Easy to get to. There were bathrooms, lighthouse, shipwreck museum and beach with sand and rocks. We were not interested in the museum or going up in the lighthouse. We walked about for a few minutes and used their bathroom. Wish had spent some time on the beach ... looking for rocks. It's a lovely spot.

Holy moly! The day after arriving at our rental cottage in…read moreMoran, Michigan on Brevoort lake, we noticed plenty of mosquitoes! Serious mosquitos! So the first thing on our list of needs, was buying a can of Off! Being that the cottage is in a fairly rural area, there aren't very many stores. But on our drive in, I noticed King's Fish Market. It was close, so I drove up. Turns out they don't sell bug spray, only smoked fish and a million other things, including Venison sausage. I purchased some smoked white fish and some venison cheddar sausage. OMG-Fantastic! They also have a little cafe and you can order fish and chips, chicken fingers etc as well. Big local beer selection too. After walking around checking everything out, I walked past a couple of women having lunch. I figured I'd ask how the food was. They then told me it was delicious, and that they have lunch there several times a week. Needless to say, my lovely wife and I will be back! And then before cashing out and leaving, the friendly owner sent me down the road to a gas station that sells Off! Bonus!

Last week, I brought a group of…read moreTexans, Missourians, and Californians here for lunch during our week-long tour through both Michigan's Lower and Upper Peninsulas. While we found this to be a charming local fish and specialty market, we were unfortunately underwhelmed by the food. Most of us ordered the 2-piece whitefish basket with fries. The fish itself seemed fresh, but the batter lacked seasoning and could have been much crispier. The fries were also fairly soggy. We also tried the whitefish chowder, which desperately needed salt. Adding a bit ourselves made a huge difference in flavor. We arrived well before the lunch rush and practically had the place to ourselves, so perhaps this was just an off day. Still, the fish baskets felt severely under-fried and lacking overall flavor, which was disappointing given the local reputation and specialty focus.

We day tripped from the Hotel to many destinations around the U.P. like the Soo Locks, Taquamenon Falls, St. Ignace, and Mackinac Island, the Taquamenon Hotel was a perfect base of operations. It was nice to come back to a clean, quiet, and friendly environment every night. This is a Hotel with a lot of history and has been well maintained, rooms are available with in suite baths or you can opt to use the communal facilities down the hall. The facilities were always clean and towels/linens were changed everyday. Some rooms have a/c, but all we needed during our stay was a fan, which was readily available. The owners Grant and Joan make you feel welcome and taken care of, and are certainly helpful when it comes to directions or suggestions for area attractions. THE FOOD: Breakfasts are available in the Hotel dining room every morning except Weds and Thurs., are as close to homecooking as you are likely to get, and reasonably priced. Coffee just keeps coming as Grant or Joan are chatting away with you and other guests. There are new breakfast burrito and breakfast enchilada specials offered. We had omelettes, pancakes, bacon (very good), sausages, and toasts (get the rye) on our visits. A full compliment of condiments is available on the tables' lazy Susan, someone local makes them and Grant will be happy to tell you about them and how to get one of your own. The dining room is nicely appointed and the decorations feature strongly the many outdoor activities and history of the local area. There is a lounge area with couches, big screen tv, and DVD player just off the lobby; after touring all day, Grant was very accommodating to make sure we were comfortable and had everything we needed for a movie night. The entire atmosphere had a real family feel, folks were happy to engage in conversation or leave you be if you needed some quiet time to update your travel log online, wifi is available and works well. We couldn't have been more pleased with our experience at the Tahquamenon Hotel, a great value, and a place I recommend to others looking for a clean, comfortable place to stay while exploring the U.P. https://www.tripadvisor.com/ShowUserReviews-g42329-d7134808-r413074452-Tahquamenon_Hotel-Hulbert_Upper_Peninsula_Michigan.html#

The entire hotel smells and looks very nice. Rooms are very comfy and make you feel cozy and at home. Breakfast was absolutely delicious and filling. It was the cheapest meal I had eaten while traveling through the UP while also being the best tasting, looking, and portions were big. My boyfriend and I will definitely be coming to stay here again next time we travel north!!

The fried pickles we ordered tasted bad. It tasted like they haven't changed the oil in the deep fryer in a very long time. We ordered ranch dressing with them and they brought out tartar sauce then kept saying it was ranch. Hubby ordered baked spaghetti and it came out as a bowl of goulash. If they are out of stuff they need to say so. Mom ordered French Onion soup and it was so salty she could barely eat it and was extremely thirsty the rest of the day. It was so bad I forgot to take pictures. Come on, how is this a four star restaurant?

I had maybe 8 normal sized tortilla chips and it was gone. $10 for the smallest cheese dip serving. And then the cheese dip was grainy and bland. Just awful. Then came the chimichanga. This was an absolute embarrassment. The chicken was awful and then they put some kind of chimi sauce on it. It looked like somebody puked on the burrito. And it tasted like puke on top of the chimichanga. And then, the food made me run for the border. The only positive was the waitress was friendly. But she did recommend the chimichanga and cheese dip. The place is very dark. It's because they don't want you to see what you are eating. And I don't blame them. I'm never going back again. Taco Bell puts this place to shame.
