I came to White Buffalo for help finishing a full leg sleeve having had to "break up" with the artist that started it. I was set up with Kehlan as it was in the anime arena style-wise and he was familiar with the subject matter. I feel so lucky to have found a shop here in Sacramento like this one. The environment is comfortable, equipment is state-of-the-art and the service has been amazing. I have a fairly significant amount of body art already so I have a bit of experience working with different artists and Kehlan has outshined them all. He has an extremely gentle touch and his color work is extremely skillful. I am not even exaggerating when I say that there are times where I am almost falling asleep from relaxation, which is not easy to do considering what is happening. There is a real sense of camaraderie between the artists and the conversations are rarely just between Kehlan and me which adds to the comfort level. I hesitate to talk him up too much as his books are already months out generally but he deserves the shout out for his work. Prices are typical for a quality shop. I cant speak to anyone else's schedules as I have only ever worked with Kehlan but I imagine they are all pretty similar. Great shop, great artists. Cannot wait for every future appointment (and there will be plenty). read more

I had a great experience with a previous tattooist a year ago so this time around I went in for a consultation with a different artist Nico at the sac location and it went well so we set a time for me to come back. In the mean time I gave him my email for us to stay in communication . I had a few questions in that couple of week period so I sent him a couple of emails, dmed his personal and shop Instagram, emailed the shop email, called the shop. I got no response from him until the day of my next appointment saying that he never really checks his emails and that his apprentice is in charge of that but they're still working on that.... My tattoo was going to be a couple of thousands of dollars so pretty frustrating that there was no effort in communication until the very last minute. read more

Ryan is the artist who created my beautiful babies on me. He does amazing art, it's hard to put into words how much this tattoo means to me ( except I love it ). Ryan works with confidence and ease, it shows in his art and while tattooing you. His hands are light, which is awesome. Ryan also placed two tiger cubs on me years ago, they are as solid ink work and beautiful today. Whatever you do, do NOT go to Saul Gutierrez. I don't normally write reviews, but my experience with him was so bad, and I know I'm not the only one who he's done this to. I was looking for a larger tattoo (10+"), and I came across his work on social media, so I decided to use him. After a few months of messaging him, I got an appointment through Zoom. All seemed fine -- he said he likes to work with his clients on design, I told him what I was going for and mainly explained that I'm open to any size and I trusted his artistic opinion for design. He was charging $2,500 for tattoos over 10", which I was willing to pay since it seemed like his art was what I was looking for. I sent him examples, but reiterated that I trust whatever he thought would look nice. After this, there are so many messed up/confusing things that happened, I'll put them in bullet points: -We had an appointment set, but two days before, I remembered he said he sets appts. to work with his clients for design. He messaged back cancelling the appointment. I let him know that it's hard for me to get full days off work, so I need him to be sure if we reschedule. -We reschedule for a month later. Again, I message three days before. He says he's busy the next day, but he'll call me the day after. The day after (the day before my appt), it's 8pm and I hadn't heard anything. I message him and he asks me to get on Zoom. It's clear nothing is even thought about with my tattoo because he's taking the examples I sent, and just cutting out the background in a blank Photoshop. I told him again that these were examples and need his expertise on design. He tells me that it's going to be a while to cut out backgrounds, so he'll message me when it's done. -At 10pm, he asks that I get back on Zoom, and he just has them cut out, and is asking where I want them. I tell him I really don't know design, but it's clear on this call that he wants me to tell him exactly where to put things. I'm trying to figure out a way to make it look decent, and literally googling design basics. Well after 11pm, it's finally in a shape, but I have not clue if the colors work together, if the sizes makes sense, and if it will work on a body. I'm asking all these questions on the call, and he says it looks fine. At this point I'm tired and it's clear he doesn't care. -The next day, I arrive to White Buffalo 5 min. before our scheduled time, so I message that I'm there. He tells me he just