Sanagan's Meat Locker is not just a Butchery, but also a market that showcases many high quality artisanal and local products. Their meats are always high quality and enhances whatever recipe you are using. There's also an educational aspect to Sanagan's. If you subscribe to their newsletter, or buy Peter Sanagan's book, you learn so much about what cuts of meat to use with what types of dishes, you discover hidden gems in cuts of meat, not to mention fantastic recipes. I had never heard of flat iron steaks (one of the most tender cuts of beef and very affordable) before Sanagan's and now it's a staple in my household. You are also able to order cuts of meat that are not available at the counter (I ordered duck hearts once) as well as order ahead online. The housemade sauces and charcuterie made by Sanagan's are also delicious. They might be slightly higher priced than supermarket brands, but they're highly worth it. Everyone is also super friendly and helpful at Sanagan's, you just know that they're being treated well there.

I haven't purchased a lot of meat there, so this review is purely for their lunchtime sandwiches, and they are good! The price has risen on the sandwich - it's not as great a deal as it was 5 years ago, but it's $6 for top quality meats on delicious kaiser or onion rolls, with lettuce and mayo-like condiments. $6 is a good deal for a good sandwich in this city, especially from a place nicknamed one of the five thieves! When I went today at 12:10 there was a large assortment of sandwiches to choose from: turkey, ham and cheese, hot salami and Italian sausage. These are big sandwiches: if they weren't so good, I'd probably only need half, but I can't resist the deliciousness of meat and mayo-like condiments on a yummy kaiser. DON'T go much later than 12:30. The sandwiches are popular and once they're gone they ain't making more that day. One time I went at 12:40 and the guy who walked in before me got the last one. So I do apologize for not having any information on their main source of business, the butcher. It all looks very good, and the guys behind the counter are really personable so I'm sure they'd help you!

They were teaching how to handle wagyu along with a few dishes to practice at home. At that price it was a steal so I jumped on it. Needless to say like many cooking classes I tried it once at home and called it a day. Now being in the neighbourhood I have started to explore things here. Their meat selection is extensive with a lot of exotic stuff to boot as well. The steaks look well marbled. The prices are what they are for this neighborhood. I was pleasantly surprised that they offered cold sandwiches as well. I went with the roast beef. The sandwich is substantial and was well seasoned with mustard. The roast beef was decent as well. Very reasonable and IMO a much better buy compared with the popular sandwich shop nearby. 3.5 stars. Will update if I start buying meat here.

I bought a Cowboy steak - yes a cowboy steak - for $88 last night thinking it would be enough for 2 people. Very very underwhelming for whiat is meant to be a premium cut. I will never go back. Frankly the premium cuts at any one of the superstores are of higher quality and grade - but if you like saying you got your meat there and impressing the neighbors - this review will mean very little to you.

To this is I reply with "Yecchhhkkk" and a "really?" You don't know what a 'good' steak is, you know what a 'best piece of meat you need to settle for' is. Bloor Meat Market IS good steaks. After a few failed stops (and a melted carton of ice cream), frustration took hold and I scanned the yelperweb for the nearest pure butchershop I could find - Bloor Meat Market was the closest to my current location and that is where I set my GPS coordinates for. For those not driving (or those driving and wondering where to go), BMM is located just east of Bloor and Jane right at the intersection of Durie and Bloor. There is ample green P parking near by and street parking. Walking in, it's all class, and old school butcher shop vibe with half a dozen butchers behind a meat counter that wraps around the entire edge of the shop. You walk up, make your choices and they quickly wrap them up in butcher paper and string (the really old school method) and hand you your meats as well as your invoice which you pay for at this vintage looking movie theatre inspired booth with a window. Amazing! The purchase yesterday was a nice pair of Ribeye steaks, which were about and inch to an inch and a half in thickness - a thing of beauty! While they were tending to my order I inquired on the best way to cook this cut (I'd heard lots of suggestions but wanted to take it from the pros). They suggested getting your grill as hot as possible (600F for me) and quickly searing each side for a minute before finishing it off for 3 minutes additional per side for medium rare. The end result was basically a religious experience. Perfectly cooked medium rare (a little more on the rare side which is exactly how I like it). A perfect cut of meat as well, well marbled but not overly fatty - delicious with only cracked pepper on it as seasoning! For the price, those two steaks ran me about $42, which is pricey meal to do on the regular. I was going to deduct a star for this but I can't punish this place for providing me top quality service and products. Plus a good Rib Eye is going to be pricey anywhere you go. I'd give this place 10 stars if I could. I can't wait to return and buy a selection of their marinate kebobs sitting in the front window- they look divine! Eatcrest Out!

But I was more impressed with their home-cooked roast beef. When I saw it at the deli meat display case, I could not resist buying it. It looked perfectly medium rare, lean, and juicy. I asked for their recommended thickness - which was paper thin. Oh yes, I was right, it was juicy, packed with beef flavor with perfect seasonings. I think it will be as good when it is thicker - next time! I learned later that their cured meat products such as sausages are also good. I am looking forward to coming here again!
