This is really the only place that accepts injured birds in the area. Although I don't agree with the ease at which they consider euthanasia, they do more than any of us can and don't require a fee for giving up an animal. They do good work & have a solid structure with physical therapy & rehabilitation, refamiliarization with the outdoors (aviary), and then local release.

Very cool turtle tank

I really love this place .. thanks for taking care of the birds and animals we bring you guys and girls.

Arthur the chicken we rescued on the streets of Harlem
Michael W.

On one of our walks with our rescue pup Cleo, Jennifer and I came across a small chicken with malformed feet from being held in a shoe box cage it's entire life. She must have escaped slaughter or jumped off one of the halal trucks and we found her as she was shivering in a pile of snow, pecking away at road salt obviously starving and afraid. Bending over with a glove (to prevent infection) she allowed me to hold her, pet her and was an incredibly sweet, affectionate and loving creature. It's a shame what humans do to animals in the name of their taste buds. Anyhow, we immediately took her home, fed her oats and water and warmed her up before taking her to the Wild Bird Fund. I had passed by several times, heard multiple accounts from fellow vegans about taking injured pigeons and other birds here for free rehab and placement but had never gone in. When I walked in there was a flurry of movement! Beautiful beings that were once injured or are currently on their way to recovery flocked the floors and flooded staff and visitors with love and entertainment as they waddled around shaking their little booties or brushing up against your legs. The staff was very friendly and you could tell every one of them is there because it is where they want to be and what they want to do. We dropped off the baby chicken, henceforth known as "Arthur" as per Jenn, and made a donation. The staff will provide care and rehab, surgery if needed for her feet, and then place her in a sanctuary. Go vegan; Save the planet; Save lives. ;)

RIP sweet bird

This place unnecessarily euthanizes birds (presuming more so with common birds). I found an injured pigeon with a missing tail and fractured leg. I cared for him for a few days and he was quite energized with a strong appetite but decided to take him to the WBF as I thought he would be miserable living in a box for a month while the tail grows back. Prior to my arrival, WBF encouraged me to bring him in and assured me that they would care for him with such injuries. When I brought him in, a dismissive and rude old blondish woman aggressively took the bag, without a proper discussion or a sign of compassion. I was concerned and suggested that I care of him, but she said they can't return the bird to me once in their possession. Of course, when I followed up several days later, they informed me that the pigeon was euthanized as the fracture was close to the joint and is more difficult to heal (it wasn't even broken!). I then spoke to an independent vet, and they confirmed that this type of fracture would heal successfully with a cast. I rehabilitated several birds and have grown quite attached to this one. Be ware and make an informed decision.

I have made it known to them three different times/ways about my unhappiness with my stay and received no response or correction so reviews are next unfortunately. It is not worth the price I paid at all (over $500 for three nights) We had three lightbulbs out upon arrival and The maintenance man would not go away until I let him in, he stated the hotel said they had to change the lightbulbs then and there and we MUST let him in while we were trying to rest which I found very inappropriate. I also do not understand having a TV and remote in the room but it does not work at all? Why have a non working tv and remote, it might've helped drown out all the noise? Also was told we had wifi in the room but we did not have that either. The night we checked in my daughter wanted a shower but they were both disgusting and dirty and not cleaned. The next day I took a shower and the water smelt like sewage. Sleep is definitely something you will NOT get by staying here between the loudness of outside (the provided earplugs do not work) and the loud kids staying next door getting any rest on this trip was not going to happen at all. I also asked that no one enter my room without us there and everyday the housekeeping entered even though I asked them not too. The only nice thing about staying here was the breakfast for two days, other than that I feel really taken advantage of and can see why you do not have refundable cancellations because everyone would do that. I tried because I had a better deal somewhere else and you said you would not refund so I was just stuck staying here and it was the most unpleasant stay ever. Beware when making a reservation here.

