I took my boat out last Thursday after launching the boat realized I had no steering, made it back to the dock brought the boat over to Whitewater Marine at 9:01 in the morning as they were just opening. I explained to Jeff who I just met what my problem was. He told me he would do his best to get it repaired and it would take a couple of days instead I received a call an hour later saying that the parts were on its way. that was Thursday Friday morning I received a call saying the boat was finished. They went out of their way. Got the part. Got me back in the water roughly 24 hours between Jeff and Tom. They gave me a call and full discussion on the boat and engine, including full report from the EMM printed and ready. They didn't add any parts or labor to the bill that weren't needed. I dropped my Grady off in the morning for them to repair the trim piston seals and caps... they performed that service and checked my throttle cable with SAME DAY TURNAROUND! Rating Key: 1 star= zero stars I brought my boat here once. Here are the facts: after I was dispossessed of my boat by signing to "authorize repair"--it was game on. I might have saved a little grief if I was, although wise enough, strong enough in conviction, while navigating the request during initial arrangements, to never sign "to authorize repair" of any kind unless a price is agreed upon in advance, e.g., " to authorize the above stated repair(s) at the above stated prices for parts, material and labor" The smarter oratory approach would have been: " you have my repair request, please provide me with a written estimate--which I will gladly sign. If anything of concern comes up, I'll pay for the diagnostic time, and please provide me with an additional written estimate/change order, but I'm not signing:" to authorize repair"-- I want a concise understanding of the costs involved, every step of the way. It probably would have been ineffectual, and I would have been stonewalled, met by him expressing feigned indignation at my request; nevertheless, consoling. My signature on that thick, manilla carte blanche work order dispossessed me of my boat and rendered me essentially carrion waiting to be consumed. " here is your receipt for pick-up" The whole premise of conducting business in this manner is now a five alarm fire in my head when dealing with potential service providers in this and other repair related fields. You sign and they own you. When a presentation/proposal is staged like this to me now, I look for the door. This is a lesson learned. My scheduled pick-up day (birthday) came and went. Tommy's smile was gone by now, as was his willingness to answer the phone. Pick-up day arrives: I was verbally treated abusively by Tommy, the owner, when I questioned the fact that there was zero itemization on a 3,000.00 bill. A bill that I later pulled apart--researching cost and book time, discovering I paid double the fair price. When I say he was abusive I mean he talked down to me like he was reading from a well rehearsed playbook. My grievances were met with verbal palisades of patronizing, relaxed and offensive one liners, as if to say: I expected this, hear my verbal subterfuge and go away-- next victim please. I received my boat with damage to the trailer and the boat fiberglass: "well, I guess I just can't please you..can I?" I received my boat late, very late, after a thorough and disrespectful, condescending lambasting, citing all the rich clients my little boats time to repair will interfere with, if repaired as requested and agreed upon-- on time. Grease on the upholstery, shred/gouge marks in the fiberglass, tow chain covers shredded--by this time I was sick to my stomach. "May I have my out drive lock key"..."We gave you that already" One week later: I got stuck on the water, during initial launch, after repair. On the phone, Tommy was rude and dismissive; then, after a pregnant pause, transferred me to a disinterested service tech who was ineffectual in resolving the problem. In addition to setting the carburetor idle too low to hold idle, the trim was put so far out of adjustment it was inoperable. This was my first and last actual boat repair outsourced to Whitewater in Patchogue. Take note that I was a regular visitor to the parts counter for unrelated antique outboard restorations. After years of consistently spending a whole lot of money on Tommy's costly old outboard motor parts stock; because, I restore antique outboard motors as a hobby and was a frequent, almost daily, visitor to his parts shop-- no longer, I felt I could trust him and his team with my: 1992 Rinker /181:Mercruiser, Alpha 1, Gen2.........BETRAYAL. Well, you ask the locals what they feel of him. I have since shared my story with many people, i.e., free advertising :), and learned of others misfortunes in their dealings with him. If you are a muppet and rich-- well, you just might have a jolly and carefree, no issues experience, and be quite happy here-- cheers!. If you are a man who makes his living with his back, like me, and knows the value of a dollar, honor, integrity and respect--well, I reckon a visit here is a nightmare in waiting. Te sunt monuit! 03/31/18: Additionally, If you do everything correctly and are blindsided by a phone call indicating problems found and "I'm very busy-- do you want the additional work done" insist on a written change order or just say no! I recently moved out to Holbrook and was looking for a good marine repair company in the area. I found Whitewater Marine Service in East Patchogue. My Etec outboard would not start. I brought it to them, late Saturday afternoon of Memorial Day weekend.......The place was loaded with boats, top to bottom....Yet the owner Tom was gracious enough to shoe horn me in. Have a brand new fuel pump brought over. Then himself and his brother Jeffrey . Tag teamed the install and had me out of there in 45 minutes!!!! THERE IS NOT ANOTHER MARINE REPAIR COMPANY ON THE ENTIRE ISLAND THAT WOULD DONE THAT FOR ME!!!!!!!! From Tom the owner, to the entire staff . I have recently completed my second 250 ETEC engine from Whitewater Marine Service. I could not be more satisfied! My first purchase in 2013 was handled by Tom, the owner, and it went flawlessly. The price was the best I found on Long Island. Whitewater rigged my boat exactly as I requested it to be done, and the result was better than I could have hoped for. It was done neatly and most importantly, "on time" as promised. There were no surprise "extra charges", and the entire staff went out of their way to ensure my complete satisfaction. I have continued to service my other boats at Whitewater on a regular basis. brought my boat there for 2 basic issues.Was told it would take about a week because they had to order parts.That was understandable and expected by me.Was called the following day by one of the owners,Tom, and told the boat was ready.stunned since I expected a week instead of a day I asked "are both issues repaired?" The answer was YES both issues are fixed.Excited I left work early and battled an hour of traffic to get there before they closed.As I handed Tom payment I pulled it back and asked again "Are both issues repaired?".The owner answered "I have been doing this here for 32 years,yes both are fixed". I paid him and took my boat directly to the boat ramp only to discover that one issue was resolved and the 2nd issue was exactly the same as when I brought it there.NOT FIXED as I was assured by the owner.I had to take the next morning off from work to trailer the boat back to him.Left it for the day and when I came back the next day it was still not repaired and the owner began to attempt to sell me an extremely expensive unneeded repair job.I know a lot more about my needed repair than I lead him to believe so I was 100% sure that the $2500-$4000 job he was pitching me was totally unnecessary.I asked him if he would replace a cable which I suspected was the issue and he assured me that was not the problem.Knowing he was attempting to take advantage of me,I took my boat from him and directly to another boat repair facility and had it fixed for a $200 .White water marine of East Patchogue is extremely dishonest as far as repairs are concerned and I will never use or recommend them again.It is a shame because there is plenty of repair business to keep them busy without ripping off the trusting consumer.Had this been a more naïve or trusting consumer than myself they would have taken advantage for thousands of dollars for unnecessary repairs. read more
