Going on a walking tour is a great way to get to know a new city and gain some insider knowledge about the area. Wild Walkers offers daily walking tours of Lisbon to acclimate tourists to the city and provide them with insider knowledge of their surroundings. The tour has no set price; you just pay what you want at the end of the tour.
I took the Wild Walkers' free walking tour on my second day in Lisbon. My tour was led by Nicole, a knowledgeable tour guide with the gift for gab. Nicole led the group on a trek around Lisbon, making frequent stops to point out important landmarks and to provide the group with a history lesson. Nicole was very knowledgeable about Lisbon; however, she often went on ad nauseam about a topic which caused the tour to drag.
Highlights of the tour included visiting a miradouro to enjoy a great view of the city, taking a stroll along the Ribeira das Naus, and learning about the Cais do Sodré area. Nicole offered useful tips on things to do in Lisbon and Sintra and tourist traps to avoid.
The tour lasted three hours (a half hour longer than the normal time) and took us around the Baixa, Chiado, and Bairro Alto neighborhoods. I got a solid introduction to Lisbon and more history than I'll ever remember. read more
