This is definitely an older rest stop, but credit to the staff for keeping it tidy. The parking lot was mostly free of trash, garbage cans were empty, and the covered seating areas were clean. There are also drinking fountains available. On the downside, there are no vending machines, and many of the bathroom fixtures--sinks, hand dryers, and toilets--were damaged. A lot of vandalism is present as well, which makes the stop feel rundown despite the efforts to maintain cleanliness.

The signs leading up the rest stop that make you aware of the state prison three miles away are a bit unsettling as they remind you not to pick up hitchhikers. Uhmmm....okay! The rest stop itself is clean and well maintained and we were impressed with the nice tile and immaculate women's room but then the unsettled feeling came back when we went to wash our hands and saw three bullet holes in the mirror. Okay, time to go!

Orange is the New Black... Or is it a clever disguise? "Don't stop to pick up hitchhikers."

So, I'm driving Westbound on the 10 returning to Bakersfield from Phoenix and I see a sign by the side of the freeway that says "State Prison next exit". There is another sign affixed to the same pole just below it that says "do not stop to pick up hitchhikers". As if that was something that I wouldn't have thought of on my own. Gee, there's a state prison here and that nice man in the orange jumpsuit looks to be desperately in need of a ride; I think I'd like to jump in and give him a break... Just a few yards down the road I see another sign announcing a rest stop at the next exit (the same exit for those keeping track). Who is the genius who decided to build a rest area at the same exit as a prison? Now, I just finished a large diet butterscotch root beer and a rest stop is quickly becoming more of need than a want causing me to ponder such oddities. What to do? Well, as long as I don't pick up any hitchhikers (that includes scorpions and tarantulas) I should be okay. I sit for a minute in my still running parked car to check the area thoroughly. This is a typical roadside rest area for this part of California - the terrain consists of copious quantities of sand, gravel, and a few scrubby trees but there are a number of covered areas with clean picnic tables - looking good so far. I'll give you an update when I return from the restrooms - wish me luck! Dun - dun - dun. Cue cheesy mystery music from old b-movie So, that was a lot of excitement over nothing. The restrooms are clean, well stocked with toilet paper, and all the stalls have working doors that latch. There is a nice Korean mother and daughter washing their hands at the sink - neither of them are wearing orange. I start to relax, then I see it. The trash can liner is orange. Aren't they usually black? I hear that Orange is the New Black... Clever disguise? You'll have to be the judge. Not sure if I'm just being paranoid or if I'm not making it out of here alive; somebody call for backup.

    It's a little warm outside

No locks on any of the ladies restroom doors. Pretty dirty . But they did have soap to wash your hands .

There were so many flies but it was semi-clean. Stopped on our way back to AZ. Plenty of parking.

But there is NO dining nearby. this is on a big open area lot. You have to go back one freeway off-ramp for take away. Simple, and you can get fuel if you need it there. I reported the lack of hot water the first morning and was told they would have the maintenance person inspect and diagnose the issue the following day. That evening still no measurable hot water. (Warm at first then cold quickly). I called and complained the second time. I was told that it's a "known" problem and the hotel has a "problem " with sufficient hot water when the hotel is full.??!! The next morning a customer told me he was told the hotel has had this known problem for at least the past 6 weeks. I told the female desk clerk that this was unacceptable and I would be filing a complaint with their Corporate office and she hung up on me. Great customer service. (And we paid the full price for 6 nights). We were forced to take cold showers nearly every day. Frankly I believe they are lying and simply have an inadequate water heating system. They use "boilers" and not on demand heaters. They should use on demand heaters ~ period. They instead chose to save money at their customers expense. I am shocked and appalled at how poorly this hotel is managed and maintained. I will never stay here again nor any Hilton affiliated chain hotel and neither should you.
