I went into see Dr. Portnoy because I was having severe issues breathing through my nose. I had been suffering for 12 years with a deviated septum and a bone spur preventing my nasal passageways from getting enough air. I finally set up a consultation and met with Dr. Portnoy. I have to say, I love his disposition and bedside manner. He is very thorough in his evaluation and we discussed the next steps in order to see what all was really going on. I received my CAT scan, went in for my second visit with Dr. P and we scheduled the surgery to correct my severely deviated septum. I am now around two months out of surgery and I have to say it was the best thing I've ever done in my life. I wish I would've done it sooner. He is one of the best doctors ever!!! He called the next day to check on me and make sure I was feeling OK. The surgery went smoothly and he reiterated that I had a severely deviated septum that that he straightened. I can honestly say I breathe so much more freely and my quality of life has substantially improved. I'm so happy to say that I am no longer the "tissue girl" always blowing her nose. Dr Portnoy is hands down my favorite ENT physician in Miami. I recently saw him for a lump in the back of my throat which had been bothering me for about 3 months. From the moment he saw me, by just looking at my throat and feeling around the mass he said to me: I think most likely what you have is a squamous cell of the throat. He helped expedite de biopsy and imaging, which confirmed the results. He also helped expedite the referral to my preferred cancer center, where I just underwent surgery 1 week prior, which seems to have been curative. I cannot thank him enough. Avoid if possible A few years ago, I was referred to Dr. Portnoy for some itching in my ear canal. He said it was a little red and prescribed some drops which seemed to work. This fall, I noticed some itching again and I called his office to see if the prescription could be refilled. As I was making my request to the person who answered the phone, she told me that the doctor wished to speak with me. Dr. Portnoy got on the phone and explained that while he would refill my prescription over the phone, I should get a referral and come see him after the Covid lockdowns had ended to make sure nothing else is going on with my ears. I agreed and thanked him and told him that I would get a referral from my primary physician and come see him in the following weeks when I was out of quarantine. About ten days later, found out he submitted a bill to my insurance for $400 for this unscheduled "telemedicine visit," which apparently had been coded as a FaceTime chat. My insurance had only reimbursed him $300 for those five minutes, and an additional $80 was due of me for not having a valid referral on file at the time of my call. In the interim, I had obtained a referral from my provider, valid starting the day after I called his office. I called his office with this information and asked that the claim for our phone call be resubmitted. I was told this was not possible; I asked if I could speak with the doctor and was told no, and I asked if billing could explain to the doctor what had occurred. I received no response other than another letter requesting payment. At that point, I sent Dr. Portnoy's office a check in the amount of my usual office co-pay, explaining that if they had verified my insurance - as they should have for any office visit - before submitting this claim, their office would have gotten paid, and my co-pay is all I would owe. And yet, today I received another letter demanding payment of my outstanding bill. I'm at a bit of a loss as to whether Dr. Portnoy would prefer to adjudicate this publicly, or what level of judgement prevents him from accepting $320 for a five-minute phone call. Nevertheless, it safe to say beyond any measure of doubt that I will discontinue seeing care from this practitioner. read more

