While on Nantucket I had breakfast at the Brant Point Grill. It is part of the white Elepant. The Grill is in a he back of the hotel with a permanent canopy. The walls roll up when the weather is nice. It looks out at Nantucket Harbor. I am not sure if I come for the view or food. I'd say both. I arrived before their 8:00 opening. They let me take a seat while they finished setting up. They have whatever you are looking for on their menu. No one leaves hungry. I had the the three egg omelette with peppers, spinach and mushrooms substituting fruit for the hash browns. They brought me my bill without asking. The waiter checked several times to see if I needed anything. He had definitely had some coaching because everything was perfect. A tad bit pricey but that is Nantucket from you. I was very excited to come to this hotel only because I know it's so damn expensive but there was an exclusive rate for $359 and yes it was off season but I got the basic room tent rate which meant there was a event happening on the main lawn which blocks the view of the lawn and waterview. Well this "tent" ended up being a convention hall. The main building wasn't as grandiose as I thought it would be but nonetheless the hotel has been renovated to contemporary luxury. The hotels and rooms are spread out in the town and separate complexes. The room was comfortable but I wasn't overly wowed because it wasn't luxury. It was very basic for the price on or off season. No wow effect whatsoever. The service was fine and everybody seems to be professional and polite. They have pastries and coffee in the morning and tea in the afternoon In the lobby area. When you walk through the hallways to your room they call the art gallery. My husband won a use of a BMW for 4 hours to see the sites of Nantucket which was nice. The hotel holds your stuff at checkout if you want to go into town and your ferry leaves late. The hotel is near children's Beach and you can walk to the Brant Point lighthouse and Beach. There is a shuttle bus that picks you up from the dock to the hotel. There is a restaurant in the hotel Grant Point grill which is very good but again the ambience was underwhelming inside. There is a pool but it was closed for the season. Elevator was broken too. I would like to experience this hotel without a mammoth structure on the grounds of the hotel. I can't say I was impressed but I don't believe it was worth the price I paid for even off-season. We had the most wonderful stay at the White Elephant. I've been coming to Nantucket since I was born, with family on island, however, I'd never been during off season. We decided to spend a week in ACK during early November and I'm so glad we did. While not everything is open due to the season and covid, it was so special visiting the island with so little traffic, no crowds, and the hotel so quiet. Staff: The staff at the White Elephant are absolutely wonderful. Huge shout out to Alice (pronounced Elise), Clive, and the rest of the staff. They provided the best recommendations, were so cheery and helpful, and truly made the trip even better. Covid: All Covid precautions were in place, and we felt incredibly safe staying at the White Elephant. There was hand sanitizer everywhere, everyone was wearing masks, robes were wrapped in plastic in the room, and everything was sparking clean. Location: The location can't be beat, right in town, walking distance to all of the shops and restaurants. You're right on the harbor, and it's the perfect spot for having a glass of wine or catching the sunrises/sunsets. The grounds were immaculate, even in November. They have a raffle twice a day where you can put your name in to be selected to drive one of their beautiful BMWs for four hours. This was a fun touch to drive around the island and they sanitize the vehicles prior to and after use. They also have a free shuttle that will bring you around. Room: I recommend getting a harbor view room if possible. Our room was on the ground floor and had a fireplace, a beautiful patio overlooking the harbor, and was incredibly clean and spacious. The bed was so comfortable with the softest sheets, and perfect pillows. Dining: Brant Point Grill, attached to the hotel, was a great spot to grab breakfast (complimentary coffee/pastries in the AM) or a drink and some oysters in the evening. Nate makes the BEST espresso martinis ever. Spa: The 90 minute Detoxifying Algae Wrap & Body Massage was life changing. Laura at the front desk helped choose the perfect treatment and I believe it was done by Jenn, but will have to confirm. 10/10. We really had a perfect stay here and can't wait to return. read more

The food here gave me mixed feelings, since the seafood was incredible and very fresh and the steak was atrociously cooked. The white elephant is a staple in nantucket in the summers, especially for a nice drink. The hotel itself is a bit antiquated for the price compared to other destinations. It's very centrally located, but still secluded and away from the main tourist crowd. You're about a five minute walk from the center of everything in downtown Nantucket. read more

