The incompetence of Dr. Hjellen was staggering. He couldn't hear me on his telemed as he openly…read moreadmitted, but called in a suicide threat anyway without trying to verify what he thought he heard. Don't trust this glorified chiropractor with your mental health. Even more reprehensible is his efforts to alter his Google reviews by having the negative reviews removed. A dishonest psychiatrist is a dangerous proposition.

There is a bit of a story here, so bear with me…read more.. I first came across one of their providers in a coffee shop in Anchorage. I was with my child who was behaving surprisingly well on that day. One particular adult male was there and what happened next I will never forget. This guy caught my attention when he got up, walked over to another patron, asked for a piece of their paper from their binder, then sat back down with it. I covertly watched him as he started playing with the piece of paper. This whole thing caught the attention of my child too who was watching the guy, but not very covertly. The guy ended up folding it into a paper airplane, then walked over to our table and handed it to my child. He said he was impressed with how well my child was behaving and wanted to give him this paper airplane as a gift before he left. My child talked about this for the next week, took the airplane to school, told his grandparents and his cousin that weekend. Around 2 weeks later I was at the coffee house again (this time by myself) and I saw the guy again. I approached him and thanked him for the gift and let him know how much it affected my son. I asked him what he does for a living. He told me, I asked for a business card, but he said he doesn't tend to carry them. Anyway, I looked him up and it turned out he was Dr. Hjellen - a pediatric and adult psychiatrist. Well, that makes sense, I thought. The story does not end there because my son has ADHD and anxiety. Finding the right treatment has been hard and although he was doing well in the coffee house that day, it is a gamble whether an outing like that will go well or if he will end up having a tantrum and we will have to leave. I called his office and was told that there was a 3-4 month waitlist. I almost turned away, but the interaction in the coffee house had me intrigued enough to add my name to the list. What was initially estimated at 3-4 months turned into 3 weeks as I later got a call from a Jessica at his clinic who told me that a spot had opened and we could come in earlier (she was great by the way, very informative and seemed to go out of her way to make the process easy for us). It was worth the effort. The meeting was like no other I've had with a professional in this field. He was transparent, forthcoming, personable, and put my son at ease right away. He offered us some basic information during the first meeting but didn't offer a diagnosis or treatment plan. I liked that a lot. Too many times we have been rushed through this process. This doctor gave us extra time during the first meeting to make sure we got through all the info needed. As nice as the first meeting was, I was more impressed with the second meeting. He actually asked us what we thought about the diagnosis (both me and my son). He said we were the experts on this child, so we should be a part of the diagnostic process. He explained the diagnosis and said that if it doesn't sound like it is a fitting explanation, then it probably means that something is being missed. THAT BLEW MY MIND! From there he didn't tell us what we were going to do, he asked us what we wanted to do. He walked us through some treatment options and we had a discussion about what we thought would be the best way to prioritize treatment for our son. Coming to the end of this story, the treatment that we ended up going with resulted in around 90% improvement. Our lives are so different now. The tantrums are gone. We are not walking on eggshells around our child and we are not second-guessing whether we can leave the house and do basic life things. Our child is smiling and laughing and happy. Life feels "normal". Like I said, the meeting was like no other I've had with a professional in this field. I would give Jessica, Dr. Hjellen, and this whole clinic 6 stars if I could. I hope anyone who reads this finds what we have at this clinic and with this provider.
