I spent five years at Duquesne, and if I had to do it all over again, I wouldn't change a thing! I moved out to Pittsburgh for college all the way from California--state, not California, PA. Duquesne was such a welcoming campus, and all of the teachers and staff are very caring. There are so many great resources, both on campus and off campus within a short distance. Duquesne's campus is like a world all it's own, being nestled on the Bluff right in downtown. I graduated two years ago, and I'm still thankful for the education I received. I moved back to California, and I have to admit that I miss Pittsburgh and Duquesne a lot! (as an aside, my brother also went to a Catholic university in Chicago that cost almost $10k MORE each year, and the resources at his school weren't nearly as nice as at Duq.) Edit 12/24/14: P.S. Someone else (who studied math) mentions in a 1-star review that Duquesne doesn't have any rigorous science programs--that couldn't be FURTHER from the truth. I graduated with a science degree and believe it was a FANTASTIC program and that every other science student I came across in other programs thought the same thing. The education ? Top notch . Care for students ? Less than a star . My 2 oldest children went to Duquesne on full scholarship . The oldest ? Made Deans list thrice but always maintained a 3.5 ...My second oldest ? Made Deans list all but one semester every year . Duquesne NEVER raised their scholarship $ but consistently increased tuition. My son? Dropped out before his SR YR to avoid further debt ( he was at 12k deficit) . They went to Duquesne on promise of full scholarship - to avoid debt . It was a LIE . Despite their exceptional academic performance ? They incurred debt . ( If they had played sports the scholarships would have met their increased tuition ...being Deans list students? Meant NOTHING ) . I have 5 children - their 2 younger sibs are at YSU which "locks" tuition upon commitment . They were both offered DU schol - Their older sibs ( alumni ) told them NOT to do it due to the absolute misery of FA / debt / cost ...My youngest son ? (16) is being courted by DU and has already told their recruiters ? " Don't bother - I saw what my big brother has been through". I feel only guilt at encouraging my older children to go there . The DU "academic scholarships" are a lie ....they raise tuition yearly but not scholarships. ( No matter how exceptional the academic performance.) I have nothing but regret for encouraging my children to go there. The education? Top notch- no argument . But the financial misery they lied / conned/ scaammed my children into? I really enjoy the school and the education i've received so far. and now that i'm graduating i think that i'm happy i got a pretty decent education. of course the school has some programs that are better than others, but of all the schools i've met people in, most students at duquesne are always studying or worrying about school work, which is actually a good sign. other schools, students are more worried about parties then their exams. the school is working on upgrading and adding more features that are needed all around, kids still have good times too at school concert/events, wireless is okay, library is okay, computer labs are everywhere, free school printing, sports are decent, greek life of some sort, dining is okay, jamba juice, two starbucks, barnes and noble, apartments and dorms... overall good school to get your education at. o yea.. the rings are top 10 most recognized rings in the world... I'd qualify Duquesne as a school with a lot of solid potential that hasn't yet become what it could be. The university has obvious financial difficulties despite what undergraduates assure me is relatively high tuition. It seems like the strongest programs here are pharmacy/nursing, business, healthcare ethics, and psychology. read more

Duquesne is a Catholic University with strong programs in several areas including sciences and law. It is a beautiful urban campus affording it many of the amenities of the city. Atop the Duquesne campus affords beautiful views of the city. They have good sports programs and a lighted football field has allowed it to be used as a venue for many high school football games over the years. Many cultural events are held at the A. J. Palumbo Center which is home also to their Dukes basketball team (parenthetically named after Antonio J. Palumbo). This beautiful and vibrant campus is pleasant to visit for sightseeing, one of its many events or for its scholarly pursuits. read more

I went here for a seminar a couple of weeks ago. The campus is small, intimate, and actually has a lot of character. I didn't enjoy the science building or facilities much- they seemed to be really outdated. And I hated walking up that damn hill to get to campus! read more