Don't stay here! Buyer beware!!! Back in 2022, we had a reservation to stay here. Heard great things and wanted to check it out. So unfortunately, like a week before the trip my baby got covid. Covid and Massachusetts don't mix let alone getting on an airplane. So I called to explain what happened. It was pulling teeth but they gave me a credit to use it. But the caveat somehow I don't recall is that this credit expired. Even worse I didn't realize this until I went to schedule a new trip in 2025. Called in and the same reservation rep took the call and pulled it up to tell me it expired and nothing can be done. Her manager called me back 24 hours later to have no compassion or grace whatsoever. Told me to consider the cancellation cost! $3600!! Are you kidding? I told them that I was going to be staying more days and spend money on dining and whatnot. She could care less. Asked to speak to her manager and she said that's the VP and insinuated he wouldn't deal with such a petty situation that she's the only one to deal with it. Terrible management. Terrible policies. Absolutely awful customer service. Only stay here if you are absolutely 10000% sure you'll be arriving because they are heartless and only want your money. More precisely 3.5 stars. The hotel is very nice. The pool is nice but a bit removed. No valet parking. The room had a beautiful view of the wharf but with the restaurant is was loud/awkward when you exited your room and when you sat out on deck it was as if you were in the restaurant. The bellman were very helpful and quick with luggage. Room service was quick as well. The location was prime for being downtown. Parking was easily accessible and hotel did offer shuttles to airport and ferry. read more

I think the White Elephant suffers from the primary problem of Nantucket: impossibly high expectations which they definitely don't meet. After all, when you come to the billionaire's playground, splurge on paying over $2000/night for a suite, you are expecting -- and reasonably so in my opinion -- something more. And, in fact, they deliver something less. It all started with the pre-arrival concierge. They sent us a message offering pre-arrival concierge services, to which I responded asking about dinners and activities. They were rude and worse yet, totally ineffective. Translation: "uh, there's this thing called OpenTable and you should use that and btw you're probably screwed because if you haven't done it yet, everything is full." The only good news was that I realized I was "on my own" from the outset and did, after considerable effort manage to get some reservations booked. The initially shocking thing to me was that THEY COULDN'T EVEN HELP YOU GET RESERVATIONS AT THEIR OWN RESTAURANTS at the White Elephant or the Wauwinet. (Hint: perhaps block some tables for guest in the highly likely event some guests need them and the more crowded the Island, the more you need to do this.) Then I discovered the root cause of that problem: **weddings**. That beautiful patio bar we quite fortunately had a drink at our first night was literally closed every other night we wanted to go there because of ... weddings. I get that hotels host weddings and this seems a fine place to have one. But don't promise that you have a nice bar and a nice restaurant when they are effectively closed every weekend for a wedding event. That said, the bar (as well as the resto) was partially open (the indoor part) but on a nice July day in Nantucket, I don't want to be in the yacht-club-esque indoor part, I want to be on that nice patio / courtyard that only the guests for Chad and Ashley's wedding could access. You know, the nice courtyard in the pictures on the website. The rest was episodic. Some stuff was great: the room service did a great, friendly, and prompt job one night. The waiters we had for breakfast at Brant Point (thankfully no one gets married in the morning) were delightful. The bartenders were great. The housekeepers were great. The front desk staff: no so much. The concierge, as mentioned: useless. While it's clear you can't rely on the front desk for reservations, they also can't help with transportation. Totally useless in helping secure a taxi and please God stop hyping the "BMW Courtesy Car" which, you later learn, can only take you one mile and you are directed rudely by the front desk to request it 45 minutes before you need to leave. Wait, I need to ask 45 minutes early for a courtesy car that can only take me as far as a 20-minute walk. Definitionally useless. (And, no, you can't reserve it either -- first come, first serve at the front desk.) If they were truly empathetic, they'd tell you to accept your fate and either say "take a bike, which we offer free, because we can't help" or "here's a Wave (public transport map) and a $10 ticket and off you go." IMHO, if you're not a bike-everywhere person you are basically stuck on Nantucket if you don't figure out the Wave. (We were literally got stuck in Madatek -- no taxi, no Uber, no courtesy car, no nothing -- tried to use the Wave, but a few of us were eating ice cream and waved off from entering the bus like lepers.) The room itself was in the residences behind the pool and delightful. Much to our surprise, the building across the street housed a sushi restaurant which, much to our bigger and more unpleasant surprise, turned into a club with pretty loud music and people outside. If you go to bed early and are noise sensitive, this could be a problem. Overall, I would neither come back to this place nor recommend it to others. I'd probably AirBnB a house, instead. If you're not going to get the benefits of a hotel, then, well, why stay at one? read more

