The room and entire property were immaculately clean--honestly cleaner than many larger chain hotels we've stayed in. Everything looked freshly painted, well-maintained, and thoughtfully cared for. The landscaping and exterior were also beautifully kept, which made the whole place feel inviting and safe. What makes the White Sands Motel special is the personal touch you only get from a locally owned, family-run motel. Instead of the impersonal feel of big hotels, you feel like a valued guest here. We soaked here several times while in town visiting the area. The private tubs are a great oasis…read morethat evoke a sense of serenity and calm relaxation. We did not use the common pool area but did soak in three of the different private spaces over four visits. Each was very nice. There are two different styles of private pools here, the classics which run hotter and are a little shallower than the newer pools which they call their deluxe pools. The deluxe pools are to the left and classics to the right. The entire area is a whisper zone, so quiet and tranquil is the feel and vibe here. A guide meets you at the gazebo outside the gated area a few minutes before your session starts to check you in, let you in and point you in the right direction. All private soaking areas are named and numbered on their door front. The soaking areas are very clean, private and nicely appointed with a pair of loungers, a table of some sorts, overhead cool misters, a cold water bucket shower overhead on each pool, towel and clothes hooks and a wall clock to keep you on time, and intercom with the office. Went both during the day and the end at sunset, each offers its own experience. It seems to be quieter during the early hours, than the evening. Sessions are 50 minutes and they are prompt to get you in on time so you can enjoy your full time soaking. About five minutes before your session ends they notify you over the intercom that your time is ending so you do not run over time and allow them time to prep the space for the next people soaking. I had made the reservations about 3 weeks before. As with the last time I booked, I was very surprised that it wastn closer to sold out already. We have been to a few different hot springs some have been pretty cool, literally. The last one was outside Fairbanks Alaska in the winter. But one thing that is common at these spots is that they are communal pools. There tends to be a creeper now and then. But Riverbend has private pools, facing the Rio Grande. So this time I made note of the temps of each individual pool on the website, and got us the hottest one. It was perfect. It really does have pools that drop off right into the Rio. It was close to dusk and the river was flowing past the long shadows in front of us. The hour of relaxation flew by. It is the best we have been to. I am sorta happy that they arent so known as to be overbooked. Because we will be back again next time we are in the area.

Last night, I got sick again and was transported back to the hospital. I have a doctor's appointment tomorrow morning. I can barely get around without struggling with my oxygen. I simply asked for a little help so my caretaker could get some important paperwork I need. Instead, the manager shut me down and wouldn't allow it. Now I have to spend an extra hour getting back to the hotel, grabbing what I need, and then getting an Uber or Lyft just to make it to my appointment. What happened to empathy? What happened to kindness? It's sad that someone can see another person struggling this badly and still not even try to help. Sometimes people stay in a position for so long that they forget the person standing in front of them is human. I hope the person responsible realizes how wrong and hurtful that was. She should be ashamed of the way she treated someone who was already struggling just to breathe. I expected basic compassion and understanding. Instead, I was made to feel disrespected and dismissed. The place is family-owned and -run, and as a guest there you are welcomed and made to feel at home by Linda Lundeen and her daughter, Lydia. Each room is themed to a particular artist. We enjoyed the Georgia O'Keeffe room, which was bathed in natural light. Another visitor mentioned that their room had but one small window. This is an older and decidedly eclectic place, so don't expect a modern room with all the amenities. The place's charm more than makes up for it. Good coffee is ready at 6:30 am along with pastries, with a hot homemade breakfast served at 8:30. Fruit and juice are available. Linda Lundeen visits with everyone during breakfast. At age 86, she is sharp, spunky, and has a positive outlook. She reminded me greatly of my sister. We would stay at Lundeen's again in a heartbeat.

At some point, this will be a nice place to spend a day or an overnight, but that day is not here…read moreyet. At the present moment, the hot springs has two pools open. One is tiny and maybe fits 2 actual adults, except the temperature in the spring is 110-111. That makes it very uncomfortable to sit all the way in. There is a pipe that pipes in cool water if you want it, but even with the thing running full blast, the water will not get below 108. Again, too hot for most people. The second tub fits 8 people although it is quite shallow. The temperature of that one was 102-103, which made it more comfortable to stay in for the entire 45 minute session. Now, here are the reasons why I am only giving the place 3 stars: 1. The place is undergoing major construction projects, resulting in large piles of dirt, yellow police tape, and poor signage, so that people coming to the site have no idea where to check in. To get there, you have to drive down a one-way sand road that goes underneath a railroad trestle. The area is not accessible to emergency vehicles. 2. There is no way to communicate with the person in charge without walking all the way back to the main office. 3. People are not clear on how long their sessions are supposed to be. There is no signage or instructions. The people right before us stayed in the pool for a full hour and then stood around on the deck getting dressed while we were getting in. What should be obvious from what I just said: there is no cleaning of anything between customers. 4. The existing pools have no privacy whatsoever. The owners are in the process of building a lot more pools that also have no privacy whatsoever. 5. The atmosphere surrounding the pools leaves something to be desired; not just the big piles of dirt, but the fact that in the evening you can hear the unskilled musical screamings coming from the Blue Moon bar in Radium. So, not peaceful, although inadvertently hilarious.

Last night when we arrived we were out in the room we had purchased online and the room was fine. Today when we finished loading the truck for 5 hours we just wanted to get back to the room and take a hot shower and get all the filth off of us. We go up to the room and unlike last night and the morning when the water was hotter than needed, the water was only cold and eventually wasn't strong enough to come out of the shower head. We called the front desk and then found out they were replacing the water heater. It would be a few hours and then of course who knows how long to heat the water. I went down to the front desk and was greeted by Tory. I explained we felt grimy and sticky and was hoping they had another room not affected by our water heater that we could shower in so we could go out in public. Tory went one better and offered us a room in the main building that had hot water. She wanted to make sure that there may be no problems with the new water heater that would affect us in the evening or tomorrow. We have now showered and feel nice and clean and ready to enjoy our last night in Alamogordo. Thank you Tory for going above and beyond. This will be an example I can give others as to why I like this hotel. Also, their hot breakfast is top notch.
