GBC is an amazing option for those interested in experiencing birth the way nature intended. The midwives and assistants are absolutely incredible, both professionally and on a more personal level. When being cared for by GBC, you don't feel stressed or pressured over anything related to pregnancy and birth. They are totally on your team, and genuinely want you to have a truly special experience. I transferred to GBC from my obstetrician late in my pregnancy. I was 34 weeks when I transferred. Up until that point, I was planning an unmedicated birth in the hospital. Unfortunately, I decided to wait until 32 weeks to discuss my plans of going unmedicated with my OB. In discussing this with him, I realized I felt completely unsupported by him, and knew that I would have to fight for the birth I wanted. No thank you. I decided to check out GBC and so glad I did. I immediately felt heard and supported...and knew this was the right path for me. Hillary was great at explaining everything regarding home birth to me and answered all questions honestly. Great vibes from the beginning. I gave birth at 40+1 at home with my husband, son and sister present. Katie, Hannah and Janina were the midwives who attended my birth, and they did such a wonderful job. They allowed me to labor the way I wanted...and birth the way that was most comfortable to me. They let me do my thing and just supported me like crazy throughout. Despite the intensity of my contractions, I felt calm and safe knowing I had nothing but support around me. What an amazing team! My husband and I agree...if we have another baby, we're going with GBC again. My birth experience was absolutely incredible...I can talk about it all day! So so so so very grateful. I had an amazing experience with Hillary's team at GBC. I was a transfer at close to 30 weeks as I had decided to do a home birth instead of a birth center and I am so glad I made that choice. Even though this was my first baby and I had no idea what to expect, their professional yet lighthearted attitude helped me feel calm and confident that everything was going to go well. My baby boy was delivered with the help of midwife Hannah and assistant Tynece. GBC is the greatest team of midwives. As a fist time mom, a home birth was what I had always wanted, but didnt really know what I was getting into. Throughout my pregnancy, with each visit meeting the midwive and midwives assistants I became more and more comfortable. My labor was out of the ordinary as my water broke and contractions didn't start. My midwife team was with me everyday, coming up with ways to get my labor started, as I was staring down a hospital induction. Everyone was truly rooting for me and wanted to see me have the homebirth I had always planned. Contractions finally started and I gave birth at home, surrounded by a team of magnificent women. Thanks to Hillary, Tera, and Rachel, I had the home birth I always wanted a couple of weeks ago. My baby and I are both happy and healthy, my husband got to be involved in the entire birth, and the cleanup was so good, you can't even tell that my living room looked like something Dexter Morgan would reconstruct by the time this baby arrived. Plus, my doula said she loved working with Tera. As I said in a previous review, I was happy with the prenatal care I received here. I went to 41 weeks with this baby and was never, ever pressured to induce since all the tests said she was healthy. I don't know many women who can say that. At the same time, I felt safe in the knowledge that if there were any problems, I would be directed to the hospital right away, because my safety and the safety of my child were important to my midwife. I have also been more than satisfied with the post-partum care from Gentle Birth, not only with follow-up visits but phone support, too. I had planned to return to my old OB/GYN after having my baby, since I was happy with him before and he did a great job. Now I think I will stick with GBC for my gynecological needs, even though they are farther away and have less availability. I have been so pleased with every aspect of the experience of my birth and my interactions with the staff here since then, and I can't wait to be pleasantly surprised by more differences between their model of care and the standard model of care. As a first-time mother, I was hesitant to have my baby at home. What if something went wrong? However, when I found out the hospital where the midwives I first chose to birth with did not allow acupuncture in the hospital, my mind started to change. Acupuncture is what helped me to conceive my baby, and I wanted the option of having it to help my baby come into the world. After interviewing Hillary and a home birth midwife with another group, I found I clicked Hillary more. I also felt more comfortable with her years of experience. She answered all my questions and allayed all my fears about home birth enough that I was very comfortable and confident to go with Gentle Birth Care for the rest of my prenatal care and birth. I am happy I did because had I chosen to go with hospital midwives, I would definitely have had a c-section. I was impressed that they did all of the necessary tests and monitoring before and during birth to ensure that my baby and I were fine, while allowing natural gestation and birth to take its course. After passing 2 non-stress tests and having an ultrasound that showed my amniotic fluid level was not dangerously low, I was allowed to go to 41 1/2 weeks--when my labor started naturally. Unlike what is often seen in hospital births, the midwives believe each pregnancy and birth is different, and a gestation up to 42 weeks may be perfectly normal as long as close monitoring reveals mother and baby are fine. Unfortunately, my labor was a long process, starting and stopping over a period of 72 hours, with about 35 hours of active labor. Through it all, the nurse-midwives (Amy and Hillary) and professional midwife (Rachel) gave me ideas to help kick start my labor, such as drinking castor oil (not fun but preferable to the painful contractions brought on by pitocin) and walking or sitting on a birthing ball--all the while closely monitoring my baby and me. After breaking my water, Hillary did not see meaningful progress and said I should prepare to go the hospital if things didn't start happening in the next hour. I didn't argue. I trusted her knowledge and expertise, but I did want to try that one more hour. After one more acupuncture treatment, things started moving. I was able to give birth (safely and naturally the way I had hoped) at home in the birthing pool to a healthy, alert baby boy born at exactly 42 weeks. I received 2 home follow-up visits where I received some great tips on breastfeeding from Rachel. The best thing about my home birth experience is that my baby and I did not have to step foot out into the Polar Vortex of January 2014. read more

