I would strongly caution anyone considering horseback riding at Whitewater Equestrian, especially beginners.
Our group arrived for a scheduled ride, only for the business to run over an hour behind. Unfortunately, that was the least of our concerns.
Despite having multiple inexperienced riders in our group, we received inadequate instruction and supervision. Helmets were never offered, and we had only one guide on horseback, who was smoking cigarettes throughout the ride. At one point, we were told to simply follow the mule rather than being properly led by our guide.
The situation quickly became dangerous when the mule took off running, causing multiple horses to follow. I was thrown from my horse and injured, while my friend was pushed into multiple trees by another horse, injuring her knee. These were not minor incidents, and I genuinely believe the entire situation could have been prevented with proper guidance, trained horses, and appropriate safety precautions.
What was especially concerning was the behavior of our guide, Kayla. While one of our group members was being carried away by a horse, rather than showing urgency or concern, she made a comment along the lines of, "There goes my perfect reviews." Her lack of urgency during an already dangerous situation was shocking.
Throughout the ride, Kayla appeared unwell, disengaged, and unable to provide the level of assistance or supervision we needed. Her behavior was concerning enough that I questioned whether she was fully capable of safely leading our group. I cannot speak to the reason for her behavior, but I did not feel safe under her supervision.
To make matters worse, we have since been told that Kayla has given accounts of the incident that directly contradict what we experienced, including claims that helmets were offered and that I intentionally kicked my horse to make it run. Neither of those claims reflects my experience. It is extremely frustrating to feel that the circumstances surrounding our injuries are being misrepresented rather than taken seriously.
Despite multiple people being injured, the business has refused to issue a refund or take meaningful accountability. The lack of professionalism, concern, and compassion following such a serious incident has been just as disappointing as the ride itself.
I understand that horseback riding comes with inherent risks, but when a business offers rides to beginners, proper instruction, supervision, and safety precautions should be the bare minimum.
What was supposed to be a fun birthday experience ended with multiple people injured and a business that, in my opinion, has handled the entire situation incredibly poorly. I would absolutely not recommend Whitewater Equestrian, especially to anyone without prior horseback riding experience. read more
