    Waterfall

Great park with lovely flowers and forrest. Not too many signs around. My family had a hard time finding the waterfall. I printed off a map from the website that did not help much. The signs were only for the nature center, beer garden, and botanical gardens. But, once we found the waterfall using my gps, it was pretty cool. We saw a few butterflies flying around that was also pretty cool.

Several small waterfalls can be found in the park. Naturally my dog is in the picture because it's a leashed dog friendly park

Big big fan. This park is expansive and well maintained. AND it's near my home! Nestled within is a golf course, archery range, playgrounds and picnic areas. You can also find the Wehr nature center and Boerner Botanical Garden and Ross Lodge. Whitnall extends seamlessly into the Root River Parkway making for several miles of trails and walking paths. There is easy access as well to the Oak Leaf Trail that is a whole different beast to explore. Around the park are several overlook parking areas for scenic views and roads wide enough for street parking. Please be mindful of the signs as some areas are not safe for parking on the side of the road. Leashed dogs are allowed in the park and they should also have an up to date license and rabies tag. Though I have never been stopped to check, I do feel it's safer and common sense to have your dogs protected in case of theft or random wild animal bites(not sure how many rabid chipmunks are out there but still..) I know I clean up after my dog, but it seems that most others do as well which is nice. I've very rarely- in summer months anyway- encountered piles of dog poop on the trails or roadside. Seriously though, no one wants to step in dog poo so keep up the great work people! Wildlife is abundant here so driving slow is a must. It's a great place to get close enough for watching deer graze and there are birds aplenty for all those looking to check off that birding list. Sometimes I see folks lying in the grass below a tree just reading or taking a nap, and that is the true beauty of Whitnall Park. No matter how many people are walking or driving by, it's still quiet enough to feel that you are miles away from the bustle of HWY 100.

This really is a nice park. There is a playground, a botanical garden, a nature center with several hiking trails, a golf course which doubles as a cross country ski area in winter, a grassy hill overlooking a small lake which turns into a sledding hill in winter, an archery range, a lodge that can be rented out by small groups and, I believe, an area for flying radio controlled airplanes. There are also several designated picnic areas and at least one shelter. All manner of wildlife live in this park, from owls and hawks to deer and opossums. Sometimes you can see a Great Blue Heron at one of the ponds. There isn't a pool, but the park abuts the root river parkway where there are two more shelters and the Root River Disc Golf Course. There are also two more playgrounds in the parkway. 53/2014

We went a little off trail and it was muddy so make sure you have the proper shoes.

Beautiful place to do a little outdoor exploring. The waterfall is very close. We went a little off trail and saw some "no trespassing" signs. That part of it was a little muddy which was good for the boys. The trails are marked by color, so easy for one to follow. This was our second time here and still more to see on our next visit!

What a great park and I haven't even seen it all yet! Play frisbee golf here, seriously leave your job, take an hour break and go throw a disc here. One of my favorite courses in Milwaukee and super convenient to my house. One of those holes is in a tree, like literally IN A TREE. ;) Also there are a lot of deer who just like to chill here no big deal.

Amazing garden to visit. Boerner Botanical is well worth the time and money if you like natural landscapes and flowers. The park itself is large too. There is an 18 hole golf course which is maintained nicely by the county. Very affordable if you have a local card as a resident. There are many hiking paths and ponds to walk around as well.

Uhm who doesn't love Whitnall Park? It is one of the biggest and most beautiful parks in our area! There are so many trails to walk on! There is a golf course, waterfall, Mountain Bike single track trail, botanical garden, disc golf, archery range and more! Today we went for a hike with our puppy and he loved it! Still needs some more training but it was fun! In the summer they always have a Sprecher Beer Garden and pig roasts on Sundays. You really have to come visit this park to truly enjoy it! Take my word for it it's awesome!

    Wild flowers!

Loved walking through it and stumbling upon a legit waterfall! Prairie land, wild flowers, multiple walking trails, ponds, and not crowded -perfect recipe for a meditative hike! I did not see many trash cans but I was informed that is intentional to keep critters away and provide a more natural environment. It was nice to see people respecting the park and picking up after themselves! Beautiful park, one of my newest faves!

So many hidden gems within the park! Awesome place to hike!

People of all ages were walking the grounds, taking photos, enjoying picnic lunches, etc. and it was lovely to see the park in full bloom. I hadn't been in several years. Then I came back in the fall to see China Lights. It did not disappoint - we thoroughly enjoyed it. Plus they made China Lights almost entirely wheelchair accessible, which helped someone in my group. China Lights is a unique imagery experience, I'm not sure what else is quite like it. Plus there was a brief acrobatics show which was also fun to see. I haven't been in winter, so I can't speak to what it looks like in winter (but this is WI - so I'm not sure what you can really expect to see then). Otherwise, I recommend adding this to your list of Milwaukee areas to visit and enjoying the beauty of all that grows here, curated and in full bloom.

A little bummed about only daytime hours being offered right now, since the only time I could visit is over a lunch break. May 1 will be here soon, bringing night and weekend hours for working folks and families. Parking lot is plentiful and easy to navigate. I really encourage a membership for those who visit often. It's so cool to watch the gardens grow and change throughout the seasons. Your membership also gets you into the Domes for free!

I came with a particular need in mind, shade annuals to plant in a specific area. I assumed going to a local business rather than a chain would entail more of a personal touch but I didn't get that. The two employees greeted me but didn't ask if I needed any help so I figured I'd just roam around and see what I could find. I didn't think the types of plants were labeled very well, so I ended up back at the register to ask for advice. After I interrupted her reading a magazine, the lady gave me a couple of suggestions and pointed to areas I could look but it would have been nice if she walked me to the spot and helped me look for what she recommended. She also mentioned they were out of the options that may be a good fit so I guess, come earlier than the first week of June for a full selection. We aren't all garden experts and I was hoping they would be. Anyway, I figured out what to get by reading the markers in the plants. I can't say for sure, but I feel like I was also overcharged for the plants I selected. You'll see in my picture but their pricing for most items is based on the size of the container. How do I know the guy who rang me up picked the right price? My receipt didn't provide details so I couldn't verify later. Anyway, I like the plants I selected but I don't think I'll return. I get more of a personal touch with plant advice from my local hardware store (though they have a limited selection).

They do offer bottled water if you don't bring your own and gloves/tools. The staff is super friendly and thanks the group profusely for our hard work. It's about 75 acres of land that consists of planted plots, fruit bearing trees, fishery, somewhere there are goats and even a park area. They need people, volunteers, to help with the harvesting or gardening, etc. A nice sized group of people can really accomplish a lot for them and for those who need this food. I personally feel that no one should be hungry in this rich country of ours. And I love the fact they grow it - as you know many people on a limited income are cost conscious and the cheaper food is the stuff that comes in a tin can, box, or cellophane and is highly processed! From the ground?! Now this is how you feed the hungry. Our shift was about 3 hours and it's hard work. That may not seem long but the effort you put in - wow I just can't imagine the people who did this for a living all day for most of their lives. We are so dang lucky, y'all. Anyways, please check it out if looking for someplace to volunteer and if you are not averse to some outside work. It feels great having done it! Things to consider: - bringing an extra change of socks/shoes - towel if rainy/wet - baseball capping it - layers, layers, layers! You can always take off but it sucks if you can't add on - sunblock If looking for a spot to eat and/or get a drink after volunteering, The Hideaway is just south on 76th street, is casual and has great food and great staff!