leaving his house and forgot to go to the store. I go to the coffee shop, wait ~1.5 hours, then he tells me he's there. I go back to the shop, and he tells me to wait in the front for him to set up. About 30 mins in waiting, he has food delivered, so I'm waiting for another 30 for him to eat. I get called back, and he asks that I pick out the colors I want from his ink drawer while he continues to set up. Again, since I have no experience, I have no clue what colors are needed. -A few hours in, I'm trying to ask how long it will be, and he just answers that he can be there all night if needed. After 10 hours of tattooing, we decide to call it because it's 12am. It's well less than half done and I pay half and leave. The next day, I have to call out of work because I feel incredibly sick. I look it up, and find that most artist will only do max 4 hours sessions because it's a lot of trauma for the body to take. This is news to me. -Because the tattoo is partly finished, he asked that I reach out in a couple weeks to finish. I'm trying to get a hold of him for 3 weeks and I truly think he ghosted me. I send him a final message and ask if he just wants to pick it back up in a few months because he seems to have a lot going on. He says no and we get something scheduled. -Now I've had a lot of time with the design, and I HATE looking at it. It has none of my original requests, and it's just a flat blob. I realized that it probably needs some shadows and highlights which didn't show in the picture. I ask to meet with him to get on the same page before he finished and he was onboard with my concerns. Then a week later, he asked to meet, and he was super irate because I wasn't happy with the original design. I was taken aback bc I was just asking for there to be more depth. This was my chance to tell him that original design wasn't good in the 1st place because it was last minute, and I had no clue how to design. I started crying, and that ended our meeting. I now work with another artist, and on our 1st appt, she had broke down how she would correct what's there without me explaining any of this. She took exactly what I was looking for and it's now beautiful. This is all to say, I now know it could've been done, but Saul clearly didn't care. I'm still incredibly confused on all of this and I still think about it all the time. Hopefully I'm saving at least one person from the stress and being gaslit with permanent art on their body. read more

I had very high hopes for this place!!! I checked out there Instagram and website and yelp! And found they do beautiful work!!! As a artist I felt comfortable. Not really caring who I got because everything was amazing! (Oh I was wrong!) So I reached on Instagram and realized this was not the best idea so I sent a email. I got message back fast. They asked what I wanted and sent them styles of what I was looking for. (Not being a tattoo artist I wanted a tattoos artist opinion and style) They told me how much and said they had a opening for the next week. I asked can we push it out a month. Because I had some jobs I need to take care of before. Then I felt like I was ghosted because they never emailed me back. I reached out again saying if I need to come in I would be happy to. They told me I need to wait about a week so the next month opening for booking. I understood a said fine. About a week later they told me booking what open and I made my appointment. But the person I was getting a tattoo from never called me or ask what I wanted. I realized a few day before I was supposed to let him now so I immediately reached out thinking we would talk about design. He let me know he seen it and said he would meet me Friday. Friday the day I go in to wait about 20min. (I was about 20 mins earlier so thinking he was waiting for my time slot before talking.) He walks in and told me give him and few mins. So I waited and filled out a few thing then I when In the back. He took the iPad he gave to fill stuff out and said give him a few mins. He was drawing my tattoo. ( but he was drawing over one of the design i sent.) I said oh I have a design I made to give you a idea. He didn't really look at it and said "oh it is really easy I don't need that." (That was my 1st red flag. I wanted his opinion but not over ride what I want) so I said yes but I want red, white and blue to look smeared. Him "I can't do white." Me " I understand can we do a gray" Him "yes but it will fad over time" Me "can we do a cream color?" Him "not with your skin tone. I can do a pale blue." Me "ok that works" (I felt like he really didn't want to give me what I wanted. To me it looks like he put light blue then shad in with white. Witch he said he couldn't do?) During the tattoo he didn't talk much. Witch i was kinda stuck because I wanted to ask questions but the question I did ask I felt like he was like why didn't you know that. I felt like when a kid asking a common question and the parent