Mesilla Plaza is the center point of the old and historic town of Mesilla located next to Las Cruces, New Mexico. Mesilla is known for the Spanish style architecture of its buildings. The plaza is located right across from the Basilica of San Albino and is surrounded by numerous boutique shops and restaurants. Mesilla isn't very big, so you can definitely see the whole historic area in a short amount of time. The plaza is somewhat plain, but it is highlighted by a gazebo displaying the US and Mexico flags, as well as benches to sit on to take in the sights. While the plaza isn't worth seeing specifically, it is one of the reasons why Mesilla is worth visiting. read more

Cute spot and definitely "something to do" while visiting Las Cruces, but as a dude, I wouldn't go far out of my way for a visit. If you're into poking around in gift shops, you'll enjoy this place. There are also a few restaurants, but none of them came up in my earlier searches as "must-trys." There is a bandstand or gazebo in the middle, so I expect that there are fun concerts and other events when the weather is better. I believe that it dates back to at least the 1850s, so lots of low doorways and a good amount of history, if you're willing to unpack and digest it. There's also the Gadsden Museum, which is only open Wed-Sat by appointment. read more

June 1, 2023 - Mesilla Plaza (Las Cruces, NM) This is a pretty neat little historic town plaza, with a park in the middle surrounded by shops and restaurants. There is a gazebo in the center of the park with benches spaced around the park. One of the highlights of the plaza is the San Albino church that sits at one end of the plaza. There is also the Billy the Kid gift shop that sits at one corner of the plaza. There is the El Patio Cantina that was established in 1934 and considered to be one of the most historic buildings in the town. There is an art gallery co-op that has lots of local artist paintings, and is staffed by many of the artists themselves. On another corner of the plaza sits what is stated to be the oldest building in New Mexico. It was built in 1860. It has been used as a saloon, general store, residence and town hall over the years. Currently, it is a large gift store called Thunderbird de La Mesilla that sells gifts, Native American jewelry, blankets and apparel, religious placards and wall art. There is also a winery store surrounding the plaza. read more

Beautiful Plaza Old Mexico Style. Gazebo in the middle of it with Church in front of it. Benches available to sit and spend quality time with your loved ones. I love to come here to forget about the monotonous everyday work life. Before COVID19 they use to have art displays. (Perhaps they still do) the plaza is surrounded by numerous shops such as candy shops, restaurants, gallerias, coffee shops, gift shops and bars. Absolutely Mexican boutique style. read more

This small but pretty plaza in Old Mesilla is a place you should visit. Numerous nice shops, restaurants and San Albino Catholic Church surround the center which has a bandstand and lawn. A 1 minute walk away is the historic La Posta restaurant. Also parking is free. You should come here and walk around, shop and eat! read more

It's fun, a little different. Cool little shops around there and good eats. So much history in that plaza, Billy the kid history. The weekends they usually have live music. If you have ever seen Ghost Adventures, the restaurant "Double Eagle" is where they shot one of their episodes. It was a great place to eat aside from the possibility of experiencing anything paranormal. It's a bit pricey but worth it. read more

La Plaza de Mesilla is a small and historically significant place in New Mexico. It was a beautiful blend of culture and military. The nearby shops and restaurants are worth checking out. One of the first things I noticed when I arrived was that it reminded me of a smaller version of the Santa Fe plaza. A number of shops line the perimeter of the plaza, and there are a number of businesses slightly beyond, as well. If you're in the Las Cruces area, it is definitely worth checking out--there is a bit of seating in the plaza itself--worth a trip out particularly if the weather is nice. read more

The Mesilla Plaza is centralized to Mesilla. It is quite modest in size, but the grounds are up kept with fresh cut grass, clean sidewalks, pretty hanging flower pots, a few nice historic signs, and of course its massive gazebo. There are small benches all around the Plaza. The town actually still holds events here so there are two sets of small bleachers set up as well. Walked around with our dogs and saw a few other people hanging out on the grass with theirs as well. Here's the thing, if you rely on the signs to give you a history briefing or read a few things about the area beforehand then honestly, you probably won't be very impressed. I actually attended a really fun outdoor walking tour a awhile back (by Preciliana Sandoval) and THAT was where I heard all the interesting stuff about the Plaza and its surrounding businesses. Conflicts, ghost stories, the legends -- ya know the juicy tidbits from history and folklore! It sheds an entirely new light on this small area and really adds character. I recommend this tour or at the very least a thorough self-guided tour so you can really immerse yourself in the history of the area. Once you do, you will have a more appreciative outlook on this small Plaza and some of the businesses around it. read more

Beautiful! Lots of historical value and fun shops, also some over priced shops too. A good mixture of shopping, food, and culture.

Interesting place, but we walked through the old town area in one hour! There were a few historical landmarks like the church and the Old courthouse/jail that were fascinating. There were also a few shops that are worth checking out. We had homemade ice cream in the chocolate shop and it was just okay. For a central old town attraction, this one left much too be desired. Afterwards, we drove down the road to see many pecan groves and that was awesome! read more

Mesilla Plaza is always a requirement for me when traveling through Las Cruces. Just a short turn down 28 and you find yourself in old Mesilla with a beautiful Church the beautiful Plaza and surrounded by shops and restaurants. I'm always happy to take a stroll around the Plaza sometimes there are vendors, sometimes there are musicians, sometime they are dancers, but always there is entertainment in history in looking about in old Mesilla. Holiday events make it even better even though I was not there at holiday on this trip I have been there on holidays on other trips and it's wonderful I encourage everyone to read about the history enjoy the stroll and enjoy the many shops that's around Mesilla Plaza read more

My first impression was that Mesilla Plaza was what Santa Fe's plaza was like 25 or 30 years ago: a small, quaint collection of NM gift shops and eateries aimed at tourists. This plaza is worth checking out if you have never seen it, but in my opinion, once you've seen a few touristy gift shops, you've seen them all. I can imagine that sitting in the middle of the plaza would be relaxing, especially with some ice cream or other treat. We didn't have time to check out any restaurants in the plaza area, but perhaps next time we're in the area, we will do that. read more

Excellent place to stop and shop. Many very quaint stores and places to eat. The Church is at the center of the Plaza and there are many historical buildings as well. We spent two hours here and found many of the shops to be very good and not as touristy as some places. The locals are extremely friendly and provide helpful tips on restaurants and other sites. read more
