I've followed the Warriors for the last 15 years, through the thick and thin. However, it seems to be very hit and miss entertainment wise.

My friend Ann found that her hair was falling out, which is why everyone now calls her "Wig Ann"…read more This team is named after her. She's still very athletic though, which is why we call her "Wig Ann, Athletic." First-Hand Experience: Wigan is one of my fave underdog teams. I've seen them play once at the DW and twice away from home around the country. They have always represented themselves well. I last saw them in 2011. Now that they have fallen from grace, I wish them a speedy recovery. Their owner's oft-racist and oft-unwise remarks and tirades are the only reason I give them 4 instead of 5. That, and the fact that they can't fill a stadium. This team, I have mixed feelings about. Roberto Martinez and Paul Jewell really put them on the map, two of my favourite managers. But their owner Dave Whelan, famous for making meat pies, is a bit of a racist and nationalist, and gets on my nerves sometimes. I also respect him in other ways though. They were founded in the 1930s so they're a relatively new team. They play in blue and white and are called the Latics. They were in the Prem for ages, until they randomly, crazily won the FA Cup in 2013, and were relegated the same season. That's the only glory the club has ever had, after being the League Cup runner up in 2006. So well done to them for that, what a fairy tale. The stadium is often empty and the owner is questionable, and for that reason I'll give them a 4 instead of 5.

If you really have your heart set on implants, then I recommend Bolton…read more Are Magicians, by definition, Wanderers? First-Hand Experience: Bolton have never been a team I loved, because they're really just a suburban Manchester team and a smaller version of United and City. That all changed for me when they built the Reebok. It really launched them back into their glory years of the old days, and now having Lennon as manager too, they're just such a relevant and vibrant team. I've seen them play in person on many occasions, including an amazing match at the Reebok vs Arsenal. I have to give them a 4 just because they don't always fill the Reebok which for me is very problematic. It should be full and if I lived in Bolton I'd make sure I contributed to the weekly attendance. Prices may be too high? I don't know. Bolton is a really great old classic team. Since they're from a little town just NW of Manchester, they should really be irrelevant, shouldn't they? Any other town-near-a-city team is basically irrelevant. But Bolton never really has been. They've managed to punch above their weight for so long now, and it culminated in the building of what is one of the best stadiums in the UK. Formerly called The Reebok. Every single review here (see below) are for the stadium, not the club, so Yelp really needs to move them to the stadium review page, because they are totally out of place. Anyway. Bolton formed way back in 1874. They play in the second tier. They were one of the 12 clubs that originally founded the league. They currently have perhaps the best manager outside the Prem - Neil Lennon. So next season you can expect them to be promoted to the Prem, not even kidding. Sadly out of 73 seasons in the top division, they have never won it. Hopefully they will get back to it one of these days, the stadium certainly deserves it. They have won the FA Cup 4 times, including 1958. They were League Cup runners up in 95 and 04. Classic team with great support and best of luck to Neil Lennon.

The DW Stadium certainly isn't a bad stadium for a League One side, home to Wigan Athletic FC and…read moreWigan Warriors. It opened in 1999 with a capacity of just over 25,000. DW Sports were a brand owned by former owner Dave Whelan, I like how even though the company is now defunct, they've kept the name of the stadium which honours one of their most successful owners, who has a statue outside the stadium lifting the FA Cup trophy in 2013. I've visited this stadium a couple of times now, having a tour around the stadium, and also visiting for an FA Cup match between Wigan and Manchester City (Don't remind me of a result). The stadium can be easily accessed on foot from the city centre, it is also located right near the Robin Retail Park, where there are multiple shops and places to eat, which is handy in case you get to the ground early or want a quick bite to eat before/after a game. I did find most of the stewards friendly and happy to help, I do think security at the stadium could be better due to the pitch invasion after the game I attended with fans able to throw things at the away supporters, which definitely should have been policed better. I once again have to agree with Fox E, this isn't one of my favourite stadiums but it's great for a team like Wigan, who hopefully will be seeing better days ahead as they should at least be playing at the Championship level. 3* - Decent stadium, not so great atmosphere.