rolls there eyes and answer. so I Just watched. I felt like he didn't take what I want in to consideration he did what he wanted. Honestly my tattoo doesn't look anything like what White Buffalo Gallery post honestly you would thought I got it some where else. I am happy with it as a base. But I am going to go somewhere else to get some finish touches. Honestly if he had communicated at all I think I would be happier. (Honestly the stencil looked amazing! My friend and I decided to check this tattoo place out because of the good reviews and photos they had. An artist was sweet enough to take us for a walk in last minute. We did have to wait a little longer than expected but it's understandable. The artist was super nice and chill; she reassured us, made us feel comfortable, and overall just had great customer service. Although this is the case, I am kind of disappointed to how my tattoo came out to look like. We both requested fine line tattoos. I specifically wanted just straight up thin line work for mine. The stencil came out good and placement was agreed upon. Everything was consented. After I continuously checked the results, it was not what i hoped for. The lines appeared more thick than thin and it looks inconsistent (some thin-ish, some areas thick). I'm not sure if i should've specified "dainty fine line" ?? I honestly thought it was a given to know that fine line already meant dainty? Or that fine line is already thin? But what I got was thick line work. I reviewed the artist beforehand and it does look like she has fineline experience , so it just kind of disappointed me that mine didn't come out that way. If you're looking a place in Sacramento to get fine line tattoos done, I wouldn't recommend this shop. read more

I went in today for a Soot Sprite tattoo with Eri and it was a GREAT experience! If I could give 10 stars I would. The shop has a very nice vibe and I felt really comfortable. I had a lot of nerves going in about being a plus size woman and some of the attitudes towards women like me that can pop up in some tattoo shops but I didn't feel any of that here. I had a great experience here last week. I was able to book Ryan a couple months ago and get in earlier on a cancellation which was awesome because he is booked out for awhile for good reason. I chose him because I had been following his work for awhile and appreciated his detail and realism. He worked with me on design ahead of time and then day of took extreme care finding exactly what I wanted and drawing it out. Placement was important to me and he was able to get it exactly how I wanted it placed on my inner forearm. Mine was a six hour session and he was super conscientious about taking breaks and making sure I was comfortable. The end result speaks for itself. Top notch. Great guy. Super clean shop. Went in the other day for the second session on my full back piece. Now this isn't a fresh piece (Quan-Yin woodcarving), but a total revisit to work that had previously been done by a few different artists over the years as I've moved and artists have vanished. A good friend recommended the shop, and I checked out their website to see if I could find an artist that fit the spirit of what I wanted done to my back. That's when I saw Nico's work and knew that was the guy I needed to talk to. Not only was the vibe of the website fitting my dream scenario, but the artist's work just sealed the deal. I had my first session 3 months ago and was immediately impressed with the shop itself. The shop was for sure the cleanest shop I've ever visited (and I've been to more than three dozen shops and have around 25 different tattoos), the staff was incredibly nice and welcoming (not usually the case for a tattoo shop in my experience), and the atmosphere was just inviting and not at all pretentious or aggressive (which is what I often feel at a shop). Nico generally only does grey work, but working with him on the future of my back piece he decided he would work a little outside his comfort zone and incorporate some of the existing color and bring some white into it to really set the piece off. His hand is gentle but the work is solid and such great quality. He knows how to make you feel comfortable, let you know that you're the one calling the shots, but also that he's the professional and he'll get the job done the way you want it if you let him do his thing. About 11 hours into what is probably going to be about 25 total hours or so and I'm happier than i ever thought I would be about my back. I'm honestly happier with what Nico has been doing than I was with the original work. He's taken an amalgamation of ideas and transformed them into a single piece that while not close to being done is already very much a new thing, an incredible piece of art. 11 hours on a table with people walking by watching me get work done and I never once felt uncomfortable or exposed, the vibe of the shop, the staff, and the clients