About 3 months ago, on March 5, 2019, I had surgery to remove a cancerous prostate. I'm on the road to a complete recovery with a 0 PSA and all functions returning to normal. It's unusual for me to leave reviews, but in gratitude for lucking into a group of such excellent medical professionals, I wanted to pay it forward a bit to other men who may be facing this. Dr. William K. Johnston III, who performed the da Vinci Robotic Surgery, to remove my prostate is top tier at this. He does a couple hundred of these a year. He is well prepared to handle any unforeseen contingency's that may be found while performing this surgery. It is readily apparent that he has confidence and a strong passion for his work. His focus is not just on removing the cancerous prostate to save your life, put to carefully spare the nerves and reconnection of the urethra to minimize recovery time of erectile and incontinence functions. The follow up care is extraordinary. A great listener and communicator, you couldn't hope to have a better or more skilled doctor for this operation. Dr. Fadi A. Eliya, who did the biopsy and diagnosis, and referred me to Dr Johnston for the surgery, was excellent also. I defiantly would be the last one in line to have anything inserted into my exits, but Dr. Fadi made the process much more bearable then I had imagined. The Michigan Institute of Urology, in my interactions at four of their offices, seems to be a well run organization. Besides the doctors and nurses, the girls that run the phones and work the counters without exception, were cheerful and upbeat (unlike the typical crabby old bitches that act like you're an inconvenience or their doing you a favor that you typically find in these positions). I've owned and managed several small businesses, so I can't help myself in a peripheral "undercover boss" kind of way, to analyze businesses that I come in contact with, I find generally when the people at the bottom of the pyramid are happy in their jobs, the people at the top are doing something right. In conclusion, I have this message to men who find themselves in this unfortunate situation. I'm probably the opposite of a hypochondriac, but if you have any symptoms of prostate cancer, do not ignore or delay having it checked out. Although the whole process is rather unpleasant, there was nothing that was really painful about it. For a couple a days after surgery you will be sore like you were on the wrong side of an ass kicking. Catheters are no fun, but not as bad as imagined. Catching it early before it has spread beyond the prostate makes it makes it highly likely that you will be completely cured with no lasting side effects. The other option, to ignore or procrastinate, can lead to a permanent loss of function and/or a slow miserable death. The poor bastard in the bed next to me at the hospital, had a cancer that had hopelessly spread, he rang for the nurse every 20 minutes all night long to beg for more morphine. That certainly clarified the decision to have taken care of this, sooner rather than later. If you enjoy life there is only one rational choice. read more

Dr.Johnston is one of the best doctors we ever had. My dad is a patient of him and he was practicing medicine overseas himself so you can imagine how picky he could be when it comes to choose a doctor but he likes Dr.Johnston a lot , he always says "Dr.Johnston makes me feel good." He also bent backward when it came to a specific medication that my dad needed and it was way more expensive than our budget. The office kept trying till the insurance accept to pay a large portion of the bill.He is very knowledgeable.He pays attention to the patient,he cares for the patient and he spend enough time with the patient to solve him/her problem.last but not least he is funny and you'll enjoy talking to him.I suggest him %100.Also their office is very clean. The bathrooms are always very clean and smells very good and the staff are nice and caring. read more

Great bedside manner; treats you like family. Takes time to address your concerns and looks for the best solution. The office is run very efficiently; no wait before office visit. I was referred to this office as a second opinion and I am very glad I came here. Because I had a mass on my kidney and the first doctor said before testing it you have cancer and we will need to take out your kidney. Keeping in mind at the time I was in my early 30's. Doctor Johnston said oh no your too young to take out your whole kidney and thank goodness because the mass was not cancer. I was sent to Dr. Johnston to remove a tumor from my kidney. He did using a robot. I was not sure of what I was going to go through. This is a hard time for family and friends and he made me feel relaxed. He was confident, kind, knowledgeable and answered all my questions. Everything went well, I could not of felt more comfortable and glad he was my doctor. So glad God brought him to me. I would totally with confidence recommend such a special doctor to anyone reading this. I would drive wherever he is for check ups and if I was to need any further treatments. My husband and I had a great experience with Dr. Johnston and his staff. After receiving a diagnosis that no one wants to ever hear, kidney cancer, Dr. Johnston explained my surgery and recovery time clearly and precisely. All our questions were answered with patience and terms easily understood. We found Dr. Johnston to be very personable, respectful, thorough and professional. After our meeting with Dr. Johnston, we felt comfortable having him as my surgeon. My surgery went well, my recovery was without complications. Went in to ER the night before my sons wedding for kidneystones and found out I had a large stone that was infected and would not be able to pass it on my own . if it was not for Dr Johnston coming in the middle of the night I would not have been able to see my son get married .When the hospital called him he was off duty and agreed to come in right away and do an emergency procedure so I could be home in time to make it to the wedding .Its nice to know there are still caring people out there.I made it to the wedding on time and I felt great ! What can say? Dr. Johnston is fantastic. He did my prostate surgery and I went to him for a second opinion when I didn't feel comfortable with my first referral. It was my first surgery in my life and I'm Canadian now living in the US. He prepared me extremely well, very quickly/efficiently and his bedside manner through the whole surgery was impeccable. I experienced rising PSA levels over the past year. As time went on Dr. Johnston recommended an MRI, then a biopsy, and later as tests showed prostate cancer, he explained my options. I decided to have my prostate removed. He explained what to expect after surgery and things have gone pretty much as he described. I would advise patients to research your particular issue, and ask him any questions you have. He's more than willing to take the time and explain. Dr. Johnston was the surgeon who performed my radical prostatectomy (robotic laparoscopic). During my pre-surgery office visit, he was very friendly and comforting, and patiently explained everything to me. He performed the surgery masterfully, sparing my nerves (my cancer hadn't spread beyond my prostate) and reconnecting my urethra to my bladder in such a clean way that I've had neither urinary nor erectile issues. Dr. Johnston III provided an understanding of treatment options that included advantages and disadvantages. He responded timely to questions and supported a strong physician-patient partnership creating a customized treatment. He checked on me after hospital discharge and maintained subsequent care. Dr Johnston recently performed my prostate surgery. He did an excellent job with no complications. I've had nine previous surgeries including 3 abdominal and this was the least painful and easiest recovery. Avoid this urologist. Terrible bedside manner. A real jerk. Certainly not someone with whom you would want to discuss sensitive urological concerns. Stay away from this one. There are too many quality, respected urologists for anyone to have to put up with an a**hole like this. A real charmer! Better bet is to use a quality place like U-M Health System to find your urologist. read more

I was referred to Dr. Johnston by my primary doctor after my annual Check up. He confirmed my nightmare after a few tests, 52 years old and I have Prostate cancer. He did a great job in removing it and I am now recovering slowly. I would recommend him to anyone in that finds himself in this position.