How many people do you know who can honestly say the day they gave birth was the best day of their lives? After giving birth to my first, I never thought I would be able to say that myself. The birth was traumatic from start to finish. I was ordered around by hospital staff, not allowed to labor in the positions I needed, and given medication without my knowledge--let alone my consent. I didn't know it could be different. But then I found Gentle Birth Care. During my prenatal appointments I was treated with the utmost respect. Corinne obtained consent before every exam and took her time to answer my questions and get to know me as a person rather than just a customer. When baby day came, Corinne, Becky, and Tesha were just as excited as I was! They gave me tips to manage the pain and get the most out of every contraction. I got in the pool and waited for the contractions to get stronger. They got stronger, but never became unbearable like my first birth. I couldn't believe it when I felt like pushing! I thought I had hours to go! My sweet baby girl came screaming into the world after an hour and a half in the pool. We had babies #2 and #3 with GBC. Hilary attended our first birth with Aimee and Nicole (now moved to Minnesota) and Nicole attended our second. Their births could not have been more peaceful. Our older children got to wake up and meet their siblings in their home after birth which was such a cool experience in itself. I cannot stress how much more individual attention you get with a home birth. My first born I labored in a triage room and saw our midwife once before I told them I needed to push, so my husband and I were basically on our own for most of that birth! With GBC homebirth you have a certified midwife and a midwife in training (many times a nurse) with you exclusively. Their presence was comforting but not all obtrusive. Hillary's decades of experience was so comforting because she was able to tell me what to expect. She respected my wishes of not doing frequent checks and asked if I wanted any stripping to augment labor the one time I was checked. Neither her nor Nicole every told me to push, I was trusted to listen to my body and both babies came out with 3 or less pushes. I know I am very fortunate to have had relativly smooth births, but I also know a big part of that is having the right providers and the right environment. I was too chicken to have my first baby at home and we regret it! (And she gets mad that her sister and brother got to be born at home) One last thing, we switched insurances for our second and had to get an out of network coverage exception, it was a huge pain but Hillary and Carissa really helped with the process. read more

