Cucumber. That vegetable has had huge impact on my alcohol choices in the past 5 or so years.
Hendrick's Gin
Its really all a bartenders fault. He worked at what was then Fiamma in Buffalo NY. I went in to pick up a takeout order. There was a wait, which was expected actually. I was early. The bartender offered me a drink while I waited. I said simply "make me something you think I should try, if only one time in my life". He did. He made me a Hendrick's Cucumber Gin and soda. Loved the cucumber flavor. Loved the drink actually. But could not remember what the gin was. For a long time. Asked a few people along the way, but this was not a focused search for at least another 2 years.
Then I was at a very upscale bar in Delhi waiting for my hard drinking boss, and knew I could not simply have a V&T, he just would not be happy with that choice.
So I once again asked a bartender - What do you think I should have on this hot Indian night waiting for my hard drinking and pretentious boss? He pointed to all sorts of colored spirits, all very good I'm sure, but I'm really more of a clear spirits drinker. Then he said "Cucumber" I did not hear what came next. I said, that's it. Make me something with that. I had it then over ice.
Even after that I could not remember the brand name. Recently it came up with a vodka drinker, who immediately knew the gin band I was thinking of. I went a bought a bottle tout de suite. Drinking some as I write this.
Anyway, this product is made by William Grant & Sons of Scotland. I am forever grateful. Most gin is juniper based. This is too. But its got rose and cucumber infusions as well. Just a little something different. If you mix it, the garnish is often cucumber instead of lemon or lime. Try it, you'll be happy.
I don't drink much gin at all, but love this brand when I do. And Ill take it over ice, thank you.