To say we were impressed would be an understatement. My fiancé (now wife) and I stayed at the hotel, as well as having our rehearsal dinner at the on-site restaurant. The White Elephant hotel is a beautiful property and is centrally located in Nantucket. The staff is pleasant and professional. Rooms are well-appointed, clean & comfortable. So why 2 stars?: First, I had actually booked a room at WE's sister property, the famed Jared Coffin house. As I was leaving for the island, I received a call from Jared Coffin saying that the room I had booked had been simultaneously booked by another person and that the room had been assigned to the other booker. While things like this surely happen, I found Jared Cofffin's explanation a bit suspect as I had booked my room "on the spur of the moment" at 12:53am the morning of my check in day--so yes, there would have had to have been another weird person booking same day hotel rooms in the wee hours of the morning. I'm guessing there actually never was a room at Jared Coffin. Anyway, I was impressed with White Elephant upon arrival. However, my room key cards repeatedly would not work, despite the hotel's many attempts to repair the issue. Thus, every time I wanted to get into my room, I had to trek out to the front desk (located in a different building) to get into the room I had paid $700 / night for. The second (or third if you count the booking mix up) issue was that the water for the the bathroom sink still ran when turned to the off position. You needed to find the special point before off to get the water to stop. Wasn't difficult, but annoying for $700 / night. The icing on the cake was when I tried to watch TV and discovered that the remote control had no batteries. Honestly, all in all it felt like someone had sabotaged the entire room before I got there. The staff was highly responsive to all of these issues. I would've preferred, however, an entirely new room given the many defects with mine. Unfortunately, the White Elephant was fully booked, so I was stuck with what I got. I hate to be grading poorly because of my bad luck, but at this price point one expects something far closer to perfection. read more

Great location in Nantucket! Rooms are very comfortable. Very clean with comfortable beds. Hotel has nice amenities such as bikes, beach chairs, towels, courtesy cars and ferry pick up and drop offs. Make sure you reserve EVERYTHING prior to arrival. Including dinner reservations, pool cabanas ($200 a day), beach loungers and umbrellas. If you don't, don't expect anything to be granted the same day. This place has no issue in saying no and they are not apologetic about it. And if this is your first time in Nantucket, I wouldn't want you to be disappointed and be caught by surprise. The younger staff lacks training and or support from management. Pool is small but very nice. The pool staff is very courteous (I scheduled everything prior to our arrival - so things went as planned). The hotel restaurant, Brant Point Grill, is nice. Pretty view. Decent wine list and menu. Again, reserve in advance. If you're stopping in for pre-dinner drinks and to enjoy the view, the high tops are first come-first serve ( I did see "reserved" signs on a couple high tops but was told no when I requested to reserve one- go figure... it's Nantucket and like, Boston, the island itself is cliquey so best if you know someone who can get you in anywhere the same day). The restaurant hostess was very young but sweet and courteous. At $625-$725 a night for a standard room... the service/etiquette is not what one would expect if they were staying at the St. Regis, Peninsula at the same rate of $725-$800 a night... So, plan ahead. Ask lots of questions and get all your requests in when they first reach out to you prior to your arrival. Side note, during this "prior to arrival contact", I was told the hotel only made reservations for restaurants owned by the resort. Well, as I was checking out, I heard someone confirming a reservation for a guest with a restaurant in town, not associated with the hotel. Kind of disappointing. Plan ahead! Ask questions. Ask about what amenities the hotel has to offer you. They will not offer up this info and I'd hate for you to miss out. Would I stay at the White Elephant again? Yes, I would. I think the location is great and the rooms are very comfortable. read more

My husband and I recently visited Nantucket and stayed at The White Elephant on a trip with several other couples. The Pros: the grounds are absolutely stunning. The location is amazing - you're right on the water with a view of the boats. You can also easily walk to most spots in the heart of downtown. It's a larger hotel and has nice amenities, though we never used the pool or spa, etc. But the food and drinks were excellent! The Cons: the prices are as though you're staying in a 5-star hotel in Japan, and the service does not even come close to meeting the prices. To me, the Montage is an excellent example of service / an entire experience worth paying for. But in addition, the rooms are dated and have very little privacy if you have a water view (everyone can walk right past you on the walkways outside of each room that are between your room and the view unless you pay even more for your own private balcony that no one can walk past). Also, if you decide to book a room anywhere near speakers beneath you from either the spa or the restaurant to save a few bones, be prepared to be awakened in the morning to the bass below that "they have no control over". I'm a night owl and we were out with friends each night, but I would be awakened each morning by the music beneath by 6 or 7am. The first night, it was never even turned off overnight. I had to request it the next day. But the service is really what turned our entire group off. Without going into way too much detail, basically every basic request we asked for was a NO. We were joking about it as a group that literally every single thing any one of us had asked for was met with a no. And there are A LOT of rules, and there is no bending them. The customer is NOT always right at The White Elephant - the customer is always wrong, and I do not think that is appropriate for the price. read more

