This is the neighborhood park for the Colony Estates community in Cooper City. It is a neighborhood known for nearly a thousand single family homes and prized for being quiet and family friendly. Colony Park is open from sunrise to sunset. At only 1/4 of an acre, it is considered a pocket park. Pocket parks are generally less than half an acre in size and can offer a variety of amenities for the public. This type of mini park arose from a desire within communities to create spaces for outdoor recreation instead of adding more buildings or leaving land vacant. While small, the park is still enjoyable for taking kids out to play. There is a small, shade-covered playground with a slide and climbing equipment. The park also features shade trees, benches, a picnic table, and open space. However, there is no dedicated parking or restroom facilities. An important point to note is that the park is not fenced in, so you'll need to keep an eye on children to ensure they don't wander off. It ended up being the perfect place to sit for a few minutes while I planned my next destination. If you're looking for a larger park with more recreational amenities, consider a county park like Brian Piccolo Sports Park.

About Jaco Pastorius III - In 2007, the City named its new downtown park in honor of former Oakland Park resident Jaco Pastorius (1951-1987). John Francis Pastorius III ("Jaco") is known amongst many in the music industry as the "The World's Greatest Bass Player." His tremendous skill on the bass guitar was matched only by his skill as a composer. Jaco grew up in Oakland Park and attended Northeast High School. His innovative techniques and challenging compositions forever changed the landscape of jazz and rock music. Jaco taught the bass guitar as an adjunct instructor in the University of Miami's Jazz Department. In 1974, Jaco began playing with his friend and later famous jazz guitarist, Pat Metheny. Jaco's first album, produced by Columbia Records, entitled "Jaco Pastorius" (1976) was a breakthrough album for the electric bass. One of the buildings has a larger than life wall mural with Jaco's full size picture for all to admire and see. The events here are usually free and security checks everyone on the way IN. Usually they don't allow water or any other liquids to enter the premises when events are taking place.

The park is located in the Coral Ridge neighborhood on the corner of Bayview Drive and Sunrise Blvd. It can be called an urban park since it's so close to many buildings and businesses. It has two boat ramps, basketball courts, playground, picnic tables, tennis courts, recreation center, walking/biking trails and on-site kayak, paddle-board and jet ski rentals. For those who boat, there is ocean access from this park, but because of the fixed bridge at Sunrise Blvd. boats are limited to about 9 feet of clearance. There is a water ski area just north from the park on the Middle River. Boats 21 feet or less engaging in water-sport activities are limited to 30 mph.

The SE 13th St. Park does not have the usual amenities you might expect but t is still worth a visit. SE 13th St Park is located at the end of a neighborhood that lies between Federal Highway and the Intracoastal Waterway. It is south of Atlantic Boulevard. The neighborhood of single family homes was built in the 1960's and is prized because there is no thru traffic. This small passive pocket park lies between the neighborhood and the Intracoastal. While the park is small, its main attribute is a stunning view of the Intracoastal. There are three benches where you an sit and enjoy the breeze while watching the boat traffic pass by. Residents of the neighborhood use the park to watch the fireworks on the Fourth of July and the Pompano Beach Boat Parade in December. The only visitors I saw on an early Saturday evening where some iguanas scurrying on the sea wall. This little known park is such a peaceful place to relax and take in the view.

DC Alexander Park was designed to address coastal flooding and saltwater exposure by reintroducing native dune and maritime hammock ecosystems. Storm surges are mitigated by vegetated dunes and rubberized surfaces. A reintroduced coastal hammock absorbs rainfall and saltwater while shade is provided by native trees like Green Buttonwood, Gumbo Limbo, and Seagrape. My favorite feature of the park is a 25-foot cantilevered overlook. \When you climb to the top you get a panoramic view of Ft. Lauderdale Beach and the new creative play area with slides, climbing ropes, and swings. Although this park is only 1.2 acres, the design makes clever use of the limited space. TheLOOP encompasses Las Olas Oceanside Park, Las Olas Intracoastal Promenade Park, The Sunset Terrace at the Las Olas Beach Garage, and DC Alexander Park. This holiday season TheLOOP brought Rink on the Beach, an outdoor ice skating rink to Las Olas Oceanside Park. Las Olas Intracoastal Park is located on the beach side of the base of the Dwight L. Rogers Memorial Causeway which carries vehicles over the Intracoastal on LAs Olas Boulevard. For years this park has been an underutilized space but all that is changing with recent park improvements. Construction is currently underway on the promenade running along the intracoastal and under the bridge. Parks under bridges are a great way to use space for recreation that would be otherwise wasted. Currently Las Olas Intracoastal Promenade Park is a large open space where the city is able to stage events. There are a few metered spaces along the perimeter of the park and the Las Olas Beach Garage is across the street. The highlight of Las Olas Intracoastal Promenade Park is undoubtedly its stunning waterfront promenade. Located on the banks of the Intracoastal Waterway, this park offers stunning views of cruise ships, mega yachts, and sailboats passing by. The park has a serene ambiance combined with breathtaking views. The park also has a paved walkway and benches where visitors can relax while enjoying the scenic views. I often see people from the nearby condominium exercising and walking their dogs here. The park will be a real show stopper once the city completes the improvements. Whether you're a nature enthusiast, a fitness buff, or simply seeking a peaceful retreat, Las Olas Intracoastal Promenade Park offers something for everyone.

Lauderdale purchased this property for 3.3 million dollars from brothers Fred and Bob Betz who operated a tropical plant nursery here for 29 years. The brothers purchased R.H. Gore Orchids and turned it into a tropical plant nursery. Half the money for the purchase came from the county's Safe Parks and Land Preservation Bond Program, approved by voters in 2000 with the other half provided by the city. Courted by developers through the years, the brothers resisted selling until they saw the offer to turn the land into a park. They signed an agreement with the city stipulating that the land will always remain a park. The brothers have strong ties to the city. In 1954 their father and uncle opened The Chemist Shop, a drug store on Las Olas Boulevard. Once the park opened Fred Betz said "We'll come to the property and have lunch at a picnic table under the large sea grape tree." The city put in many lovely park amenities. These include a bicycle rack, shade covered exercise equipment, open area for play, benches, playground, picnic pavilion with tables, and exercise path around the park perimeter. This is a wonderful place for the community to take the kids to play, workout, picnic, and enjoy out beautiful weather. I think the Betz family is pleased to know that the park is being enjoyed by the community they so loved.
