    Ground zero marker plaque
    Nick R.

Now open twice a year (but subject to change), on the first Saturday of April and October. Strong draw for those interested in nuclear history, with access to ground zero for the world's first nuclear explosion, the McDonald ranch house where the plutonium core was assembled, and the remains of a bunker that protected cameras used to film the test. There's a lava-rock marker on the exact location the bomb, as well as one half-buried piling from the legs of the tower that housed the "gadget." Our only major disappointment was that the structure that protected an untouched section of the crater was closed, as sand has apparently covered the Trinitite that is housed there. (The rest of the area has been bulldozed over to minimize radiation exposure). There are still chunks of Trinitite littering the ground around the area, though taking them is illegal and dangerous - they are still radioactive, and remain government property. This is a very popular event with limited hours (last gate entry is at 2:00 PM and they kick everyone out of ground zero at 3:30), so best to get there on the early side. But no need for a 5 AM wakeup - we arrived at the gate at 10:15 AM, and waited for about an hour and a half before getting into the missile range. It's about a 40 minute drive to ground zero, after you get past the gate. Be sure to bring government-issued IDs and proof of insurance for your car (a rental agreement will suffice). Glad we finally made the trek! It was quite sobering to stand on the spot where the atomic age began, and contemplate the tremendous scientific achievement that unleashed such incredible destruction during WWII and existential danger for the human species ever since.

The tour itself was spooky and chilling, with a perfect atmosphere for anyone who loves a good thrill. I totally recommend doing this tour 10 out of 10!

What to expect: A…read morelot of walking but, there are frequent stops to listen to historical accounts. They do mention to come prepared as far as hydration but just note that you will have to know where to look for the nearest bathroom should you need it. The Gardener tour ends at the Gardner so, if you don't know where the nearest shop or bar that has bathrooms is... it's gonna have to wait until then. Be prepared to go over time if the tour ends on an investigation (if it's offered). Sometimes, the energy is just alive! Also, don't be afraid to ask questions or for clarification on historical accounts. They are very knowledgeable and honest in their history and in their paranormal experiences. They can only do so much as far as safety. They do wait for the appropriate times to cross streets but they remind you to be diligent in your own safety. There is traffic and not everyone yields to pedestrians. Be aware of street signs and cars. They also give heads up on sketchy pedestrians and such. But, again, you need to do your part and make sure you are alert when you spot anything odd. Call it out if you see something that others didn't. We all want to enjoy the tour as peacefully as possible. My personal experience went well! I hope with this info, others can enjoy themselves without any surprises. I had overheard others in my tour about not knowing they'd have to walk a lot or how thirsty they were and where bathrooms are but, I was annoyed if they even read the posts they gave. They do give a heads up. If anything, they (EPGT) should keep reiterating just to make sure it gets across and sticks better for people. I am really looking forward to joining another tour with these guys. They were great! -VD

It's dog friendly and the volunteer working when we visited was quite gregarious and offered our dog some treats that she makes herself to bring in for the pups that visit. Our dog is very picky so she didn't eat it, but it was very sweet and thoughtful. You could tell that the volunteer genuinely loves the museum and was super excited to have visitors to share it with. She chatted with us quite a bit and it was almost like a personal tour where she was giving us information on everything inside. During our visit only one other couple stopped in, they had a dog also, and she was just as warm and friendly to them. It's nice to hear stories from someone who really cares about the history and is clearly knowledgeable. For me, the highlight was getting to touch things that had been on the moon and returned to Earth. How many people can say they have touched something that has been on the moon? My husband thought seeing all the old astronauts food in toothpaste styled tubes was interesting. There's something about vintage space travel that's kind of fascinating and almost funny; it's interesting to see how far we've come. The murals were fine, but the museum and artifacts were probably more enjoyable to me personally. It's not a huge place but there's definitely a lot to see. We got a souvenir coin on our way out which serves as a nice little memento. It's definitely worth stopping in even if you just have a mild interest in space because the price of admission can't be beat, it's free!!
