It is now a lot more modest with the space being split between a small off licence and a large alcohol cash and carry. While this means things are a little bit easier to find, the choice of booze etc is not what it once was and the prices are actually a little big higher than the other off licences in Bangor. If it wasn't for the staff, who are always friendly and helpful this place would probably get two stars, but the effort they always put in makes this a pretty solid 3-star off licence. You will get what you pay for but you may have to pay a little bit more than you would normally.

And considering myself quite cultured among my Buckfast-swilling friends too. As such, the Vineyard isn't an offy I go out of my way to, specialising in proper wines and drinks for those who drink for taste and actually keep the cork of a bottle of wine to put it in the bottle and keep it for later. I do call in fairly often as it's on my way home, and no doubt embarrass myself terribly by going for the £5.99 or £4.99 rose, but I care not. The Vineyard is about the best place on the Ormeau Road to go if you want to buy someone a nice bottle of wine as a pressie, or to bring to someone's house if they're making you dinner. But I call in mainly for convenience rather than choice, although clearly that's my fault for being such a pleb.

The stock is pretty good with plenty of good red wine if that is what tickles your fancy. The staff are friendly and helpful and you can usually get what you want. If you can't they should be able to get it in from one of the other Winemarks in town. There is good parking nearby and an ATM, but if you pay on your card you can get cashback, which is really handy.

You know what you're getting with Winemark, a decent selection of your main beers, ciders and stouts, wines and spirits with good offers from time to time. The guys in Ballyholme Winemark know a decent bit about wine too if you're stuck and their staff have always been friendly over the 15 years I've been going here. I think it's the banter of the staff and sometimes other customers I go back for. They don't offer a breathtaking variety of spirits but I suppose they know their target customers well enough by now. Recently due to the boom of craft beers they've started stocking some terrific ones from the Hilden brewery which I have been sampling keenly recently as I'm slowly moving away from wild nights drinking Buckfast (which they sell by the barrel load). They also usually have free samples of wine or spirits on a Friday and Saturday which I think a lot of customers enjoy. There's parking right outside too and in the adjoining streets, a bank machine a few metres away and a Chinese takeaway and a supermarket right across the road for provisions for the evening and to line your stomach...!

It's not easy to find good wine in here, it's either cheap plonk or more expensive stuff you wouldn't recognise unless you have a enclyopaedic knowledge of wine. Still I'm keen to get every ounce out of my local off licence so I resolved to find something especially with the road was smoothed by a shot of promotional peach shnapps they'd given me. When in doubt about wine to choose I look for prizewinning labels. The only one I found in here was a bottle of Castillo de Molina Sauvigon Blanc, 2009 from the Elqui Valley in Chile, which was a success. It's far easier to get beer, cider and spirits in here though. The staff are nice too, and keen to advise on the spirit line especially so when my household needed a bottle of rum or whiskey I came here and went home happily supplied.

I can honestly say I didn't have any great expectations of this Ballyclare off license. It doesn't…read morelook like much from the outside, but as always, appearances can be deceiving. As you walk in, the shop looks so much bigger than what you would ever have imagined, its brilliantly laid out, all the drinks are set out in their different sections; red/white wine/beer/liqueur/spirits/Alcopops etc. The deals of the week on offer are clearly marked with a sample of each beside the label, the beer is stocked at the back and is all kept cool (Yay!) the prices weren't great I must say, for some reason I expected them to be cheaper, but as all we were looking was some chilled wine to enjoy when we got home it wasn't really a problem. We decided to take advantage of the special offer on white wine (£4 off a particularly nice looking wine, memory escapes me as to the name but it wasn't that great in the end ...boo!) but I was pleased with the experience of calling in here. They sold some very lovely looking wine (I nearly fainted when I saw the price, but that's vintage for you!) I wouldn't be calling in here every weekend for my wine but as is often the case the local Asda or Tesco probably do much better deals. The service was very pleasant though, the lady pointed us to our next stop which was down some strange side alley so brownie points for the helpfulness of staff and presentation of the shop. I also learnt that Grape Expectations stock over 760 wines, and they have one of the largest walk in coolers in Northern Ireland! There you go now, the things you learn ey!
