I have had mad respect for our armed forces and the people that serve our great nation for a long…read moretime & meeting the People that work at A.S. are deserving of that same respect. All or most are ex-military and are some of the best people I have met. I first heard about AS from some friends that were upset about them purchasing a 4-wheeling park and not allowing it anymore. I really didn't care because I am not into it but either way its a none issue now. After hearing about them I had seen the TV show Stars Earn Stripes with Grady Powell and the Late Chris Kyle and Ultimate survival Alaska with Grady and Jared Ogden. I for sure was amazed at how cool thee guys were and while looking up Info about A.S. I realized that Grady and Jared worked there. (I think Jared has moved on to further his career elsewhere) Needless to say I have been jonesin to take a class for some time. I had found out about an open house they had and went with My wife. It was crazy cool and seeing these guys in action was incredible. I am hearing that there were 600+ people there and this year they expect more than 800. I am so excited to see them succeeding. My wife bought a Groupon deal for a Navy SEAL training experience and I was able to use it this last month. And all I can say it I am not sure what I was expecting. John the main trainer for this 8 hour course was incredible. He made it clear that we were there to learn a skill and he wanted us to be comfortable and able to ask questions and not feel like he was talking down to us in a drill instructor way. The class got rained out twice so I was unable to finish it but I did complete about 6 hours worth of the class. They were quick to give out vouchers to come back and take the class over again or a different same level course. I was kind of shocked. If you want to learn more about Rifles, Pistols, and survival training look into this place as they are very skilled and knowledgeable and I think you will learn some great things. I know I did. From how to draw from a holster and hit my target every time without having all the old hang-ups I used to was incredible and knowing how to defend your home from invasion, it all really got my wheels turning on how to improve my ability to protect my family and stay in the fight. I am not sure of the exact facilities but I know they have multiple short ranges as well as a "Kill house" and a Long 1000 meter range along with other training facilities. They also have discounts for Military and Police so I would for sure take advantage if you are one of the few. Thanks guys.

Without getting into the long spiel, I - a 24 year-old ridiculously urban female - have decided to…read morebegin the journey toward obtaining a concealed carry weapons permit. I have never touched a gun in my life. In fact, up until now, they kind of freaked me out. I just never had that exposure. I knew going from nothing to a certified gun-toter might be a bit of a challenge. Enter St. Louis CCW. I found them online and it didn't take long from navigating the website to realize this would be the perfect place to start. I signed up for an Intro to Handguns class. This business is a husband-and-wife-run operation out of their own home in Prairie, MO. As down-to-earth as a business could possibly get. They have converted their large garage into a classroom, and have a shooting range in their backyard they built themselves. Greg and Leilani Pugh were incredibly friendly. From the moment Leilani offered me a beverage when I arrived to when she offered me one of her chicken salad sandwiches she'd just made before I left, I felt very welcomed. For $50, I received a two-hour semi-private class - one hour of classroom instruction and one hour of range shooting. It was only me and one other guy, so we got very personalized instruction. Greg and Leilani are constantly doing classes, which enables the class sizes to be small, and for them to be flexible with class times, which is a great benefit to the student. Greg started out by asking me where I'm coming from and where I want to go, and I appreciated how he wanted that insight so he can better serve me in the class. Greg was a fantastic teacher. He's personable and entertaining, and clearly knows his stuff - and I know that it's one thing to know what you're talking about, but quite another to be able to convey it to others in a way that they can learn. His classroom instruction, which was a combination of lecture with a Power Point presentation, demonstration, and hands-on dry fire practicing, was engaging and easy to understand. I was then able to shoot some live ammunition out on the range with both a revolver and a semi-automatic (I got through 20 rounds of the revolver and 40 on the semi-automatic). They provided the guns and ammunition. It was great exposure and practice for me. I went from being a little nervous to even touch the damn thing in the beginning, to hitting a bullseye on the target before I left. Success! The Pughs don't list the place's address or phone number on their website - understandably they want to be pretty private because it's their home. When you fill out the form to request a time for your class, Greg sends you back an email pretty promptly, which includes his phone number, and a map to his place. One thing to note - this place is FAR. I did a dumb thing and glanced at the map, said, "Oh, it's right off of 44, that will take me 20, 30 minutes tops." WRONG. I should have appreciated the fact that the map was there to tell me how to get there and was NOT to scale. Duh. This place is about an hour away. So, Stupid Me was late. Luckily they were cool about it, and didn't cut my time short or start without me, which is what I feared. So if you live the in City, expect about an hour commute each way. TL;DR version: Even though this place is a bit of a drive, it's worth every minute and every penny. If you are like me and want a wonderfully thorough, individualized introduction to handguns, look no further. It's not a big fancy range by any means, but it is the perfect environment for learning. They also offer a CCW class that is 8 hours long, and includes lunch. I'm sure he's got a wealth of information to share, and I'm greatly looking forward to it.

The pricing is great ($5 per hour per lane), and in the past I found the staff helpful, though very rule-oriented, which is understandable at a shooting range. Yesterday, however, was a completely different experience. It was my 19 year old daughter's first time shooting a gun, and she was already very anxious. Unfortunately, what should have been a positive introduction turned into a stressful and upsetting experience due entirely to one staff member. When we arrived, we rented two lanes -- one for my daughter and me, and one for my minor son (16) and an adult male friend. Everyone except my daughter had been there before. When we got to the lanes, staff member Bruce began questioning us. I explained that it was my daughter's first time and that she might need some extra help because she was nervous. Instead of being supportive, Bruce immediately became aggressive and started yelling. He then went over to my son's lane and escalated further, getting into my minor son's face. The adult male with us asked him to please back up and be respectful. Bruce responded by getting into the adult's face and yelling even louder. We asked to speak with a supervisor. Bruce followed my friend to the office and continued invading his personal space until the supervisor finally told Bruce to back up. By that point, my friend was understandably upset and chose not to continue shooting. My son shot a few rounds, but the situation had already soured the experience. Thankfully, another staff member later helped my daughter calmly and respectfully, and she was able to learn how to shoot for the first time in a supportive environment. That staff member was professional and deserves recognition. It's extremely unfortunate because prior to this visit I would have given this range five stars and praised the staff. One person completely changed that. For a new shooter -- especially a young, anxious one -- being yelled at and treated aggressively is unacceptable. Be aware of who is working when you visit. Our experience would have been entirely different had we not encountered Bruce.