Don't get me wrong, this is important and I don't know what else I would do with my work day if Yelp didn't exist! But next time before you and your buddies decide to go to whatever bar it is you want to get drunk at maybe think about what else you could be doing with that time. NYCares is a non-profit organization that simply put, is a place where people can get together and help out the community. It only takes an hour or 2 of your time for most projects and you have your choice of what you want to do. Personally, I'm not great with kids but I definitely feel sympathetic to those underprivileged so I sign up for projects like the sort and patch where you just iron on little patches onto ripped clothing that they later give to kids from low income families. I like to work with the elderly so I also enjoy going to homes for the aged and hanging out with them. Theres projects where you can get crafty or work in gardens and even go to animal shelters to walk the dogs or clean out cages (I can't do this bc ill want to take all of the animals home with me...eek!) There really is something for everyone. Even if you have kids, theres tons of family friendly projects to participate in. Give it a shot. Not only does volunteering help the community but it also helps you grow as a person. I leave the projects and I feel reborn. Its such a good feeling. I'm sorry if I came off as preachy here. I just feel very strongly about this and I love this city so much and I want to take care of it and as residents I think that if everyone gave just an hour or 2 of their time once a week/month/year this city would be a much better place to live.

Cost: Open Squash tries to make playing squash more affordable by providing a membership-reduction program. The club also has free programs for children from disadvantaged families. If you are interested in playing the sport, Open Squash will make it happen. Open Squash has the best coaches. Here are some of the coaches I have taken lessons from. Peter: Peter is intelligent and kindhearted. I call Peter a "Duracell bunny" because he is always moving - I often see him on a treadmill or yoga mat. The way he himself trains inspires me to think of my physical preparation for games. Peter's teaching is suitable anyone with 2.5 rating or above. Peter is especially good at answering questions. He listens, diagnoses the issues, and explains everything in detail. He also suggests routines or exercises to help you better understand the issues and master the necessary skills to overcome problems. David: David is a very wise man. David often says, "Your swing should be effortless," and he helps you to achieve swings that are indeed effortless. Last year, I had tennis elbow but after David corrected my swing, I could hit more powerfully and play for longer. More importantly, I am injury-free. David has taught me how to move on the court, reduce my steps, and reduce unnecessary turns. David is also very good at answering questions, although he asks many more questions to push you to think for yourself. This is a great learning process, as all the questions help me think about my shots, positions on the court, and strategies. David's lessons are great for anyone who wants to improve their form and care about the fundamentals. Josh: Josh is a very energetic teacher with a big heart. He is good at working with all types but he is especially helpful with children and women. Josh's way of explaining forms is by paying attention to body position. This is great for people who do not have much experience of exercise and know little about how the body functions. Josh is concerned about the community and wants to introduce more people to playing squash. As Josh oversees the junior program, he encourages the mothers of the juniors to play as well and make playing squash a family event. Josh also teaches women-only classes where he creates a comfortable and less intimidating learning environment for women. A great coach for everyone especially pure beginners. Thaisa: Thaisa is our squash and fitness guru. She is a professional squash player and personal trainer and focuses on how to build a body for squash and prevent injuries. Before, I could barely do sit-ups but Thaisa has helped me to become stronger, to the point where I can now finish three sets of 12 sit-ups. Thaisa is known for creating various dynamic squash drills to train the students: Her drills are demanding but one learns so much from them. Even though Thaisa wants us to finish all the drills, she does keep an eye on us. Thaisa cares deeply for her students and is excellent with small children. She wants to build their physical health awareness and knowledge about nutrition. She especially has a great heart for disadvantaged kids: When she has an extra pair of shoes or T-shirts, she gives these to underprivileged kids and inspires them to continue playing squash. Asghar: Asghar is a compassionate and patient coach who is great with anyone. Before I knew him as a coach, Asghar had already coached me: During my first month at the club, Asghar came to me while I was trying to practice. In a caring voice, he told me: "If you can face the side wall when you hit, you will hit much better." Before I could say, "thank you," he had left Now, whenever I see him at the club, he addresses me in the same caring voice: "Keep up the good work." His positive energy makes the club a greater place. In his group lessons, he is good at quickly pointing out something you need to improve. He also creates drills to help students improve their shots and movements. Juan: Juan is a young, upbeat and accommodating coach. Juan first observes his students, understands their level, and then tries to give a lesson that everyone can benefit from. He has combined different coaches' approaches. Juan often plays with us and tells us what we should focus on. Even when we cheer for our classmates when we play against him, Juan is not offended. He often laughs with us and has fun, too. I believe Juan's lessons are for everyone but are especially great for kids. Once when I was early, I saw him teaching a kid. He was very patient and explained everything in detail. I can sense that kids love and respect him and that he cares for his young students. If you are thinking of practicing a sport, squash is a great choice, and Open Squash is the best place to start. If you have already played squash, Open Squash can be your new home.
