As you probably already know, Carnegie Mellon University (CMU) is one of the top-ranked…read moreuniversities in the United States and world and has top-ranked programs such as computer science, engineering, statistics, business, and psychology. I have never been a student, faculty member, or staff member here, but my husband did teach short courses in the computer-science department years ago, and I recently used CMU's Hunt Library to search for grant opportunities. As an outsider, I approached the information desk to ask for a free, temporary username and password to use their grant database GrantForward. The employee asked another employee about it a few times, looked at my ID, gave me the username and password, and kindly walked me to another floor. The library looked old and like it needed to be remodeled, and a small section of it was being remodeled. Noisy construction was occurring. I felt surprised that not many computers were there. One computer would not turn on, another computer needed an administrator to fix it, and finally the third computer allowed me to log in. The GrantForward database gave me very useful information about grants. The computer, though, logged me off about every two hours without giving any notice, so I lost my place the first time and had to sign back in. In the end, I felt thankful that CMU allowed me to use their library.

I enjoyed walking around campus and catching the art vibe - lots of cool things to see on foot.read more

I spent five years at Duquesne, and if I had to do it all over again, I wouldn't change a thing!…read more I moved out to Pittsburgh for college all the way from California--state, not California, PA. Duquesne was such a welcoming campus, and all of the teachers and staff are very caring. There are so many great resources, both on campus and off campus within a short distance. Duquesne's campus is like a world all it's own, being nestled on the Bluff right in downtown. I graduated two years ago, and I'm still thankful for the education I received. I moved back to California, and I have to admit that I miss Pittsburgh and Duquesne a lot! (as an aside, my brother also went to a Catholic university in Chicago that cost almost $10k MORE each year, and the resources at his school weren't nearly as nice as at Duq.) Edit 12/24/14: P.S. Someone else (who studied math) mentions in a 1-star review that Duquesne doesn't have any rigorous science programs--that couldn't be FURTHER from the truth. I graduated with a science degree and believe it was a FANTASTIC program and that every other science student I came across in other programs thought the same thing. With my education I believe I could get a job at any lab in the country.

Made Deans list thrice but always maintained a 3.5 ...My second oldest ? Made Deans list all but one semester every year . Duquesne NEVER raised their scholarship $ but consistently increased tuition. My son? Dropped out before his SR YR to avoid further debt ( he was at 12k deficit) . They went to Duquesne on promise of full scholarship - to avoid debt . It was a LIE . Despite their exceptional academic performance ? They incurred debt . ( If they had played sports the scholarships would have met their increased tuition ...being Deans list students? Meant NOTHING ) . I have 5 children - their 2 younger sibs are at YSU which "locks" tuition upon commitment . They were both offered DU schol - Their older sibs ( alumni ) told them NOT to do it due to the absolute misery of FA / debt / cost ...My youngest son ? (16) is being courted by DU and has already told their recruiters ? " Don't bother - I saw what my big brother has been through". I feel only guilt at encouraging my older children to go there . The DU "academic scholarships" are a lie ....they raise tuition yearly but not scholarships. ( No matter how exceptional the academic performance.) I have nothing but regret for encouraging my children to go there. The education? Top notch- no argument . But the financial misery they lied / conned/ scaammed my children into? REPULSIVE !

The…read morepreyed on dumb jocks and cheerleaders who were entitled and told them that they ran the school and could attack the teachers to make them happy. The education was low quality and they fired hundreds of teachers for enforcing class rules and for complaining that the students were getting criminally violent with them. Their students have an attitude problem and were trained to defy authority in all areas and were told they were in charge and ran the school to keep them. This was based on fraud from the director Linda, the unemployable confused senior who flirted with the students and told them not to listen to the teachers. The students don't show up for work, come to job interviews in tshirts and tennis shoes and fight with the owners that they'll work when they feel like it and no one tells them what to do. They should have been arrested.

We also did not cover a good method for making a portfolio of our work. The ones we made were bare bones, and did not incorporate GitHub. I was in the computer programming division. Other program choices seemed more or less successful, though mine was probably one of the better ones. There are some awkward elements to going here. I didn't expect or need anything like this, but there are no after-school programs. You have to dress business casual every day, which is not great. Alumni services are bad. I was promised lifetime service but have had trouble getting any since graduation. I spoke with their placement people for almost a year with barely any results (only maybe 4 jobs sent to me and I applied to over 200, no joke). The school is also not regionally accredited, so credits are not accepted at most universities outside of the Pittsburgh area. I was accepted to Troy University in Alabama, but they would not accept my credits. The school was not a total waste, as it did get me entry to much better-paying jobs. Our training in how to pass job interviews and how to write resumes was pretty good. The problem is that continuing education and career services are so bad due to this college, and those were promised to me from the start.
