let us in. We went to the desk and told them and were told maintenance would come and it's probably the battery. Maintenance never came. I messed with the door and if you are able to open the door in less than a second between the green turning red you can get in. Took a dozen try's. Called the front desk and the phone in the room was so muffled. Told them again about the issue and requested extra towels. Waited a few hours then gave up and went to dinner. Came back and didn't bother to ask again but stopped to buy a water and they gave it tow which was nice. I did the same trick to get back in the room. Success after a dozen try's. Later, I really wanted another drink and a cake slice or snack. The room service button did not work. Called the front desk and asked if they had room service and they said yes I'll transfer you. It went to a weird voicemail. So I gave up. They would make more money if the room service calls worked, they had it on the app or at minimum a menu and instructions. The room itself wasn't great but the view was nice. It was fairly clean so that was a plus but definitely very outdated and there was only one towel and two of us. The bed was very comfortable however! Overall I would not recommend staying here due ti lack of care and poor service. Seems really unorganized and nothing actually gets done. Had breakfast after check out and it was pretty good but was $25 and the same as the "free" breakfast we have gotten at other hotels. Parking was $22 a day. Oh and surprise our room key didn't work to let us out the garage either. Had to use the call assistant button and thankfully someone opened the gate. Also, was told we are out of luck for the night we didn't get but paid for which I already expected and honestly think the hotel needs the extra income so they can perhaps invest back into its operations. If you choose to stay here just don't expect much.

My husband liked that they had vegan breakfast "meat" on Saturday (though they didn't seem to have any on Sunday morning). We didn't get to use the pool but we peeked in and it looked very clean. The room was nice and dark with the window treatments they used. The mediocre: bed & pillows weren't 100% as comfortable as we would have hoped. The towels were not soft and fluffy. I also don't like that most hotels, including this one, use a generic type shampoo/soap (I have to use a lot of caution because I have had reactions to those types). The tv had 2 issues - the remote didn't work well and it also needed settings adjusted but wasn't accessible to fix via the room's remote (the picture shows up super bright and lower quality video due to its setting). One elevator was not working while we were visiting (thankfully there was a 2nd one - it just slowed the process of use). The noise from other guests were not a problem - there was a loud'ish fluctuating hum noise heard after midnight that was coming from possibly another floor level. I was able to fall asleep with the noise - it just wasn't as pleasant of a sound as I would normally want. I wouldn't say there was anything truly "bad" about our stay. Overall, I would go again but would hope they might work on some of the issues mentioned - mainly the bed/pillow comfort as a priority.

I had the Cherry Old Fashioned, which the bartender said is the restaurant's most popular cocktail: Bourbon, Bourbon Cherries and muddled fruit. For $12, it was a bargain! There are two seating areas outside, each having a fire pit table. They were the highlight of our stay. We imbibed our cocktails and chatted there. Sitting by the fire was a pleasant way to unwind after a hard day's work. I highly recommend the Courtyard Albany Airport, for business or pleasure.