just put me at ease and I felt like I was part of a group that I belonged to while I was there. Listening to the artists I knew that they were all friends and loved what they do and where they do it at. I had found the right shop for this piece to be done. I got to meet one of the owner's for a few minutes on my most recent visit, Elizabeth. She owns the shop with her husband, Ryan, an artist at the shop that I understand is booked out farther than god himself has planned for humanity (okay, might be exaggerating there). Elizabeth was super nice and the staff clearly love her, which says a lot for a business. She chatted with the staff while Nico was getting ready and even spent some time talking to us as Nico outlined his plans for my session. If I hadn't thought this place was perfect before, this exchange would have made it obvious. tl;dr- Super clean shop. Welcoming staff all around. Amazing artists (check their site for examples, I didn't get into it because it speaks for itself). Everyone was professional and I felt like I belonged there. Owners clearly have people working that they care about and appreciate. Looking forward to more sessions on my back and future tattoos with other artists. Was able to snag an opening with Raina who's an artist at this facility. Great communication and amazing tattoo that met all my wants. Healed nicely and without any hiccups. Felt very comfortable throughout the whole process from signing paperwork to the tattoo to the finished project. The place is more low key than other shops I've visited for piercings and other tattoos. I liked that it wasn't busy or too loud or overstimulating at the time I went granted it was during the week and in the morning. The only downside was the parking so get there earlier than you think and plan on moving your car every 2 hours, not the shops problem just an East Sacramento problem. read more

I had a total of 4 sessions done by Ryan for my half sleeve and I must say the experience was above and beyond what I was expecting. I gave Ryan a concept of a scene I was trying to capture with not a lot of clarity and he produced something amazing. I trusted him with a lot of creative freedom for this project and I'm glad I did because I'm obsessed with how my tattoo came out. He's a warm, welcoming, and very professional artist who truly serves his clients and knows his field. The rest of the team at White Buffalo Gallery were also really great to interact with; the way the shop operates is truly special. My tattoo artist was incredibly sweet, took my friend and I in for a last minute session and had overall great hospitality. She made sure we felt comfortable and reassured. The only reason why I am rating this shop two stars is because I am quite disappointed with my tattoo. I had showed her reference photos of the font I had wanted and the font chosen was pretty identical to the references, but when she was finished with the tattoo, it didn't exactly look like the stencil. The font was a lot thicker than what we had agreed upon and the first two words seem bigger than the rest. When reviewing her work previously, I saw that she had done some fine line tattoos in the past and I had thought this would replicate in my tattoo as this is what I initially asked for before even coming into the shop but maybe I didn't clarify it enough. I really don't want to have to leave a bad review but I'm just not satisfied with the work put out. read more

My artist was Saul, and I cannot say enough good things about him. He was so professional and kind from beginning to end, and he's so talented. Me and my sister wanted sister tattoos last minute, and Saul made time for us with custom images hand-drawn in a time crunch. As soon as I saw his drawing I was so excited. He was very light handed and kind and encouraging through the process for both me and my sister. It was such a wonderful experience. The studio is incredible, too. It's a small shop conveniently with a small private parking lot in the back and near coffee shops and eateries so you can greg something to eat before getting your latest work of art. All the artists are exactly that - artists. There's no flash art on the walls, no intimidation, just beautiful, kind artists ready to share their talent with you. I loved how small the shop was. It felt private and casual while feeling a little upscale. You're surrounded by works of art made by the artists, wowing you and assuring you that you made the right choice. I ended up in conversations with all the other artists and their clients, which was a great distraction from the pain and entertaining. My husband plans to go back to get a full sleeve from Nick next year, and I'm already thinking about what I can get next from Saul. I will start by saying that they are really good artists. As someone with ink by Donn Davis, Tim Lehi, Brian Everett, amd Grime, I have a great respect for talented tattoo artists and I think Im familiar