Eel nigiri, spider and salmon rolls along
    Ed D.

Came here for late lunch and I just missed their 20% off lunch special since it ends at 2 pm M-F. Nice clean modern decor with Japan decorations. Friendly staff. I needed something quick so I ordered the spider and salmon rolls along with eel nigiri. Everything was good. They included a good portion of seafood so that is good. Prices are ok

Excellent flavored salmon with teriyaki sauce for lunch. Now I am ready to go to the Gibson Garage next door haha!

Walking distance from our downtown hotel. We went early because we had an early concert to go to. The restaurant was empty so we were seated immediately. Our food and drinks came out quickly. We ordered a shumai app and a sweet potato tempura app. Both were tasty. Then for dinner we ordered Salmon sashimi and a No.9 roll and an unagi nigiri. Both of those were also delish. The only thing that we didn't like too much was the green mussel appetizer. It was a little fishy tasting, not how I have ever had a green mussel app. Everything else was tasty and our server was quick to bring out food and drinks.

The sushi was decent but didn't taste super fresh. I'd recommend it to anyone looking for an easy dinner who isn't super picky about their fish.

PROS: this place was very nice. Atmosphere was good, clean and spacious, food was good and priced well CONS: the waitress had an attitude like she didn't want to be there OVERALL: I would definitely come back but I would recommend to the ownership to instruct some of your staff just to be a bit friendlier

So this review is for 2 different visits over 2 days, one for dinner and one for lunch. For dinner, I would rate it 4 and for lunch, I would rate it a 3. We stayed at the JWMarriott and wanted to support a small local business. This was about a 5 min walk in a renovated industrial or train depot - a reimagined space in urban center. For dinner, we ordered a rainbow roll and udon. The roll was fresh and done well. The nabeyaki tasted a little bit off, but still yummy. Off in the sense that it wasn't traditional nabeyaki soup... but not bad. Service was attentive and waitress was nice. For lunch the next day... The teriyaki didn't quite hit the mark. It was very saucey and presentation was not what traditional chicken teriyaki looks like. The taste was fine but the chicken was dry. And strangely, they brought out hot water in cold water cups when the evening before, I had tea and hot water in hot water cups. Service was fine otherwise.

While staying at the JW Marriot we walked over to The Gulch area and found this little gem. Seated right away and ordered. Menu straight forward with lots of selections. We went with the sashimi & sushi combo and were not disappointed. Very fresh fish and good sized portions. Wanted to go back on Sunday but they're closed so make a note of that.. this place definitely deserves a 2nd visit

Pretty fuggin good. Really yummy. Clean, good service and food. Our guy was a sweet heart. Thank you!

Just renovated, the whole place got a great face lift. Still fast and great sushi and a couple of other entres to choose from. I like that this place is usually not packed, service is always good and they have a lot of different rolls to choose from. Cute and easy !

While visiting Nashville, we had a taste for something a little different than the southern cuisine we'd had all week, so we found Wild Wasabi and decided to give it a try. We walked in on a Friday evening and were seated right away. We ordered edamame and a few rolls to share and everything came out very fast! The rolls were very generous, and so fresh!! I only wished there were a little more edamame in the bowl, it was quite a small amount vs what I'm used to. We were pleasantly surprised by the quality of the sushi. I am glad we decided to give them a try!

We had to fly but wanted to check out the Gulch on our last day. I had my husband pick out a lunch spot, of course we wanted to try their sushi. This place was really yummy to our surprise it's tucked in the Gulch in downtown Nashville near the art district. It was a quiet Tuesday afternoon, the restaurant is super clean. We got lucky because it started raining soon after we sat down. The server seated us right away, cus again it wasn't very busy and she was very nice and gave us some suggestions. The chef is super creative, maybe because it's a restaurant in the art district, definitely a nice touch on the special rolls. We had Caviar on the top of one of the rolls and another was garnished with strawberries, shredded coconut and kiwis. It was delicious AND 20% off!

Pros: Great downtown location and easy to walk to from most nearby hotels Varied sushi options - so many specialty rolls Large dining area Fast service Cons: Shrimp tempura roll had too much panko so I couldn't taste anything. Had to leave most of the roll uneaten :( Salmon lacked any flavor Surf clam also lacked flavor and wasn't very fresh Pro tip: They did the CA roll and miso soup week. Maybe stick with the cooked rolls. Lots of Japanese beer options too.

We initially arrived at Noko and were graciously guided over to a somewhat hidden, speakeasy-style sliding barn door into the intimate bar at Kase x Noko. The transition alone felt like stepping into another world. Brooke took incredible care of us, helping us explore a few cocktails while we waited for our full group to arrive and truly, every drink was perfect. Standouts included the Princess Ichigo, Naked & Afraid, Komorebi, and a 2 oz pour of Hibiki Harmony Japanese whisky. My friend reserved a private dining experience for 14, and it couldn't have been more perfect with an intimate tabeled bar, two sushi chefs, and a front-row seat to artistry in motion. Course by course, we worked our way through what felt like a perfectly curated journey with each bite more impressive than the last. Fourteen rolls later, I was still in awe. Vinny, our server, brought such a fun energy to the night, he was engaging, attentive, and incredibly knowledgeable. He answered all of our questions with ease and elevated the entire experience. Standouts for me: the salmon caviar, yellowtail, red snapper, fatty tuna belly, and Japanese wagyu, although all were truly melt-in-your-mouth heavenly experiences! And ending with strawberry mochi was the most delicate finish. I also really enjoyed the pickled ginger bites between rolls as a palate cleanser. The aesthetic was stunning: warm, immersive, almost transportive. It felt like we had been carried somewhere far away, where every detail was intentional and every sense was engaged. An unforgettable night. I honestly went in a skeptic and unsure having never eaten raw fish, now I cannot wait to stay up til midnight and try to get a booking again soon!

