On the darkest, coldest and wettest of December days, myself and a pal called in here after a long day's hiking on the Gritstone Trail (highly recommended in itself). We were weather-beaten and famished - so what a wonderful welcome to be greeted by both of the owners on the way in. We were even more delighted to see that a roast (I chose beef, my pal turkey) was only £8.95. Not bad for a village which pulls in the tourist traffic, coming and going from the nearby Lyme Hall (note to all Pride and Prejudice fans: well worth a visit!)
The portions were huge, my beef was succulent, the red wine we ordered to accompany the meal, was fruity and warming. The service was fantastic. The female owner brought us ample amounts of homemade sauces.
If I had to be picky, the only thing I'd fault were the vegetables. A bit too watery and crunchy for me, though I believe some people prefer them like that, but I couldn't taste anything. Maybe the taste had been boiled away. Who knows, I still ate it! Everything else was spot on though! read more