with the process. So I went in and made an appointment with John Laurent. i checked out his portfolio beforehand and went in to talk about a full back piece with a nautical theme. ill just be honest and say that before commiting to a 50+ hour full back piece I want to make sure I get along with the artist and theres a level of mutual respect. good thing I did! i paid a deposit (mistake 1) for an appt with John Laurent for a medium sized piece on a Saturday afternoon. i have so many tattoos I want that I figured we could agree on a subject matter (mistake #2) even though he didnt really like the underwater back theme. i thought about it for quite a while and emailed him a couple weeks before the appt to say I wanted a phoenix. i been thru some serious you know what so it seemed fitting, and his online portfolio even has a (not very good) phoenix. but I thought with a couple weeks to work on it he could do a better one this time around. After about three days John emailed me back and said he "Wasnt really stoked to do a phoenix" and "could I please look through these artists he admires for reference and ideas". ouch! I did like he said and looked at all 5 artists he mentioned in the email. they all do almost exclusively skulls, roses, and portraits, all in black and grey (except the roses). Unfortunately I already have a skull tattoo, a rose tattoo, and a portrait, and while everyone needs ONE of these, no one necessarily needs TWO. also most of my work is color and I want more color not black and grey. I still wanted to work with John Laurent though and I had already paid the deposit and I want a fleur de lys cause I was made in New Orleans. so i emailed him back and said not to worry about designing a phoenix, i would just get a black symbol. this enraged John Laurent. He shot me back a fiery email informing me that black tattoos also did not interest him and he would have to cancel the appointment since I "couldnt come up with an idea that suits his style". Wow! so i stopped by the shop and got a refund. It was awkward. i think he could have at least done the flat black symbol since I paid a deposit ad waited 2 months for the appointment. He seemed really angry I had dared to ask for a black symbol. He angrily waved his book of work under my nose and shouted that he "DOES PHOTOREALISM". A lot of the work in his portfolio on the web site absolutely is not photorealism. I told him that some of the work was NOT photorealistic (honestly I think his illustrative work is better and his photorealism is weak). He shouted "PHOTOREALISM, SURREALISM, HYPERREALISM.... ITS ALL THE SAME!" Demonstrating a painful lack of both artistic knowledge and self-awareness. Anyway this is prob quite a long story. Takeaways: John Laurent does not want to work with your ideas and please make sure you want black and grey skulls or photorealism. do not at all costs think his portfolio on the shop website represents what he wants to do. I think he may have needed a Snickers. Lol. read more

After doing thorough research and going over Ryan's artwork, I concluded that I had to have him do my first tattoo! Needless to say his portfolio definitely left me saying "WOW." I wanted my piece to represent who I am, and also something that I'm able to cherish for a lifetime. His versatile creative mind is able to piece out what you envision, while ensuring that everything is fluid and beautiful. The shop is very quaint, the entire atmosphere keeps you comfortable, and more importantly Ryan exceeded all my expectations. Ryan is awesome! And his work is incredibly rich in depth and realistic. I have a few tattoos, two of which were done by Ryan. They're some of the smallest I have but are still my favorites hands down. I still get people telling me I'm bleeding and need a band aid..haha its that real looking! I haven't had anyone else ink that arm ( saving it for the best;) ) Looking forward to getting some more by him. When people ask where I go for tattoos I highly recommend Ryan. Let me tell you about my experience at White Buffalo Gallery. I walked in with a really cool idea, and talked to John Laurent. After speaking with about 6 different tattoo artists that day, I thought FINALLY I found the PERFECT guy to do my tattoo. He didn't just "do" my tattoo. He KILLED it! I recommend contacting John if you want an incredibly detailed tattoo. I think realism is his specialty. I couldn't be happier to wear this work of art. He gave me my own custom design, and made an honest effort to perfect everything I asked him to do. Super humble, and easy artist to work with. Came in a month ago to get my 5th tattoo. I was a walk in so I was worried I wouldn't get it done without an appointment. Luckily Sam was able to see me. I wanted a crown but still wasnt sure on the design. Sam was very help full and patient in creating my crown. We agreed on size and placement and got started. Sam's a pretty awsome artist, he pays attention to