I loved loved loved my experience birthing and prenatal care here. I would for sure, birth with them again, even though my insurance did not cover it (because AETNA sucks) and I paid every cent out of pocket. Appointments were always prompt. Scheduling them was also never an issue. My kids love going to the office- in fact the few times we've been to Pumpkin Moon, which is downstairs from them- they beg to go visit the midwives. "mom! they've got DUPLOS to play with! AND A GODZILLA TOY" I loved birthing at home. I mean in the moment i was yelling craziness about how I thought it was a stupid idea, but my husband said later that every single birth i've screamed something similar that i'll never do it again and that i'm permanently done having babies for good. (There's a quote at the beginning of a call the midwife episode thats goes something like that "She wouldn't kill him. No mother ever did. She would only curse his name, and say there'd never be a next time. And she would mean it. And there always was." ) But let me tell you, there was nothing better than climbing into bed afterwards in my OWN bed, with my OWN pillows with my dog curled up at my feet. We walked in the park near my house to get labor going better, my germs, my house, my own clothes. I didn't have to worry about food i cannot eat being given to me (like what happened both times with my hospital births) as the fridge was stocked with goodies that I loved and could eat already. I seriously am mad though- . Mad that I did not do this for my other children. It was that awesome. They had some awesome herbal remedy that made the umbilical cord dry up fast and heal better. (goldenseal?). The best thing though I didn't appreciate it at the time but looking back.... -was that they highly recommended 2 weeks of PP bed rest. I don't know if its because i had a tear, or if its across the board, but it really really helped me heal and helped my milk supply come in so much that i'm donating milk! We had an amazing experience with this practice! Prenatal care was great; I never felt rushed or pressured, was allowed to make my own decisions to avoid certain procedures and was guided and empowered. I mostly got to see Stephani during my prenatal care. I was secretly hoping she will be on call when it was time and was so happy to hear her voice when the day came. I gave birth to my daughter a couple of days ago at home under the care and guidance of Amy (CNM) and Annie (SNM). GBC made sure I met with all the CNM's and nearly all assistants during my pregnancy even though I only switched to the practice around 26 weeks (a rare vacancy!). I was still scarred from a traumatic 47 hour induction with my first born and a couple of previous failed pregnancies. Everyone at GBC was kind, compassionate, knowledgable and professional. They made me and my family feel safe and respected. My toddler loved visiting the Ravenswood office and 'assisting' the midwives at my prenatal visits. Everyone at GBC treated me as a whole person rather than treating the pregnancy. There was lots of advice on nutrition and natural evidence based therapies to encourage a healthy pregnancy and easier birth. On the day of my labor Amy and Annie felt like friends in my house. They respected my need for space while monitoring me and my baby. I was able stand, rock, walk, shower, eat and drink throughout my labor. After 12 hours I birthed my daughter in my bedroom. Shortly after my husband, daughters and I were cuddled up in bed. I've since had follow up phone calls and visits. Three days later I feel better than I did weeks after my last birth. I'm so glad we educated ourselves and realized a home birth was for us. I can't thank the wonderful women at GBC enough for giving our family the option to truly choose how we give birth. read more

Gentle Birth Care helped me experience how wonderful a pregnancy and delivery can be. I was treated with respect and as a healthy person and not a patient. They were always on time and often even early for my appointments. No hour long waits that I had gotten used to with my previous pregnancies. I would bring my 4-year-old son to most appointments at the Ravenswood location and he loved it too. The actual labor and delivery was amazing. Just to be able to walk, talk, eat, drink and relax at home made me feel like a human being and was such a contrast to my previous two unnecessarily overly medicated hospital births. I truly felt like I could do this and that there was absolutely nothing to worry about. To pass the time, after my water broke, I even baked a birthday cake. Such a wonderful memory! My daughter was born in our home without any interventions or drugs, and I couldn't be happier with the whole experience. A review for a birth or prenatal care is a bizarre concept. The variables, (you as an individual being of considerable significance), make it unpredictable due to these variables involvement. You just can't call it like a coin toss. It's birth, baby! Still, I'm going to have a go at some word-of-mouth praise for the two midwives who joined our family. Two pregnancies with Hillary as my midwife and superb prenatal, labor and post natal care is what I received. Both midwives have the easy going/calm attitude that isn't careless or candied and pairs that with the knowledge and plethora of experience. Giddy-up, I'm in. Office was convenient and wait times were very reasonable if no wait at all. They're on-call for births, that means things come up. They will at any office. Rescheduling was easily done. It obvious they are passionate about what they do. They're getting busier and in more demand. My husband and I highly recommend Gentle Birth Care. We just welcomed our second baby into our family in the comfort and safety of our home 1 week ago (thank you Kelly, Sarah, Amie and Annie)! We could not have done it without the care, love and support we received from these fantastic women. They allowed me to labor my own way and supported me the entire time. We were under the care of the midwives at GBC our entire pregnancy. We mostly saw Kelly at the Wheaton office, which is in a great location right in the heart of town. I highly recommend GBC!!! In 2017, I delivered my first baby at home, in water, with GBC and couldn't have asked for a better birth experience. After such a beautiful birth, I knew that "once you go home birth, you don't go back!" :) And, "there's no place like home birth!" I used an OB/GYN for my first pregnancy and birth, and the care I received from Gentle Birth for my second go-round was such a welcome change. More listening, less pressure, more options, no scare tactics...the list goes on! Hillary and Tera are so good at what they do, and I felt completely at ease during my prenatal and postpartum care. Hillary and Tera are both CNMs (Certified Nurse Midwives), licensed to practice home birth in Illinois. They have a staff of assistants as well, many of whom are CPMs (Certified Professional Midwives). A word to the wise: make sure to call them early in your pregnancy (or even before you conceive!), as they can only take so many families each month. read more