I am very disappointed in the education I received at this school. I attended the school of nursing. When considering to attend this school I saw that they have a good reputation within the city of Pittsburgh. However, once I graduated I noticed that Duquense is ONLY good at protecting their reputation. The school of nursing is beyond unorganized. They rather test versus teach. The instructors do not lecture, they read from powerpoints made by the book publishers - countless hours were wasted. The instructors cannot answer in depth questions on the content... Instead of answering relevant questions about the content they're teaching, they attack you for asking a question, then they belittle and embarrass you. They are not very forth coming with the students. The school of nursing WILL NOT ALLOW ANY STUDENT TO GRADUATE THEIR PROGRAM UNLESS THEY CAN GET A 925 ON THE EXIT HESI!!!! They have 30% of their graduating class who do not received their degrees. THESE STUDENTS ARE EXCLUDED FROM NCLEX PASS RATE STATISTICS and it makes Duquense appear as if they are teaching excellent professionals... I can't stress more how THIS IS FAR FROM THE TRUTH. Students do not pass the EXIT HESI because 70% of the content on the HESI was not taught during the program. More than 80% of my class failed the exam on the first try. Duquense has done a very good job at hiding this from the public. The exams given throughout the program have grammatical errors and words spelled incorrectly and they expect you to disregard the errors and select the correct answers anyway. The instructors claim they don't know what's on their own tests, so they can do only but so much to prepare you. They have technology that they want the students to use and the instructors have no clue as to how to operate the software being used. They spend a lot of the time blaming 3rd party companies and distancing themselves from being held accountable for failing to provide a comprehensive education. We lost a tremendous amount of class time cause of technical issues. Through all the disorganization and the incompetent teaching, the instructors expect you to trust they are teaching you the correct information and for you to do well regardless of all the mishaps. Our critical care instructor told us just before midterms that she is taking heavy narcotics and it's possible she may give inaccurate information.... REALLY???? Aside from the inability for them to overcome their own learning objectives, the clinical experience was awful. Students are sitting and standing around with nothing to do. The hospitals let us know in their own way that they do not want us there. The staff refused to work with us 50% of the time. This prevented us from receiving the hands on experience needed in the nursing profession. This is very hazardous to patient safety. No one will be held accountable until something tragic happens - it's really sad. Duquense is placing nurses in the workforce who have no clue of how to care for patients properly. The best thing the school of nursing is doing is protecting their reputation by placing students in the workforce that can pass a EXIT HESI and boost their pass rate numbers. read more

While nothing is truly perfect, they strive to proactively improve upon anything that is less than suitable by any standard. this is the absolute worst building you could ever live in. A hole in my ceiling on the top floor formed after Duquesne was aware of leaks on the roof but refused to fix them. The hole was about three feet wide and was left there for THREE MONTHS (an entire semester). There was so much black mold in the ceiling to the point where my asthma got so bad i had to do breathing treatments daily because Duquesne would not move me to another room. And when the hole was fixed they put a piece of plastic over the hole and painted it and left debris all over my room and didn't clean it. My refrigerator broke the day after i bought over a hundred dollars worth of groceries and they refused to reimburse me. I left a few plastic bins outside my room when moving in, like other people did, except for me when i put them out there for an hour they trash compacted them and acted like it wasn't a big deal. The ceiling in my shower also started to fall in exposing black mold. They simply painted over it and did nothing about the mold. When the new company took over they insisted on using online work orders, which i found out they ignore and never actually respond to the work orders. This year, residents are paying the same amount to live in the building for nine months as they did in past years for 12 months so it is a total ripoff. Also they frequently come into your room unannounced to work that they said they would be doing over the summer, so there is no reason for them to come in during the school year when they are kicking residents out to do this work in the summer. DO NOT LIVE HERE IF YOU CAN HELP IT. IT IS TOTAL AND COMPLETE HELL I PROMISE read more

I graduated in 1964, but return regularly to campus to see the tremendous progress made over the years, The original campus, hand built by priests in the 1870's, has been a work-in-progress--and that is a GOOD thing. I know many people working on Campus. And they are great and smart. The many new buildings are architectural beauties. But the best and most wonderful thing about Duquesne is "the people", both students and staff. Catholic Duquesne gave Jewish me a GREAT education and wonderful memories. I am in contact with my fraternity brothers on a regular basis and we all have nothing but wonderful memories of our time on campus. And we do our part to make Duquesne even better. read more