It's rare these days to find a real doctor at heart, not just on paper, one who walks in the room, greets you with a smile, sits down, looks you right in the eye and sincerely asks, "How are you? What's going on?" What brought me to Dr. Portnoy was the discovery of a deviated septum told to me by a pompous ENT doctor I had seen before him. That lead me to do my research of finding a great ENT doctor that specializes in surgeries of the nose. Bam, Dr. Portnoy. After examining me I found out my condition was worse than I thought. Not only did I have a deviated septum, one side of my nasal passages was nearly blocked, and the other was narrow. He gave me the option of surgery. I said yes. Doc P thoroughly explained my entire condition from how it was affecting my breathing to how my quality of life was going to change for the better once my nasal passages were opened. Boy was he right. So, surgery day. I was treated professionally and with care and respect from the moment I checked in to the moment I left, by him and his staff. To those of you who will undergo surgery for a deviated septum and/or opening of the nasal passages, the first three to four days will suck. Believe me. Expect bleeding and to feel like the Hulk punched you in the nose. You won't be breathing through your nose for a few days. Sense of smell will be compromised during the healing process. You'll adapt, trust me. After a few weeks I was able to breathe like never before. And now I can actually reach REM sleep and dream, something I struggled with for a long time because I couldn't breathe properly. Snoring has been reduced significantly. I went to see him a few days after I broke a nose, during the period in which your nose can still be set without having to re-break it. Dr. Portnoy told me my nose was fine -- not crooked and that my septum wasn't deviated -- and reassured me that standard practice is to wait until it's healed to set it, if it needs to be set. Dr. Portnoy kept me waiting for 45 minutes. His staff initially told me I didn't need an x-ray (what?) but Portnoy said I did, so I had to spend another hour getting one and then came back and was kept waiting for another 45 minutes. All in all, it took 3 hours to get through the appointment -- in the middle of a workday. Portnoy was rude and dismissive. He talked over me. He gave me about 3 minutes of his time and made it very clear that he didn't think I was worth any more than that. He told me I was fine, even though I kept telling him my nose felt crooked and I was having trouble breathing. I wasn't made comfortable by his nonchalant attitude or bedside manner, so I got a second opinion a few weeks later -- at which point it was too late to set my nose without getting surgery / having it re-broken. Long story short, my nose WAS crooked, my septum IS deviated, and I will now have to get a painful and expensive procedure if I ever want to breathe normally again. This guy is a stupid asshole and I would never recommend him to anyone. Just another quack of a NYC doctor. He's clearly far more concerned with raking in the big bucks from performing plastic surgery and other expensive procedures than doing what's actually right or best for his patients. I had difficulty breathing, and Dr. Portnoy suggested several procedures that helped improve my breathing significantly, including septoplasty, cyst removal and turbinate reduction. Dr. P is the man! F-ed up noses just run in my family, and no I'm not taking about shape or size, the men of my family have perfectly good looking noses. I'm taking about turbinates and septums, not sure what those are? Well, Dr. P does. Anyway, this little recap should help. Can you barely breathe through your nose? Are you a consistent mouth breather, mouth breathing sleeper, sometimes snorer, especially when you have a cold? If you said yes to all those, like I said yes, then you likely have some nose issues. It started to affect my ability to run, to sleep, and mouth breathing isn't great for your gums or teeth for that matter, that I finally said F**K it, this sucks and I'm gonna get it fixed. Enter Dr. P. I don't recall if we did x-rays or he just looked up there with one of those magnifying scope things, but he thoroughly explained what was going on. Turbinates are these walls of cartilage in your nose - they're good for you, but some people's are just too thick. They literally squeeze down on the passage ways, also, you've got a slightly deviated septum. Alright - super! Next, we went over options, what insurance may or may not cover, the procedure and also, what would happen if I just opted to do nothing. He was honest about that too - you'll be fine, but you'll have all the same complaints and discomforts you have now. I'm an active guy, so I wasn't having that. It was worth the time, money and recovery for me to go through with the procedure. Speaking of that...it was 1 day, in and out, and back to work a couple days later. I believe he used a laser to trim down the turbinates, creating more space and set the deviated septum which required a couple stitches. The follow up appointments were all easy to set, he explained recovery, what's good and bad and here I am today breathing through my nose like it ain't no thang. Biking feels better, sleeping is solid, I rarely snore (my wife is pretty happy about that) and I got Dr. P to thank for that. His office even went to battle with insurance for me, saving me a good chunk of money (forgot the woman's name who helps with this but she was a gem). read more

Dr. Portnoy was recommended to me and I was very excited to work with him. At one point he told me to cease nasal cortisone injections, which I did. When I informed him of this, he inexplicably stormed out of the room, slammed my folder on the reception table, yelled in the hallway, "I need to cool down"- and didn't return. Thereafter, I heard "he was having a bad day," paid my copay and left. As chronic pain makes you do things you never thought you would, I recently emailed his office, requesting to come in - perhaps, I was missing something. The response I received was that "Dr. Portnoy looked at my charts and couldn't help me." To this day, I still don't know what sparked his sudden outrage and erratic behavior. I saw Dr. Portnoy many times over the course of 1-2 years for issues related to frequent sinus infections. His bedside manner was sometimes brusque and occasionally rude. He was often physically rough when undertaking delicate procedures (scoping). Eventually, he informed me that there was nothing more he could do and suggested that I see another doctor. He gave me the impression that he thought I was wasting his time and my complaints were not legitimate. Fortunately, this led me to see a kind, patient and good diagnostician at NYU. He had me get an MRI and saw significant blockages in my sinuses. He performed surgery and my quality of life improved markedly. My experience seeing Dr. Portnoy was the worst I've had with a medical professional. While I'm please that other reviewers have had a good experience with him, the doctor they describe is almost unrecognizable to me. read more

