To this is I reply with "Yecchhhkkk" and a "really?" You don't know what a 'good' steak is, you know what a 'best piece of meat you need to settle for' is. Bloor Meat Market IS good steaks. After a few failed stops (and a melted carton of ice cream), frustration took hold and I scanned the yelperweb for the nearest pure butchershop I could find - Bloor Meat Market was the closest to my current location and that is where I set my GPS coordinates for. For those not driving (or those driving and wondering where to go), BMM is located just east of Bloor and Jane right at the intersection of Durie and Bloor. There is ample green P parking near by and street parking. Walking in, it's all class, and old school butcher shop vibe with half a dozen butchers behind a meat counter that wraps around the entire edge of the shop. You walk up, make your choices and they quickly wrap them up in butcher paper and string (the really old school method) and hand you your meats as well as your invoice which you pay for at this vintage looking movie theatre inspired booth with a window. Amazing! The purchase yesterday was a nice pair of Ribeye steaks, which were about and inch to an inch and a half in thickness - a thing of beauty! While they were tending to my order I inquired on the best way to cook this cut (I'd heard lots of suggestions but wanted to take it from the pros). They suggested getting your grill as hot as possible (600F for me) and quickly searing each side for a minute before finishing it off for 3 minutes additional per side for medium rare. The end result was basically a religious experience. Perfectly cooked medium rare (a little more on the rare side which is exactly how I like it). A perfect cut of meat as well, well marbled but not overly fatty - delicious with only cracked pepper on it as seasoning! For the price, those two steaks ran me about $42, which is pricey meal to do on the regular. I was going to deduct a star for this but I can't punish this place for providing me top quality service and products. Plus a good Rib Eye is going to be pricey anywhere you go. I'd give this place 10 stars if I could. I can't wait to return and buy a selection of their marinate kebobs sitting in the front window- they look divine! Eatcrest Out!

For the money they charge, you'd expect the best steak you've ever had, but not only were the steaks no good, they were bad. The striploin was either aged too long, or had begun to turn. Very dry, tough and the fat tasted gamey. In fairness, I have purchased from them three times, and the fist time was excellent. However the last two times major disappointment.

On lazy days, or when I need something convenient to impress people, or both, I get their chicken. They marinated them way better than I do. The fact that the shop is not a restaurant made it so that the fried chicken went from the fryer to my mouth in about 30 seconds. I will not lie; I might've needed a little help with them, but it was still such a fun snack to have on the side. They are nice and small with selected items such as pasta, sweets, cheese, and of course, meat and meat products. Warmth is felt through services, and also their items most of which are locally sourced. The fillet mignon (AAA Ontario Beef) was tender and flavorful. But I was more impressed with their home-cooked roast beef. When I saw it at the deli meat display case, I could not resist buying it. It looked perfectly medium rare, lean, and juicy. I asked for their recommended thickness - which was paper thin. Oh yes, I was right, it was juicy, packed with beef flavor with perfect seasonings. I think it will be as good when it is thicker - next time! I learned later that their cured meat products such as sausages are also good. I am looking forward to coming here again!

Sanagan's Meat Locker is not just a Butchery, but also a market that showcases many high quality artisanal and local products. Their meats are always high quality and enhances whatever recipe you are using. There's also an educational aspect to Sanagan's. If you subscribe to their newsletter, or buy Peter Sanagan's book, you learn so much about what cuts of meat to use with what types of dishes, you discover hidden gems in cuts of meat, not to mention fantastic recipes. I had never heard of flat iron steaks (one of the most tender cuts of beef and very affordable) before Sanagan's and now it's a staple in my household. You are also able to order cuts of meat that are not available at the counter (I ordered duck hearts once) as well as order ahead online. The housemade sauces and charcuterie made by Sanagan's are also delicious. They might be slightly higher priced than supermarket brands, but they're highly worth it. Everyone is also super friendly and helpful at Sanagan's, you just know that they're being treated well there.