DW stands for Don't Worry (your away team will win), Damn Windy (brr), Desirable Women (north…read morewestern girls usually are), and D*ck Waving (because the men in these parts like to windmill). First-Hand Experience: More info about my personal experience at this stadium - I've been to the DW about 6 times, but only twice to see a game. Once was Rugby (which I hated, and the crowd really loved) and one was Wigan vs Fulham, and the crowd barely showed up (half full maybe). Because they're unable to fill the stadium even when playing top notch opponents, I have to give them a 3. It's a lovely state of the art facility, but it's open in the corners, so it doesn't have the kind of atmosphere it needs. I was most recently here in 2014 after my concert in Bolton and before I played Warrington. I thought it looked in good nick, but still at some point needs to fill in those corners. I've been to most UK & US stadiums, due to lifelong obsessions with travel, sport & especially footy (soccer to Americans). Born & raised in England, I followed Oxford United (hometown team) to stadia all over the country at away games, and later Liverpool (fave team) around. Every stadium review - like all my reviews - are from first-hand personal experience, usually from several visits. In 2011, I was on music tour in the UK, and visited most stadiums for fun in my spare time. As recently as Fall 2014, when I was "stuck" in UK for 3 months, I went to hundreds yet again while travelling. I have pictures of me at most, which I'll post later. Also, when back in UK I'll take more pix, and add more stadia! *** return to regular review *** It's not one of my favourite stadiums even though I've been there many times. It's excellent for a team like Wigan, which can't really be expected to have an amazing ground, but it's got open corners and is almost always empty, so despite its modernness and nice surroundings, it still leaves a lot to be desired. If they can fill in the corners it'll be much better. It used to be the JJB, it holds 25k, it opened in 1999 and cost 30 mil to build. For a town like Wigan to have a stadium like this though, they should be very proud.

But this club is nowhere near the sea, it's more in between hills and valleys, so it's named, obviously, Port Vale. Robbie Williams is a huge fan of this team formed way back in 1876. There are 2 legit league teams in Stoke-On-Trent. The evil Stoke City (grr) and the adorable little cute sexy Port Vale who are too lovable for their own good. First-Hand Experience: Well since Robbie loves them, I had to love them too. Actually, I loved them long before I knew who he was... I'm not sure why. Just an affinity maybe. I think it was their name and the fact that the evil, burly Stoke team were their louder and angrier and bullyish local rivals. Anyway, I've been to their home stadium maybe 10 times? Or more. And I've seen them play live there once. So that's my first hand experience. It was a brilliant experience, and while it's only a 4-star stadium that needs renovation (and that's being generous), the club itself as an entity scores 5. Glorious old team that deserve all the success they get, and I wish them well every time they play. They play in white to 19k people, with a little yellow on their kit. The sad thing is they have never been in the top flight of football, ever, but hopefully that will change one day. He insisted that Port Vale be included on the FIFA 2000 video game and in return gave the game an original song... lol. They've never won anything, but maybe one day that will change.

First-Hand Experience: I've seen Burnley play so many times on TV, but in person, only three times. Once at Old Trafford (United), once at Oxford United (ages ago), and once at Turf Moor. They're a wonderful old club with loud, intense fans and a great tradition. They are a team to be proud of for a little town in the industrial belt of England. This is one of the great old provincial teams of England. Sadly it looks like they are about to exit the Premier League (for the second time) but they've done so well to get there, and their distant history is very impressive. Formed in 1882, they modeled their kits after Aston Villa (ew), not sure why. Their 1914 FA Cup win and their 1961 European Cup Quarter Finals are two of their crowning glories, but their true glories came in the Premier League, which they have won twice, which is amazing for a little team like Burnley. 1921 and 1960 are the years in which Burnley were Champs of England. They play in front of 21k people and have won every division of English football, along with Wolves and Preston, who have done the same.
