My child has attended 3 Montessori Schools in 2 different states. This was by far the least…read morehospitable and supportive environment of any school she has attended (Upper Elementary). A couple of things that I would call out. 1. The school itself is very cliquish and allows a "Mean Girls" environment to exist. This is very different than the kind and welcoming cultures we have experienced at other Montessori Schools. 2. Specialization between students is treated as a nuisance by the teachers. On multiple occasions we asked for our child to be challenged more academically after coming home every day in tears about being bored. In each instance the teachers made commitments but then failed to follow through. 3. For the last 4 weeks of Spanish class the teacher had them re watch the same Cinco De Mayo celebration again and again. 4. They used our emergency contact information to solicit money from friends and family. 5. Despite the items above and based in large part on assurances from teachers, we committed to another year at the school to avoid another transition for our child. Once we were locked into the pricey financial investment for the following year, the assurances fell through and the school refused to let use out of our contract despite a questionable ability to meet our child's needs. My advice to those who consider MSD would be to not let the tour fool you. If you are looking for education tailored to your child's needs in a warm environment, this is not the school for you. We are currently paying MSD tuition while sending our daughter to a public school. We get a specialized and tailored learning plan, a teacher that follows through on commitments and and a Spanish class that teaches Spanish. It is worth every penny.

Another update is they really need to refresh the counseling dept. I've never been ignored so much in my life as I have been by these counselors. I've also heard my kids and their friends say the same kinds of things. They are just not good. If your kid is a go getter, they will do well at East. But I think all types of kids need attention and help too, and the quiet ones fall through the cracks here. Again, something I've dealt with in our family as well as hearing it from other families.

As any parent with multiple kids may share, children have individual needs, and what was best for our daughter - smaller class sizes, more individual attention, consistent and warm encouragement within a structured academic environment - meant that we felt she needed a different option than her older siblings. We could not be more pleased. What do we love most about SMA? Most importantly, as much as middle school is never going to be the highlight chapter of any child's autobiography, our daughter genuinely enjoys going to school, no matter how reluctant she appears. The teaching at SMA has been terrific. The smaller class sizes allow her teachers to really get to know and spend time with her - and they understand when to nod empathetically and provide a little leeway, and when to gently hold the line and ask for more responsibility and commitment. There is a structure and rigor to classrooms at SMA that is couched in a warm and bright environment where learning and achievement are valued. The fit at a school stretches far beyond academics, and the culture at SMA has been outstanding. Our daughter was welcomed into a brand new social environment by her peers -- often girls who had been at SMA for several years, but who still embraced new students. She has been encouraged to join teams and activities in which she had no experience, and these have been some of the highlights of her year. Lastly the communication from SMA's administration has been excellent. Even on difficult topics, they are clear on what they believe and why they choose a specific course of action, and they have always acted fully aligned with the interests of their families, The values of SMA are not used to constrain and limit behavior, but instead are a structure on which the school slowly builds, piece by piece, students with exemplary habits and character. We hope to be part of the SMA community for years to come.

Denver Academy is not the solution you are looking for…read more There were many situations that happened at my expense including a teacher announcing in front of the whole class that I had to be in therapy, in order to embarrass me. Another time my parents tried to write an email to the school about how it was hard for me to do a "working lunch" (where you sit in the classroom instead of going outside to complete work) because of issues with eating in the past. They completely disregarded my parents' worries until they escalated it to the principal who finally and indignantly accepted that I could sit in another room to do my work. At that point I hadn't been able to eat lunch at school for around a month. At one point during the year I finally felt comfortable eating in class and the teacher made a comment along the lines of "well looks like your parents were just being dramatic because now you can eat just fine, huh?" The same teacher later allegedly "mistook" my name in an email for someone else, (whose name sounds nor looks like mine in any way so he took me out of class during my final exam, yelled at me in his office until I was crying, threatened to expel me and told me I couldn't get into any college if I had that on my record. When my parents emailed him about it, he completely denied it and lied about it. This was what ultimately led me to have to leave the school halfway through the year and now I am completing the rest of my sophomore year online in a different program. This school takes advantage of desperate parents who want what is best for their child who has most likely been struggling in school. Their signature quote "We teach students the way they learn best" should be changed to "We teach students the way that is easiest for us". Where parents and kids think they have finally found a safe space for their kid to grow and thrive it is actually the opposite. The sheer amount of bullying from teachers and students alike that I witnessed at my time there is more than any public school I have ever been to in my life. Please do not send your child here.

I volunteer at Wyatt once a week, as part of the Reading Partners program. Every Wednesday our…read moregroup of adult volunteers spends about 40-45 minutes with a group of six graders, reading books and spending time together. The school is a beautiful building! Very tall ceilings, well maintained. The main thoroughfare is pretty impressive as you walk into the space. When there's kids walking around in between classes, the echo is impressive. Since I'm only there for a volunteer program, I can't speak to the teachers or the classes. However, my student that I read with is extremely bright and her teacher encourage her to reach as much as possible, for school and for fun. Really cool building and really cool kids.

When we out our name down they said about a year. When we called for an update 6 months later they said we were still a year away. Then we called again in February and we were told that we would be first in line this spring most likely, but if not, definitely this summer. We just called again and it turns out that they're booked up until 2020! This is no way to communicate with prospective students. This is disrespectful and extremely disconcerting, as now we find ourselves again left out to dry with no explanation given.

By then, most high-risk folks will have been vaccinated. But, CA continues to put the needs of others over the social and emotional wellbeing of their students. There's talk that the kids will be able to "vaccinate their way out of wearing masks and social distancing in the fall." Some parents are not interested in this possibility until more information about vaccinating younger people becomes known. If you don't want to vaccinate your younger students, I'd look into another school.

The Colorado Academy community has helped raise our three boys. At CA, they have been able to take…read moreacademic risks, try out new athletic options, and dive deep into music, theater, photography and choir. They have grown up as responsible citizens who are open to civil discourse and new ideas. Due to the phenomenal outdoor offerings, they have also learned how to fly fish, mountain bike and camp.