I went to Dr. Portnoy for a problem with my stuck-open eustachian tube. Half the appointment he spent looking at the computer trying to figure out what was wrong with my ear. He finally diagnosed me but said he didn't know how to fix it and sent me on my way. No referrals, no help, that's it goodbye. I'm terribly disappointed. I will say that he was a nice enough guy! I've seen Dr. Portnoy a couple of times. I think he's perfectly fine as a doctor - good bedside manner, answered all my questions, gave good explanations. It's the wait time that's horrendous. On a recent visit the waiting room was so full that a couple of people sat on the floor. We were told that a patient had to have an emergency procedure done so I waited an hour and a half before seeing the doctor. That I understand. However, more recently the waiting room was empty except for one person. I waited 30 mins just to be escorted to the examination room and then sat for another 40 minutes just waiting to be seen. I didn't want to go to the ER because I felt that I would get less of a scar if I went to a plastic surgeon. My family has been going to Dr. Portnoy since 2006. My husband was the first to go to him with tinnitus. My son had a deviated septum that Dr. Portnoy corrected beautifully with surgery. I've seen Dr. Portnoy for various problems: A salivary gland problem, allergies, sinus, infection and most recently, what I thought was a sinus problem, but Dr. Portnoy correctly diagnosed as TMJ. He is an astute diagnostician and an excellent surgeon. He has a caring manner, is thorough, very smart and aside from the excellent care he's given my family; I've witnesses his gentleness and patience with his older patients. His staff is wonderful. Jacob, who runs the front desk, and Jean, the office manager, have been there for years, and they are the nicest, most knowledgeable and helpful people you'll find in a physician's office. The other thing I really appreciate about the office is that it's spotlessly clean. Yes, sometimes you have to wait a bit, if there's an emergency, but most times I've seen the Doctor in less than 15 minutes. I had been experiencing severe pain in both ears for several days when I went to see Dr. Portnoy after finding him on yelp. I had misdiagnosed myself with ear infections, but it turned out I had eczema in the canals and the skin was irritated and inflamed. I couldn't believe it and would have never been able to home treat it without Dr. Portnoy's help. His office staff is nice and they were even really helpful in dealing with an insurance situation. His office's filing system is all electronic, which made the process really smooth, especially when it came to getting a prescription. I hope I don't have to see Dr. Portnoy again anytime soon, but I'll gladly recommend him to anyone seeking a knowledgable, efficient ENT. read more

Dr. Portnoy is an absolutely outstanding ENT (Ear, Nose & Throat Doctor) who has years of experience. He is patient, bright, willing to listen, and extremely thorough. I had been having ear pains after taking Murine Ear Wax Removal System for a few days. I was able to get a same-day appointment with Dr. Portnoy to take a look and see what the problem was. To begin, his staff are some of the most polite and compassionate people I have ever met. I was greeted with a smile and filled out the small medical form that they gave me. I waited about 20 minutes to see Dr. Portnoy (which isn't really that long to wait) in a very nice waiting room with a ton of magazines to keep you occupied. Dr. Portnoy enters and immediately introduces himself with a handshake and a smile and asks me what brings me in. I explained my symptoms and he went right to work checking things that I didn't even know were related to my ears. It was by far the most thorough ear examination I have ever had. He told me what he thought the problem was but wasn't sure why it was brought on by the Murine. I was told the pain would go away after a day or two and to take Motrin in the meantime. Sure enough, it is two days later and my ears feel great. Dr. Portnoy also has an excellent Audiologist in his office who performed a hearing evaluation on me (I had mentioned that i thought my hearing my be better out of my left ear). She was very comforting and encouraging and made me feel at ease with the whole thing. Overall, everybody that I had contact with at this office was brilliant. They were all very well trained, attentive, responsive, and possibly most importantly NICE! If you are having any ear, nose or throat problems or are in need of facial plastic or reconstructive surgery (I neglected to mention that facial plastic and reconstructive surgery is one of the main focuses of the office) then this should be your first stop. I thought that the reviews must have been exaggerated, but figured he still must be pretty good and figured I would check him out. I went in because I was sick and tired of getting sinus infections and always being sick. They were able to see me pretty quickly (I think it was the next day or two?). The staff was immediately welcoming and friendly. Everyone here smiles all the time! It must be a great place to work. Anyway, the doctor was so friendly and immediately told me what he thought about my situation. He sent me off for a CAT scan to confirm and when we met again, he was right. He gave me some options and we decided on moving forward with surgery for my sinusitis and deviated septum. And - can't believe I'll admit this online to strangers - I decided on a little plastic surgery. On the plastic surgery, I have to say - this man was completely no pressure. He helped me completely understand what we could realistically achieve and really wanted subtle changes that still let me look like me, but gave me the confidence I wanted. I'm now just over 5 weeks out of surgery and am so thrilled with all of the results. Not only are the results great, but the entire staff has been extremely friendly from start to finish. When I walk in the office, they all say hi to me BY NAME! They all check in on me and seem to genuinely care. Some family came in to help me out post surgery and met the staff and walked out saying that they must be the nicest doctor's office out there. I guess this is enough gushing. Point is - Dr Portnoy is an amazing doctor who knows his stuff. He's efficient yet friendly. His office is clean. His staff is welcoming. I highly recommend everyone to go see Dr Portnoy! read more

I went to Dr. Portnoy several years ago for a surgical consult for my sleep apnea. Dr. Portnoy did a thorough exam and suggested a treatment plan. Unfortunately, the surgery needed to be postponed (for medical reasons) but in the event I'm ever able to reconsider it Dr. Portnoy is the ENT doctor I would have do it. His office staff was also very helpful and facilitated all of the necessary pre-op approvals. In addition, they followed up with me as necessary (but not in a pestering kind of way).