The main difference I noticed compared to other omakase experiences was the nigiri preparation. The pieces here seemed to be pre-cut, whereas at other places I've usually seen the chef slice and prepare each piece in front of you, which adds more to the experience and presentation of the fish. This omakase also follows more of a set menu format, so it doesn't really change based on seasonality or fish availability. Overall, would recommend in the future if I'm in Nashville again.

When we arrived for our reservation, we were promptly seated at our table. Our quickly waiter came by to grab our drink orders and give us food recommendations. I had the peach soda to drink. it came in its original bottle and they served it with a small cup I thought was super cute. The real highlight of the show though was the food which I shared with my friend so we could try everything. We started with the Onigiri which came with 3 varieties: Yak (grilled rice and roe), snow crab (with avocado and cucumber), and Japanese curry (vegetable). These were so delicious and my favorite was the Yak. The grilled rice gave the onigiri a nice smoky flavor that was warm and very satisfying. Next, we had the Curry Rice which was composed of Japanese curry gravy, chicken katsu, and steamed rice. Of the 3 dishes we had, this was probably my least favorite, but it was still quite good and hearty; I just thought the other dishes were better. My second favorite dish was the Chilled Curry Udon which came with udon, chilled curry sauce, curry crisp, grilled summer squash and rapini. This was super refreshing and exactly what you would want for a hot summer day. The flavors blended so well together and made for a delightful dish. Las, was the Creamy Bacon Udon which was my favorite of the 3. This was made with fresh udon, creamy white miso sauce, bacon, corn, egg, tempura flakes, and nori. It was similar to a carbonara but was even better than what I expected. The dish was creamy and rich with a touch of saltiness from the bacon and a sweetness from the corn. It was a well crafted dish and I'm so glad I got it! Overall, such a great experience here and I cannot wait to come back!

None of us had been to Present Tense before, and we were excited to try it (we picked it because the menu looked great and it was central - we were heading to Green Hills after and my brother in law was heading downtown). Present Tense is a Japanese-izakaya inspired restaurant and natural wine bar. It's tiny, with only 14 chef's counter seats, a few indoor tables, and even fewer outdoor tables. We had a reservation for 5:30pm. We waited a bit to be seated but were soon sat at an indoor table (the outdoors remained busier throughout our dinner). Reservations are recommended. We shared several dishes from their menu: a half dozen Miyagi oysters with yuzu leche de tigre and tarragon oil; yellowtail amberjack sashimi with citrus, orange wine, and olive oil; mushroom rice with an egg yolk and hemp seed furikake; Wagyu flat iron steak with black sesame mole and lime; and blood orange and prickly pear soft serve for dessert. We enjoyed everything, and I think it says a lot that argued about our favorite courses; one of us made an argument for almost every course. In addition to our food, we each had 2 glasses of wine or 2 cocktails (wine for me; cocktails for the boys). The wines are natural and interesting, and the cocktails were creative and delicious. The restaurant is modern and cool, and the ambiance was great. If anything is holding me back from giving Present Tense five stars, it is probably the service. It just wasn't the most welcoming/friendliest spot. And beware - the location is great (surrounded by lots of bars to go to after dinner - if you don't stay at Present Tense to keep drinking their great wine), but parking in Wedgewood-Houston is worse and worse all the time as it keeps expanding and growing. We found street parking a couple of blocks away, but our dinner was on the earlier side. Give yourself some time to find parking if you drive there. Overall, we had a really good time at Present Tense. The food was creative and delicious, and we enjoyed eating it and being surprised by it. And I loved their focus on natural wines. I'd come just to drink great wines and have a small plate or two. Anytime, really. Someone invite me, please.

Once our table was ready, we were seated at the door with a 1/2 table but it worked since it was just three of us. If I returned I'd want to do a full table as it was difficult to cook and talk to each other at a half table. There are tons of raw meat, veggie, seafood, noodles, rice options to grill or add to your hot pot. Along with sushi and desserts. Everything I had was good except the sushi which was bland and tasted like it sat out for hours. I also wish it wasn't buffet style with so many hands touching everything. Plus the plates were stored beneath the food and were hard to reach. I stood most of the time to cook because of the table set up. I'm not sure how others did it but I had to go get clean plates to place my food on after cooking because I refused to put cooked food on a plate with formerly raw meat. There also needs to be clean bowls available for finished hot pot food. I had to use the ramen bowl I had from the conveyor belt. Speaking of the conveyor belt, I'm confused about its point an only one person at our table could reach it. Things were not labeled and the majority were available on the buffet. My niece enjoyed herself so that's what really mattered. However, she's the one that gave it 3 stars so not the best or her favorite but also not bad. I will say (and I never mentioned this to my niece because I didn't want to ruin the evening) that I used the restroom and while washing my hands saw one of the workers use the restroom and never wash her hands!