I stayed here with a large group for a girls weekend... we all loved it so much!! They have everything you could need and it seems like lots of kiddos were pretty well taken care of too (right near the beach, red wagons available for the taking, corn hole, etc) happy hour and breakfast outside was amazing and we did not come across a soul that was not happy to help us! Rooms and beds are so nice and comfortable; ours had a fireplace, too. This spot is baller. With that, it's the most I've paid for a hotel room... ever. Welcome to Nantucket during the summer. Located steps from the ferry, harbor front and town, the location is perfect. The rooms are more understated luxury chic and much more private than a bed and breakfast. The king suite with a partial harbor view came with a private little deck and was a wonderful place to unwind after a long day. At the end of the day, I don't quite think it's worth the money, but I'm not an everyday baller, so there's a difference. We were celebrating an occasion (!!!!) and they came by with complimentary champagne with strawberries and cream; that was unexpectedly awesome. Through the whole process of talking about hosting a dinner, spending the night, taking portrait pictures, the staff here was top notch and very receptive and helpful. I can see why this place is a wedding machine; they know how to take care of their customers.* A few things I noticed, but did not partake: - Complimentary BMW** shuttle to downtown, although Nantucket is easily walkable. - Free 2 hour port and cheese reception in the library. - A fitness center - Free parking - Free breakfast pastries - $25 off the spa - A cute little gift bag to take home. - A well stocked gift shop with some really great items. - I haven't been to the Brant Point Grill in years, but those views. The hotel may be nice but the spa at the White Elephant is sub-par. It shouldn't really be called a spa as it has no amenities (locker rooms, sauna, steam room, relaxation room, etc.), rather a waiting room with chaise lounges connected to the receptionist's area (It's noisy and the least bit relaxing) and a couple of rooms for treatments. The massage which I was informed would be a Swedish style massage was nothing of the sort and made my jaw drop when I saw the bill ($198, gratuity was already included). Just stay home. read more

Beautiful hotel and conveniently located -- walking distance to best restaurants but far enough to be quiet and cozy. A short walk to the lighthouse and beach. Cars are available. Despite scheduling our couples massage for our anniversary over a month in advance, the spa cancelled our appointment twice on short notice and could not accommodate us. After settling for a single massage at the end of our stay, I was charged for the massage even though I had a gift certificate to cover the full value. It has been 2 weeks since the charge popped up on my credit card and I have not received a refund or call back from Ellie, the spa manager. I even reached out to hotel management and still no response or correction. Certainly not the 5 star property we've visited for over 10 years. It will be a long time before we consider going back. We were there for a wedding & had to get to numerous locations. The staff had a car for us night & day. During our 4 days I met two managers that couldn't be nicer (Bettina & MacKenzie). We spent a weekend at the White Elephant and overall the experience did not match up to the price point. My husband and I are very well travelled but had yet to experience Nantucket. The White Elephant seemed like the obvious choice but we were very disappointed. The room was spacious with a great view but the walls were incredibly thin and you could hear everything going on at night. It did not make for a comfortable nights sleep. Add to that a strange noise that came from the bathroom at night that neither one of us could figure out. The spa was sub-par at best. We had a 90-minute and a pre-natal which felt more like someone just rubbing oil on us. We have been to many spas across the country and this was by far our biggest let down. The treatments do not match what you would expect at this price. The staff was nice, but rushed us out the door on our last day. We were finishing up packing to grab the shuttle and they called 3 times and knocked once to ask us to rush out the door. I have never in my life experienced such poor treatment when paying these prices. The staff also neglected to inform us of the included gratuity for room service. There was nothing stating it on the menu and not once did the staff mention it until our last day. We also had to speak with 4 different staff members to resolve an issue with our bill. We had paid for the babymoon package but were charged for the pre-natal massage. They kept promising to resolve all weekend but by the time we went to checkout, the full charge was still there. They did resolve it, but I should not have had to ask 4 different times to get this done. We came here to relax but the experience was nothing but stressful. This hotel does not match up to the price point plain and simple. I would not stay again and truly cannot recommend. The 2 stars are simply for the location and views, everything else was a let down. read more

