Amy Willetts and the other women (midwives and nurses) in her practice are phenomenal. Even if you are planning on getting an epidural during childbirth this group is a great option for you. I originally started seeing Amy for my annual check-ups a few years before we decided to have children. I have now seen her for nearly a decade. She has a very calm disposition which always put me at ease as I used to be rather tense about annual exams.
Initially, the check-ups early in the pregnancy are solely with Amy. This allows plenty of time to get to know her and her office nurse, Demi. Each truly takes the time to listen, not only about your pregnancy, but about the rest of your life. I truly felt like they knew me and knew me well. Amy was a wealth of information for a nervous first time mom. She also provided me with referrals for pregnancy classes, nursing classes, and other specialties. Some appointments were quick if I didn't have any questions, but some were rather lengthy because I had concerns or my husband had questions. We never felt rushed and she was always sympathetic and helpful.
Near the end of the pregnancy I rotated between the other midwives in case one of them was on call when I went into delivery (like with most OB/GYN practices). Each of the women had their own personalities and unique bedside manner. I enjoyed seeing each of them and was not at all nervous about who would attend my delivery. Amy Willetts, Carol Hirshfield, and Julie Omar were the three midwives who delivered each of my three children.
My 3 pregnancies were low risk, but not without some complications during labor. Although I had preferred to have no interventions, it did become necessary during my first pregnancy to administer pitocin to start contractions after my water broke. Amy has forever won my husband's favor since she talked him through a particularly emotional moment at the end of a grueling labor.
During the delivery of my 2nd child, Carol was an incredible advocate for me when an anesthesiologist, with very poor timing, was insisting on interrupting me during a contraction. Her fierce protection of my wishes kept me comfortable and allowed me to have the birth I desired.
My third child was in distress during the final stages of labor. Julie promptly called for reinforcements. Within moments the room was filled with every imaginable emergency personnel for me and for the baby. Although it became necessary to slightly divert from my original birth plan, I did deliver a perfectly healthy baby thanks to her interventions.
This group is VERY GOOD at sticking to your birth plan and explaining every step of the labor to you (unless medical intervention is necessary...and that's exactly what you would want from them). Definitely write one. Every individual who came into the room read mine. The birth plan assisted in communication of my wishes at a time when I was not able to communicate it clearly.
My experiences with this group left me feeling empowered and proud of my body. read more
