Now I am a big fan of pubs and when at my home in Wales I always go down to the same place which I…read morethink many locals do because once you have been you will want to go again as it is absolutely lovely. If you want the same thing as me which is a great atmosphere and very good food and drink then you cannot do much better than the White Lion if you do find yourself in Mid Wales and here is why. - What is the White Lion? The White Lion is a pub and I actually do think they have guest rooms there as well but I have never had the need to stay over so I am not sure what they are like or what the prices are like. Good food is served and nice drinks and the staff are great. It has a beer garden at the back which is handy when the weather gets better but inside the pub it is very spacious and the even better thing is that it is non smoking in there now which is fantastic. - Where can you find them? Their address is as follows: The White Lion, Penterhyden Street, Machynlleth, Powys, SY20 8DN When you are in Machynlleth which is a little town then you will be able to find them easily as they are right by the clock tower which is Machynlleth's centre. - The Actual Inn: From the outside it just looks like a cosy little pub. The building is white which is what you probably expected and the White Lion is displayed in huge black letters. There are a few tables outside but not many maybe ten people can sit there and then to the left of the inn you will see quite a small alley-way which is where you get to the car park. I know it looks small but we get the Jeep down there so it is ok. The car park is quite big and you can see the beer garden from there which is large with a lot of tables there which is nice when the sun shines. There are two entrances inside. The first is at the back which will take you to the main bar and eating area passed where the pool table is. Then there is the front entrance which takes you directly into the bar. The bar and eating areas are extremely clean and there are tables and chairs everywhere so you can always find somewhere to sit. The bar area is to the left which you can still eat in and the actual restaurant is to the right. You have to order at the bar when you have found a table and you will get a number and the staff will wait on you there. The decorations in the pub are quite neutral and there are many nice scenic paintings on the wall of local areas which can be bought on occasions. - Food and Drink: Drinks are quite standard but they do have a good range. You can obviously buy soft drinks and alcoholic ones and I particularly like their flavoured coffees they do. The food is very nice indeed and I have to say (touch wood) that after eighteen years of going there quite a few times a year we have never had a bad meal. We always feel confident enough to take friends there as the food is that good. The choices are quite good ranging from light meals and sandwiches to main meal such as steak and lasagne. My personal favourite is the chicken curry as you can have rice, chip and naan bread which is amazingly good. The meals are a very good size so you will not be going hungry when you have finished and we do have problems eating it all but we usually stuff ourselves as it all tastes so nice. They do have starters and also desserts but they change quite a bit. When you walk in you can also see a specials board which is always different so you can usually find the more exotic meals there. - Prices: The price of everything is quite standard with main meals being around £5 12 each and desserts being around £4. I can't remember about the starters as I don't often have them as I know how big the main courses are. The drinks are also reasonable at around £2 for a J2o and £3.50 for a glass of wine. - Staff: The staff are wonderful here and the lady that owns the place is always there and quite often sits and has a chat with us about how busy it is and how we are doing. Everybody is friendly and considering they are all rushed off their feet they never fail to smile and always take care with your food and drinks so you are getting a good level of service at all times. - Location: The location of this pub is brilliant as it is right in the centre of the town of Machynlleth so you will always be able to find parking if not at the pub at the large car park in town. Plus because it is in the centre if you go in the day you can always go shopping before or after. Plus it is nice sitting outside as you get the great scenery of all the hills around you. - Other: The pub has a great pool table but only one so it is quite hard to get on there at times. Plus the small pool room has its own little access to the bar so you can still order drinks in there while you are playing. In this room there is also a darts board and you can hire out the darts from the bar to play. - Verdict: This pub is great and I think

I used doggiepubs app to find a decent, dog friendly pub and the Last Inn was top of the list and, in fact, the first place we saw as we arrived. As a great example, for £10 you get a two course Sunday roast which is utterly amazing (and huge!) which consists of Welsh black beef (they offer a veggie option too), colcannon, roast potatoes, stuffing, a selection of vegetables and a delightful little gravy boat all of your own. This filling feast is followed by your choice of hot dessert ranging from rice pudding to apple crumble, chocolate brownie through to jam roly poly and more. The food is traditional, delicious, piping hot and accompanied with friendly service. As well as the Sunday roast, they offer a broad menu, specials board and also have live music and other entertainment on throughout the week. Recently, they've also started serving good quality coffees and specialty teas, which just adds to the experience. As a dog owner, how a 'dog friendly pub' behaves towards my four legged friend also makes a difference. The Last Inn always bring a bowl of water over for Finn, and make a fuss of him, so they get my vote! Last Sunday's visit certainly won't be my last and if you're up that way, it's well worth a look!