I brought it back in, and the guy at the counter tested the gun and said I need to be using 147 grain ammo. He said the problem was that I was using 115 and 124 grain ammo before. The first sales person didn't say anything about that, and I actually had purchased a 1000 round case of 115 grain ammo. I think there's something wrong with the gun because I did an Internet search and it said this gun has no problem with 115 grain ammo. I'm pretty sure there is something wrong with the gun and I have to use a hotter ammo to solve the malfunction. The original sales rep said if I have any problem with it just to bring it in and made it sound like they would take care of me. But the second guy who is extremely well spoken had me half convinced I need to use (more expensive) hotter ammo. I'm certain there's something wrong with the gun and now I have to call the manufacturer and deal with them. Update 6/27/25 (two months later): Shortly after my Google review was published, James, one of the managers reaches out to me. He apologizes about the employee that said I needed hotter ammo - he shouldn't have said that. He encourages me to bring the gun in and they take a look at it. Several of them shoot it, it works fine, but it jammed once while I was shooting it with them. They blame it on my grip; my grip is not tight enough so the slide can't operate properly. I'm thinking that can't be right -- I've worked with an instructor, a former professional competition shooter, and he taught me a proper two-handed thumbs-forward grip. I've shot all the major brand handguns, including high-end race guns like Staccatos, and I have never had a problem with jams. I insist my grip, while not pro-grade like these guys, is not the problem. I tell them I want to return the gun. I'm offered a meager trade-in, good for another gun or store credit. I expected they'd stand behind the product, as an authorized reseller for Canik, that they'd take it up with Canik, but they 'stuck to their guns' that the gun was fine, and they could not improve upon their offer. I decline their offer and say I'll send it to Canik. At this point, as if I had some really original idea to do so, THEY offer to send to Canik. Canik, who has a location in the US, still took the better part of two months to send it back to me (it felt like it was being sent off to Europe or something). Canik replaced the slide spring. I get it back, test it, it works fine. But by this time, I've lost my taste for Canik and this whole experience, so I want to trade it in, and get a gun that I've owned before and trust, a Smith & Wesson. I asked my point of contact there, Tyler, what it would cost after the trade-in and adding a red dot. I never did get a reply. I emailed Tyler and James a couple times, called a couple times, can't reach anyone. Ghosted. I feel that the way this should have gone down was that as soon as I had a claim the gun (under warranty), was defective, and if they were not able to fix it, that they should have offered to send it to the factory for repair. Rather than inconvenience and embarrass me, with claims I needed different ammo, or had a bad grip, they should have stood behind what they sold, and offered to get it resolved via the manufacturer. I will probably continue to tell people that The Range West is a top-notch gun range, but I would not recommend purchasing a gun there, as they don't seem to want to stand behind what they sell.

This is a very, very nice scatter gun range - based solely on amenities, it's nicer than all the…read moreranges I've been to in the Chicago area. I've been several times, and this review pretty much holds true for every visit. First off, they have 8 trap/skeet fields. All the fields appear to be usable for both trap and for skeet, although I doubt they have all three required launchers in place at each station at all times. We are always told which are set up for which. All the fields are well maintained, with voice activated throwers. Almost never a broken bird, although the flight trajectory on field 8 is a little flat - I feel like I'm shooting right at the house half the time, which I'm sure is frowned on. It's interesting to note that there is NEVER any kind of wait, and nor is there ever any formal trap. They just tell you to go out on a field and have fun. They track birds thrown with a little electronic counter box, which I've only seen at this location...it seems a bit unreliable, or maybe I'm just dumb. But I think it manages to overcharge me every time. Oh well. I think there are two more 5-stand fields, but I've never seen them in operation. Their clays course is very nice - 12 stations. All have two launchers, so you can choose a (sometimes extraordinarily difficult) true pair or report pair on each station - never just two birds from the same launcher. Difficulty was medium. I recently shot near my personal best, percentage wise, so I'm not going to say it was hard. One highlight is a scaffold shooting platform - it's fun to shoot down on the birds instead of up at them. And there was a single rabbit, for variety, but no mini or midi clays that I saw. The entire course is in the open, kind of brushy fields, some shaded by woods, but no stations under cover of trees. There's a paintball range just behind (up range) of parts of the clays course, and it's hard not feel super awesome when you consider those kids aren't even using live ammo, and they think they're cool. The reason I only have 4 stars marked here is because the staff are kind of jerks. I'm pretty understanding of you being nervous with random people showing up and discharging firearms on your property. But there's no need to be a total jerk to me - if I do something unsafe, then by all means, come down on me and correct the unsafe behavior. But the hostile attitude we always get the moment we walk in the door is a bit uncalled for. Even trying to strike up conversation with the range master got us clipped, smart-alec responses...I guess if he wants people to dislike him, he's getting his wish. I've been several times, and it's always the same. But, if you can ignore the staff (well, not ignore...just don't take them personally, or expect any friendliness) then this is a spectacular range.