detail and makes sure your happy with your tatt. The shop is very nice, clean and features amazing artwork. Came in a second time yesterday. Got a little touch up on the crown and we discussed a background to make it have more character and depth. Trusting in his artistic skills and experience I let him free hand the background and I couldnt be any happier. I love how it turned out. Needless to say Sam Laurent has mad skills!!! I was referred to Natasha by one of my clients and after reviewing her work online i had to make an appointment. after several emails, i skipped a consultation and I was excited for my new tattoo. After getting to the shop she worked with me for about 45 min, fine tuning the details of the tattoo. The tattoo itself took about 2-3 hours but she made sure i was comfortable. I am absolutely blown away by the work that John did on me. I came to him with an idea a while back, and when it came time to get the actual tattoo he was able to put together an image for me that was exactly what I was looking for. When the actual tattoo was finished, it far exceeded any expectation that I had. All the guys there are truly artists who care about their craft, and that comes across clearly in all their work. The shop itself is very clean and covered in awesome art work. It has a really great energy to it that made me feel comfortable enough to relax throughout the 6 hour or so long procedure. I can't recommend this place enough. It's a bit more expensive than some of the other tattoo shops around Sacramento, but you are absolutely getting what you pay for. Wouldn't even consider going anywhere else for any future tattoos, White Buffalo far exceeded my expectations in every way. I can't wait to go back. read more

Kenneth is the man! This shop was amazing. I brought in a few different pictures of what I wanted and Kenneth used his artistic talent to create the perfect tattoo and placement for my body. The shop is incredibly clean and not cluttered, and they remain extremely professional yet friendly. Some tattoo places make you feel uninvited and this was never the case here. The owner and Kenneth were fun to have around during hours of tattooing and the environment couldn't have been better. I do not want to age myself but when I was 18 (10+ years ago) I had gotten two tattoos that at the time I thought were "bad ass". Needless to say I grew up and was really not feeling my cool tatts and wanted to have them covered up. I found out about Ryan through Yelp in May 2014 (he was working at monster ink at the time) and I called to see if he could do a cover up. The first thing he said was you will have to come by for me to see what you want covered before I say yes. I went in and booked with him for January 2015. By January of 2015 he had opened up white buffalo gallery and what an amazing shop!!! The energy there is so chill and it's a clean shop with art all around. Ryan did a great job on my cover up I was amazed because he made my Quetzalcoatl statue look just like the statue I wanted. During my first time there John and Kenneth were doing tattoos on their clients and they were awesome too. I was in awe at how much talent white buffalo gallery has. We are so lucky to have such talented artists in Sacramento. I came to Ryan to do my second cover up and I love it more than the first. Now they won't do all cover ups (my husband has one that couldn't be covered up) and I appreciate them being honest about it. They do charge quite a bit per hour and they usually are booked out but you really are paying talented artists to do permanent art on your body and as to the wait; patience is a virtue and some things are worth waiting for. read more

Nick does awesome work! I'll admit I was a little nervous. All our initial contact was by email and he didn't really ask many questions. I told him what I wanted, paid the $100 deposit and he gave me my appointment. That was it, I didn't hear anything else from him. So showing up to my appointment I was a little worried. What if the design is all wrong? What if I hate his idea? What if I have to make him draw something new and he gets mad? When we met at my first appointment he showed me the design and it was perfect. I don't know how he did it but he figured out exactly what I wanted and the first try. I told him to have fun with the color, I love comic art and street art, that bold graphic color style with heavy contrast. I scheduled two appointments and I told Nick we'd need at least two because I can't sit for more than 2-3 hrs. First appointment we did the outline and that took about 2.5 hrs, second appointment was color, and I don't know how, but Nick got me to sit for 5.5 hrs to finish it. It's beautiful and better than anything I was hoping for. I'm very pleased with his work and would recommend Nick to anyone who's looking to get a vibrantly colored tattoo. I know I'll be bugging him again as soon as I'm ready for my next piece. read more