The White Elephant Hotel is unequivocally a top tier hotel with an outstanding friendly and attentive staff that provides exceptional service around the clock. My wife and I stayed four nights/five days, and from beginning to end, we had a wonderful and relaxing vacation. Our immaculate room had a great view of the harbor/Children's Beach. We highly recommend their couples massage offering, and we also enjoyed a delicious low key dinner at the Brant Point Grill. The staff provided some wonderful suggestions/recommendations, everything from dining spots like American Seasons and LoLa 41 to renting a Mini convertible from Affordable Rentals and driving around the island (and of course stopping by Bartlett's Farm and Cisco Brewery). Five stars? Well, it should be five stars for over $730 a night. The rooms are very nice, but surprisingly understated. I've stayed in bigger and more luxurious rooms, but given that this is an old building with a great view of the harbor, I am not going to complain about it. The money truly goes towards the incredible level of service that comes with staying here. If there is an employee around, you won't even get to touch a door. There is a free shuttle service to anywhere in the downtown area, and they will arrange for just about anything you want. We needed an ice bucket and it was at our door about two minutes after I hung up. Lots of nice touches are throughout your stay: bottles of water each night at turn-in, taking in cushions from the chairs out on the deck so they stay dry, and many others that I'm forgetting about. With all of that, I still don't know if it is worth over $700 a night. However, you don't go to Nantucket for a good value, so I won't knock them for it. read more

Fantastic first-rate Hotel/Resort. Actually the resort includes a series of buildings, with different accommodations, from hotel to separate cottage and condo-like residences. The rooms are beautifully finished, with artwork, extensive wood accents, great beds, and upgrades with suites, multiple rooms, and all the bathroom upgrades imaginable. Stayed over Thanksgiving, with an incredible discount, and was upgraded to a water-view room with fireplace. My friends were moved into a suite. Service (including rides in the van to restaurants and back and forth to the ferry) was outstanding. The staff makes the place a delight, and were helpful with recommendations and fun things to look for on the island in the off season. I plan to make it an annual Thanksgiving tradition. Maybe next year, I'll save up and try the Thanksgiving feast. read more

We had room accommodations at the White Elephant, and got upgraded to an ocean view suite! The rooms were incredibly large and spacious, with a bedroom, living room with fireplace, and backyard facing the ocean. The staff surprised us with a complimentary bottle of Laurent Perrier champagne and desserts for our stay, which was amazing! They certainly made our stay very welcoming, with plenty of bottled water stocked up in our fridge, and taking care of any other requests as needed. They go above and beyond to ensure your stay is comfortable and relaxing; with a concierge on staff as well to help you navigate the island. Downtown Nantucket is only a few blocks walking distance, with one of the main highlight attractions of the lighthouse and beach also a few blocks in the other direction. Customer Service didn't exist at the Front Desk. I used to work at the White Elephant when it was a real 5Star Hotel. I went back and was shocked at how little attention they pay. Not only did they not greet me when I walked in (I was the only one in the lobby) but they were too engaged in their own conversation in their native language. When I did ask a question, it was very clear I had interrupted. I asked a few questions at the front desk and they were not helpful, I bought an item in the gift shop and was asked if I wanted a bag. I got a plain bag with no logo, very generic, and the girl threw my credit card on the counter around the plexiglass like it had burned her hand!! Not welcoming, not friendly, not helpful. It's gone a long way downhill since I worked there. read more

The rooms were impeccably clean with comfortable beds that rival W & Westin Heavenly Beds. Location was great - short walk to the heart of DT, restaurants, shopping, Whaling Museum, etc... Only negatives: no late checkout (past 2pm) w/out half day charge even if no one is checking into your room, fitness center is lame, internet forces continual logons -odd. As others have noted this property is expensive - that should be obvious. If you're asking whether it's worth the money, it's probably not since you're asking the question. read more

Fantastic experience! Tanya and her team have been nothing short of outstanding here at the Residences during our stay. We cannot say enough good things about the room, the grounds, the staff, the amenities... The stay was so good that while we'd originally thought that this might be our only trip to Nantucket (quite far from Santa Monica), we plan to return and definitely will be staying here. Two nice bonuses, we were given free use of a courtesy car yesterday, and free use of bicycles all day today. Thanks for a great experience! read more

My boyfriend and I have stayed at both the hotel and the residences. The first time we got really lucky and they gave us a two bedroom residence because it was the off season. It was amazing--the rooms have little touches that remind me of the Relais Chateaux properties...like good quality shampoos/soaps, chocolate in your room at night, books and magazines, etc. The bedding and towels are all lush and amazing. The front desk staff was great as well, and they provided us transportation back and forth to the ferry and to restaurants. At the hotel we enjoyed the beautiful harbor views and the library that serves port and cheese from 4-7 pm. At the residences, we really enjoyed the free bike rentals. Both are wonderful properties and we will be back very soon I'm sure! read more
