Outside of a few local veggie stands, the only store, It is frequently referred to as Marcy's place after the wonderful woman that kind of hovers over the area. And no, Prudence Island Variety is NOT in Newport. As usual Yelp refuses to accept the address I put in and places the store some place where it isn't. And so it goes. The front door and porch is only a few steps from the ferry and as in the case with most small island general stores, it also serves as the post office, local book exchange, place to post or read local notices, look for lost pets, trade info or just sit around and shoot the crap with people. It's hard to believe but a casino once stood on the spot where the small store is now located. The hurricane of 1938 eliminated the casino as well as most of the other buildings on the island. The store hasn't changed much over the years. The addition of the Del's lemonade machine was the one huge addition. They always have fresh coffee, locally made muffins and pastries, a small case for frozen stuff, lots of junk food, and a sundry collection of mugs, shirts, key chains, pictures and stickers with the Prudence Island logo. At various times pizza, sandwiches, and small hot meals are offered. Everything is pretty much at the whim of Marcy so you never know exactly what they will or won't have at any given time. It's just a small place, sort of messy, dark, unorganized with Marcy scooting back and forth from the post office to the store, lost in her own world. You patiently wait for her because you are definitely on island time once you go through that door. But then that's a big part of the charm and appeal. It's easy to imagine the store looking and operating exactly the same way many, many years ago. If you ever go to the island you will stop at this store. Buy some junky survivors perhaps or some treats to enjoy out on the porch or on the picnic tables over looking the bay. Maybe get sniffed by some of the local dogs, talk and laugh with the very friendly and interesting local people. Perhaps even start to observe Marcy's routine and wonder exactly what in the world she is doing.

With a good sized parking lot, this store is usually an easy in and out. The parking lot itself was recently repaved so the trip is a bit smoother as well! The interior of this location is brightly lit, well-organized, and fully stocked. I have dropped by this location on a whim and on a mission and have always found what I desired. They have a wide variety of products including beverages, canned/boxed food items, candy, paper products, clothing, newspapers, magazines, prepared foods (such as sandwiches from Wright's Chicken) and so much more! Prices are reasonable in my opinion for this type of store. The staff are friendly, quick, and efficient. Long lines dissipate in no time. Best of all for me, I can walk here from home if I am in need of anything. If you are in the area and are looking for an easy place to drop in, this is the convenience store for you. There is another similar store around the corner, but it is located on the main road and has a much smaller parking lot. Take the hassle out of your visit!

The bread is always fresh, and I believe it is local too. It also carries beer and wine. There are two reasons it didn't get five stars, I would like to see more of a selection of chips, and I know this is an impossibility because of space, but the wine selection could be bigger. The staff has always been friendly here, and will help you with anything you need to find. One more thing, your phone may not get any service inside the building, so don't walk in talking on the phone, because your call may get dropped.

Okay ... so I drive by here fairly often and have long wanted to check this place out. With its…read moreeye-catching red, white and green color scheme, it looks somewhat inviting from the outside, especially in this drab, industrial area of the city. Signs advertise hamburgers, fried chicken and French fries. I stopped in around 10 a.m., so the deli / fast food part of the store was closed, but I was at least able to check out the rest of the store. My first impression was that the store did not appear very clean. The small coffee station was rather messy, and the floor and glass could have used a thorough cleaning. They have a basic selection of drinks, snacks and grocery items, although their frozen food section was very sparse. A sign inside advertised a selection of about a half-dozen sandwiches for only $4.95, but I was put off when I saw a full, uncovered trash can next to the deli - who knows how long that trash had been there, since it could not have been full from this morning. So although the sandwich prices looked appealing, the surroundings did not. About the only positives I observed there were good prices on energy drinks such as Kickstart (2 for $3), and hella cheap gas.

This is extremely convenient store and its located in the shopping plaza where Stop and Shop is…read morejust right next door. So along with grocery shopping, its easy to finish the liqour shopping as well. Plus there is plenty of parking available in the shopping centre. Store Employees are very trustworthy, always checks for IDs and making sure they do it all right what they supposed to do. Liqour pricing is also very reasonable and they make sure they dont overcharge for any of the products.