What can I say about Hillary...if you are hoping (I say hope because it doesn't always work out for everyone - we do have hospitals for a reason) for a natural childbirth, then I cannot recommend Hillary enough. She is the reason why I believe I successfully had 3 drug-free births. The first was when she delivered my son at the Alternative Birth Center at West Suburban Hospital back when Hillary was co-owner of West Suburban Midwife Associates (you can see reviews of her still on the WSMA yelp site). She has decades of experience and it is because I fully trusted her that I believe I had the confidence to do this on my own. By my 2nd birth she had left WSMA to do home births (Gentle Birth Care) and as I was hesitant to do this at home she acted as my doula. I still delivered with West Sub Midwives in the ABC room at the hospital. When it came time for my 3rd, a home birth with Hillary was the now obvious choice. Why? I wasn't such a fan of the youth and inexperience of the new West Sub Midwives - this was abundantly clear when I was attended to by Hillary on one side and a WSMA midwife on the other at birth #2. Hillary can encourage you with the right words because she knows them either from her own experience (she has 5 kids) or from decades of assisting births. The other girls were sweet, but with one birth under my belt already, I felt like I knew way more about this than they did - which is probably not true but I certainly felt that way as their words felt either holllow or memorized from a textbook. I'm writing this in 2011 so I'm sure as time passes they will be much improved. Enough about WSMA - Hillary is the best. I can understand the hesitation with a home birth and I still don't think I would have the guts to try it for my first baby. Looking at this from the other side though, it is WAY better being at home than being poked and interrupted in the hospital. I had 2 water births without doctors or medical intervention at West Suburban Hospital and was subject to nurses waking me up to take vitals and it was annoying at best. My hesitation for home birth was it would be messy (it was not) and would be a chore to clean up (Hillary and Tera did it themselves before departing and had our bedroom back to normal in no time at all). Here's my bottom line - I trust Hillary. If she tells me I can do something, I believe her. I know that she would not hesitate to head for the hospital if alarmed. Her vast experience and confidence in me gave me confidence in myself and that is a gift proven three times. I cannot repay her for the blessing she became to our now family of 5. read more

I cannot begin to say how great Gentle Birth Care was for my prenatal care and delivery of my first daughter! I came to GBC a little late (I was almost in my second trimester) because of moving plus not knowing whether I wanted a home birth or hospital birth, and they were kind enough to fit me in to their growing practice. Throughout my prenatal visits, they were very laid back but informative--which I like. I mostly saw Hillary, but Tera also did some checkups, and they are both great midwives! Hillary is a little more laid back I would say (maybe because she's been doing midwifery longer:), but totally knows what she is doing. I felt like at GBC, they gave me options and all the disclosure (for genetic testing, rhogam testing/shots, waterbirth/non-waterbirth, etc.) and gave the decision-making to my husband and I. Since my husband and I had just married, and our baby was not planned, we were on a tight budget. But thanks to Hillary and her team, they were more than happy to assist us in finding the cheapest options as far as lab testing, ultrasounds, and doula (if you so wish). Two weeks before my due date, my baby girl flipped to breach position! I went to my checkup and after confirming my baby was feet down, Hillary told me to go to Whole Foods and buy Pulsatilla (a homeopathic remedy) and to do to spinningbabies.com to look up and do their recommended exercises. Within two days, my baby had turned back to head down! We were so relieved. I was supposed to have Tera deliver my baby, but because of the 24-hour on-call rotation, Rachel ended up delivering my sweet Andrea. As soon as Rachel got to our house, I was already dilated to 10cm (I had been in pre-term labor for almost two days!) and she said it's time to get in the birth pool (a kiddie pool I found off Amazon for $25!) and start pushing! I was so excited to hear that because I was so exhausted from not sleeping for two days. It was about 5:30am when she got there, and I got in the pool at 6am. I began pushing but knew that my water had not broken, so my baby was still in the amniotic sac. She told me to push and see the sac would break. I pushed for 1.5 hours and felt like I was not getting anywhere! I could feel the amniotic sac, but I wasn't getting enough traction to get her out! Then she said if I wanted to break my sac, then I could, and if I wanted her to do it she would. I told her I thought I could do it...and I did by puncturing it with my fingernail (sorry it this is TMI). I FINALLY felt like I was getting somewhere, and at 9:06 am, October 31st, my Andrea was born! Even though I had a looong labor and delivery, it couldn't have gone better. Rachel and her assistant let me "zone out" and focus on pushing. They of course checked the baby's heartbeat every 10 minutes or so, but I didn't feel like they were pressuring me at all. Letting me make the decision to break my water and letting me push at my own pace really empowered me and kept me going! I was so exhausted I was falling asleep between contractions! All in all, everything went really smooth, and my healthy, beautiful baby was born. The post-partum checkups went really well, and I always felt like the midwives (and assistants) were there to look after me. So yeah, I can't recommend them enough if you're planning a home-birth! I will do it again with my next little one! read more

