First let me start with the positives about this shelter…read more... I found the staff to be very welcoming and nice. The dogs were extremely well cared for, despite a very crowded shelter and low budget to work with. The cages are clean and the dogs appeared to be in as good of health as one can expect in a shelter. I found our beautiful gentle dog there and she now has a wonderful home. So, for that, I am extremely grateful. On to the negatives... I was able to walk in fill out one very simple form and pay ONLY $20 to walk out with a dog. Why is this a problem? Well, think about it. Think about all the very bad situations and bad people who could walk in and get a dog for $20. Abusers, dog fighters, lab experiments, etc. The reason that rescues charge fees of over $100 is to make sure that the person wanting to adopt is serious about it and that they have resources enough to care for the dog. I understand that this shelter is overcrowded and new dogs are surrendered everyday. However, I think charging a higher fee for adoption would be much more beneficial to the dogs and help ensure that they are going to homes who really want loving pets. I don't like the idea of a kill shelter, however, when I think of an animal being abused versus euthanized, euthanizing would be the more humane choice. At $20 potential abuse and neglect is too much of a risk. IMO

After years of caring for animals and navigating veterinary care in and around Austin, I had become…read moredeeply discouraged trying to find a clinic that still felt... personal. Not corporate. Not conveyor-belt medicine. Not a place where you feel rushed through one of the most vulnerable moments you can experience with a beloved pet. And then I found Dime Box Animal Clinic and Dr. Darden Hervey. Let me put this into perspective: I live in Far East Austin and gladly make the hour drive without hesitation. Yes. They are that worth it. After what we had been through with Lily--my soul dog, my best friend, my constant companion--I was emotionally exhausted and incredibly cautious about who I trusted next. Her orbital exenteration was not a small procedure, and by the time we arrived at Dime Box, I wasn't just looking for medical skill. I was looking for steadiness. Transparency. Compassion that didn't feel rehearsed. That is exactly what we found. From the moment we walked in, there was a quiet sincerity to the clinic that immediately lowered my shoulders a little. The staff was warm without being performative, attentive without creating chaos, and genuinely kind in a way that cannot be taught in corporate training videos. And Dr. Hervey? Some people are good at veterinary medicine. Some people are gifted at caring for both the animal and the human attached to them. He belongs firmly in that second category. Never once did I feel dismissed, rushed, or spoken over. After Lily's surgery, I had questions--many of them. Every single one was answered with patience and clarity. Not irritation. Not condescension. Not the subtle "we already explained this" tone pet owners unfortunately know all too well. I also want to specifically mention something that deeply stood out to me about Dr. Hervey and the way he practices medicine. He genuinely gives each patient and their family his time and attention. Not rushed, not transactional, not "let's move this along to the next appointment." When we arrived to pick Lily up after her surgery, Dr. Hervey was still speaking with another client. The vet tech came out a couple of times to apologize for the wait and let me know he was still with them. My response was immediate: absolutely no problem whatsoever. Because to me, that spoke volumes. It told me that when it's your turn with Dr. Hervey, you matter. Your questions matter. Your fears matter. Your animal matters. You are not being hurried through so someone can move on to the next dollar. I ended up making the drive home before I had the opportunity to speak with him directly. Not long after arriving home, I received a personal text from Dr. Hervey letting me know he'd heard I had questions and asking how he could help. And he answered every single one of them. That kind of follow-through, compassion, and accessibility is increasingly rare--not just in veterinary medicine, but honestly anywhere. The peace that gave me after Lily's surgery is difficult to properly put into words, but it meant everything to me. He understood that when you love an animal deeply, reassurance matters just as much as the medicine. There is a groundedness to Dr. Hervey that inspires trust. He communicates with calm confidence, explains things thoroughly, and creates the rare feeling that your pet is not simply another appointment slot in the day. And that matters more than I can properly put into words. The drive out to Dime Box feels almost restorative compared to the stress of navigating big-box veterinary systems in the city. It reminds me that there are still places where medicine is practiced with heart, where relationships still matter, and where people genuinely care about the outcomes for both pets and their owners. In a world increasingly dominated by corporate veterinary care, Dime Box Animal Clinic feels like finding something endangered and precious. Competence. Integrity. Humanity. I'm profoundly grateful we found them, and I look forward to trusting them with Lily's care for many years to come.

My 11 year old white poodle mix began to show lots of sudden fatigue, appetite loss, vomiting and diarrhea. I contacted their front desk and was encouraged to bring my dog Oliver in as soon as I could. They immediately took us in and began care for him. After a thorough examination and blood work his levels were not good at all. Dr. Brown immediately reacted and hospitalized Oliver for immediate care and observation. She then educated me on his diagnosis that he was ultimately in diabetic ketoasidosis. She explained with much care, clear and concise words for me to understand. She educated me what happened, that it wasn't my fault and her plan to treat him. She gave me the worst news but I felt so reassured and supported I knew my boy was in good hands. 24 hrs later Oliver is back to his spunky self prancing, eating and being lovable. She sent us home with clear instructions and medication to keep Oliver on the path to recovery. Oliver will be back in 2 weeks for a follow up visit. The cost was surprisingly less than anticipated and I can't thank her and her amazing team enough for all they did. Oliver will be going back to visit her on a regular basis to manage his newly diagnosed diabetes and I am 100% confident Dr. Brown is the best place for any pet needing help. 10/10 can't recommend this place enough. I took my new kitten, Mac to homestead since it was a mile down from my house to make sure my new found buddy was healthy and get him dewormed. I was worried because he was underweight when I got him, but the staff were able to get me in two hours after they opened! The staff were so sweet and welcoming, and answered all questions I had. The wait time was a little long, however it is also an urgent care and with that I understand that emergencies come first, so please don't let that deter you from giving this amazing place a try. The doctor, Dr.Coodrod, was amazing and walked me through the next steps in Mac's life. While we talked, they kept Mac on a heating source as his temp was low when I had come in. Dr.Coonrod went out of his way to show me how to properly stimulate my kitten, and after the appointment they sent me home with two gloves filled with warm water to keep Mac warm during the drive home. A few days after my appointment, the vet office reached out to see how my friend was progressing, which I'm proud to say he is gaining weight at a great rate. The prices were great, the staff amazing, and their bedside manner is top tier. I cannot wait to bring in Mac for his first set of vaccines in a couple weeks, and as long as I live in manor, my animals will go to this hospital. As someone who used to work in vet care, this hospital is amazing and I would recommend anyone in manor get their veterinarian care here.