Seemed that way to me for the most part. We came here more than once on this trip. It is a pretty interesting thing that they have going on here. Ok, maybe not super interesting, but interesting nonetheless. You can actually drink across the street from the pub. On any given summer night there could be 20-30 people sitting/standing along the fence across the street with plastic cups of beer or whatever. I imagine most of these folks are locals. We hung out out there one night and for the most part they seemed like locals. We were here on a Sunday night as well as a weekday night. Sunday night had live music. The other night had an open mic night. On the Sunday night we ended up eating dinner. We were able to procure a table outside which was quite lovely. I ended up having a nice steak that was cooked medium rare (it was one of the only times on this trip that I was asked how I wanted my meat prepared). It was a nice piece of meat and I would definitely order it again should I ever come back. I know I will be back in Barmouth again. If I had a choice of pubs to frequent in Barmouth, the Last Inn would be that choice.

My parents and I booked a table at the Railway for Sunday lunch - each of us had eaten at the…read moretypically small but cosy pub and were all looking forward to another visit. The Railway Inn is all about traditional, filling grub; the perfect setting for a Sunday lunch in the Welsh countryside. The interior exudes authenticity with its dark pine skirting and floorboards. The Railway is not a place for gourmet eating and lavish surroundings, it is as wholesome as its surroundings from the cask ales served at the bad to the ENORMOUS dog that lays idly by the fire. To the food. As has been expressed the Railway is not a ground-breaking venue of haute cuisine it is a traditional pub for good, wholesome food. I had the pate to start. It was rich, well-textured and altogether moreish and I enjoyed every bit of it; the only trouble was there wasn't enough toast to match the generous dollop of pate provided. My mother had the mushroom bake, my father the pea and ham soup which were equally enjoyed. Next came the main and the Railway lived up to its reputation of excellent portions size as well as its quality. I had the lamb (as always), my father the pork and my mother the beef. The lamb was lusciously succulent, my knife making little work of it which hastened both my appreciation and completion. Beside the lamb came three fist-sized roast potatoes, cooked to perfection leaving the comparatively bland new potatoes in their wake. Some places such as the Trefeddian in Aberdovey only provide a Yorkshire pudding with the beef and you have to go through the undignified rigmarole of specifically requesting one if you choose any other meat to get one. At the Railway they slap one on every plate; crisp, majestic and golden brown I'm very glad they did so. As for vegetables we were given a fair portion of leeks and cauliflower. There's been some talk in the news recently that the humble cauliflower is losing its popularity compared to other vegetables but it's welcome on my plate any day! Dessert. I was well stuffed by the time the dessert board was passed around and was looking for something light. I went with the old, dependable strawberry cheesecake which ended the meal sublimely. I would prefer a few more strawberries and a little less gelatine normally but the pleasingly solid biscuit base and rich, creamy filling overpowered its shortcomings. On another occasion I would probably have gone for the plum pudding that my father chose which was drowned in custard. All in all this is an excellent place for hearty pub-grub and so shall be rated accordingly. As far as the meal is concerned it was superb, just what one needs on a cold, wintry Sunday afternoon in February. The only sore point was the service. I felt a little too rushed and would have preferred to have at least sipped my pint of Madog's bitter before being ushered into the dining room by the all too hasty staff. Speaking of which - my pint was worth an extra star for the pub in itself. This was my first pint of Madog's (http://www.realalepub.co.uk/beers.php?beerId=53). It's not too thick like some bitters and so didn't ruin my appetite. It was full of flavour and I will definitely order it again. Good food, good pint and a good atmosphere. A perfect mid-winter pick you up.

Visited 20th November 2010…read more I visited the Railway inn as part of a group of eight for a birthday party on a Saturday night and was pleasantly surprised. Having eaten in many pubs over the years we have been disappointed with the majority of them serving 'boil in the bag slop' and cooked by 'microwave technicians'. None of that here... The food was all homemade, cooked to perfection and well presented. The meals included: - Lamb Shank The meat just fell away from the bone, 12oz Rib eye Steak Just melted in your mouth, sweat and sour beer battered chicken Battered fresh strips of chicken breast, None of that pieces of frozen ground up chicken bone rubbish served here. The only reason this establishment has lost a few marks is because when the black forest gateaux came it was almost see through. Full marks to the person that cut it, it takes some doing to get it that thin. The rest of the sweats however were all fine. You will need to book here as it is only small but very worth it. Average price Starter £3.50, Main course £9, Sweats £3.75 Rating 8.5 / 10