Please please save your dignity and time and don't contact these awful women if you have ever struggled with your weight. We contacted the miserable and rude intake coordinator to ask if they would work with me on a low-stress plan for weighing myself. I have had health care practitioners make comments while I was on a scale in the past and it was awful and humiliating so I don't trust and obviously as a pregnant woman need to make arrangements to prevent stress. So fast forward to my "consultation" 3 weeks later. I sat in a room and politely explained my situation to two cold and judgemental women, which was then met with a face and a tone of voice. Just a humiliating waste of time. Literally, all of this over a bathroom scale?! Not sure why we were told they would be accommodating, then after time from work was wasted they were too disorganized to be respectful. If that is the kind of stress you are interested in while pregnant .... Good luck.... read more

Holly was my midwife at the birth of my daughter. It was LONG. Longer than everyone expected. She hung in there with me and when I had some pretty scary post birth complications she handled it so fiercely. I enjoyed all my prenatal visits and felt comfortable with all of the midwives. It is so nice that they care about you after the birth as well. I saw them not just the standard 6 weeks but a few more times to make sure I was healing and again at 6 months just because! I look forward to the next birth with them! read more

Gentle Birth Care is a phenomenal practice. The care has been superb. All my visits were out of their Ravenswood office and it was very convenient and welcoming. They always ask about my health as a whole, and they were always so excited about my pregnancy! My labor was long enough that it covered a few shifts and I got to experience a few midwives and nurses. They all brought something special to the table. Holly delivered my baby in bed. I owe her so much. She was the right amount of firm and encouraging, and definitely an expert at deliveries. They basically bring a hospital with them, and almost any reason to transfer to a hospital would be known well in advance of going into labor. I felt very safe and cared for through my whole pregnancy. Stephanie was the nurse who helped deliver, and she checked up on me in person once and by phone several times after the delivery. She was always so sweet and supportive. I am so lucky to have been able to have a home birth, and I can't recommend GBC highly enough. read more

Very disappointed in GBC's postpartum care. My daughter gave birth over Thanksgiving weekend with GBC. This was her first baby. She and her boyfriend attended all the required classes, read all the material, and took diligent notes. No one from GBC came during the promised 24/48 hour window after the birth. Nicole, the GBC assistant, called on Monday to say she was unable to make the Monday evening appointment. When my daughter requested to see someone, Nicole reminded her that it was Thanksgiving weekend. No one came or called. My daughter made an appointment with her pediatrician for Tuesday morning, thank goodness, because the baby had dangerously high levels of bilirubin and was immediately admitted to the hospital. So a 3 day old baby had the stress of an emergency room visit, blood work, IV, and photo therapy. As I am writing this, the baby is still hospitalized. When we messaged GBC that we were on our way to the ER, NO ONE even had the curtesy to call. As a new mom, my daughter was in love with the idea of a gentle birth and fully put her trust into GBC. Had someone been out to her home during the contracted 24-48 hours to assist with breastfeeding and postpartum care the severity of this situation could have been avoided. read more

We had a wonderful experience giving birth to our son 2 yrs ago at home with the GBC team!

This has nothing to do with "past experiences," but rather your lack of compassion and, in my opinion, your apparent need to rush along my son's birth to tend to another mother. You telling me you would not penetrate and then proceeding to do so while I said "no" multiple times is inexcusable and i find you trying to blame me being upset over this on "past experiences" to be repulsive. How you nor the assistant that attended the birth can find no fault in that is beyond me. Unfortunately, miscarriage is a common part of the childbearing experience. About 1 in 5 known pregnancies end in miscarriage. When we realized we were losing our baby, the experience could have been terrifying. Luckily, we had GBC as our caregivers and I felt incredibly supported. The on call midwives were immediately available to answer my questions and quell my fears. They were sensitive yet clear and explained everything to me that I needed to know. At the emergency room I felt like the doctors weren't giving me information that I needed and wanted - it made me feel like the victim of a tragedy. Having GBC midwives Nicole and Kelly in my back pocket was empowering and allowed me to feel like I was in control of my experience and that this loss was natural and normal - and that I could handle it. They treat the birth of your child as the hugely important event that it is, and know how crucial your confidence and comfort are to the outcome. The contrast in tone from other medical offices is obvious from the very first consultation. They are also extremely well-run administratively (great communication, easy appt scheduling), which is something I wondered about when looking for a home birth midwife. read more
