This is probably the best fish / Halibut I have eaten. The fish was think and firm, not overly heavy on the batter. The tarter sauce was excellent. The fries were just average good but very acceptable. The portions were large for the price. I'll definitely be back next time I need a fill of fish and chips. Only room for about 20 to eat in mostly tables for two. read more

Stopped by mid afternoon on a frigid December day. The store is a mini grocery shop and restaurant two-in-one. There is a large freezer with a wide assortment of British pies right inside the door. A large counter, washing and cooking area takes up most of the store. 5-6 small tables and a few shelves lined with various imported packaged foods from the British Isles fill in the gaps. Ordered the three pieces of cod with fries combo. The fries were nice golden and crunchy. The fish tasted fresh and had crispy flavorful batter. The highlight of the meal was the tartar sauce. It was rich, creamy, and full of flavors. It was enjoy to dip both the fries and fish in it. If the tartar was homemade, it is a winner. If is a commercial product, I would like to buy a bottle. Going to have a take off a star for the value. I understand that fresh fish can be expensive, but I feel like the value just isn't there. read more

Great little place, kind of hidden away. They have great haggis and chips or black pudding and chips when you want something other than fish. Although their fish is pretty great too! The only draw back, occasionally I find they need to change the deep fry oil more often. read more

Had delivery to our hotel and was quite excited. Haddock was on point as were the mushy peas! Could have used a little more tarter sauce and potentially some vinegar as well. The delivery spoiled the freshness of the fries. Some ketchup would have been nice. Should have asked for some utensils, had to use my hands, London style. Absolutely great fish. Almost everyone in the region has heard of this little fish & chip shop, after it made it into the news saved just in the nick of time from having to close down, I'd even heard of it out in BC but had never had a chance to try it. We were going on a vacation out of town and decided to stop here for lunch, for a nice hearty fish n chip basket in the first leg of what would end up being a 13 hr drive. It's a cute little shop, clean and bright. You walk in and are hit with the smell of fresh fish & chips (clean and tasty, no stale old over-used oil smell like you get in a lot of places). Derek had the 2pc Cod and I had the 2pc Haddock lunch special. There are only a handful of tables but we had the place to ourselves since it was still early. We picked a table along the wall where we could look at the neat treats and souvenirs they have on display. It didn't take long to get the fish and chips even though they're all cooked per order. They arrived crispy but not overcooked and had a nice golden colour to the batter (always a concern - nobody likes rock-hard batter). Both types of fish inside their batter shells were juicy and tender, falling apart easily. The tartar sauce was delicious and uniquely spiced with a freshness that makes me think it was made in-house. All in all, it's a tad out of the way for us here in Calgary but I'd eat there again if we're in the area for sure! read more

Was pretty pumped at the idea of a proper chippy as I'd lived in God's own country (Yorkshire) for a couple years and the idea of a battered sausage and chips made my giant tummy grumble. Whitbies sells not only fish and chips, but other European dishes as well. I ordered Dutch chips with a very nice authentic Dutch mayo and two pieces of haddock. The fish was certainly fresh, but sooooooooo much grease. I won't purport that I know what English fish and chips are supposed to be, so I won't say it was wrong, but I can say that the grease was way too much for me personally. The Dutch chips were very tasty, but very quick to become soggy. If the chips are par fried, then they could use a minute of draining perhaps. Price wise... certainly not for a tight budget. The fish does seem to be fresh and I'm willing to pay for authentic fresh fish. A good number of the other products are frozen. All in all, it is a bit over-priced. My biggest issue was not food related at all. While waiting in line to order, the girl at the til asked to old guy (who was cooking and I think was the owner) a question about something to do with the POS system. From what I gathered, she was looking for a menu item in the computer. He came over and absolutely berated her in front of all the customers waiting. I was very put off by the disrespect by him and felt disrespected myself that he obviously felt customers would be okay with it. For that reason alone I won't be back... just don't feel like supporting a business that doesn't feel it proper to respect its employees (especially in front of its customers) read more

OK. I used to grab fish & chips in England for a cheap meal, 99p in the old days, £2.50 a few years ago. But my son likes his fish & chips so we occasionally go here. But, like another reviewer said, $20 for fish and chips in a fast-food joint? I think you'd be better off crossing the street to Brown's to get your fish & chips at a real restaurant for the same price. read more

We've ordered from here on several occasions. Have always enjoyed the food. Ordered a meal last week that didn't get delivered. Nothing to do with the restaurant - a problem with the delivery service. On their own initiative, the restaurant called us to see if we eventually received our meal. We didn't, but the restaurant made it right. Incredible customer service! read more

Somehow after delivery the fish shows up to your house crispy, warm, and perfectly cooked. Their tarter sauce is delicious. Its just good old classic fish and chips cooked to perfection. Love this place, best place for fish and chips in town by far. read more

The cod is awesome. Went there the other day, had an awesome experience. The prices are fair, if you think they are pricey, just go and buy some fresh cod from the grocery store, you will then understand why the price is the way it is. Being land locked, it takes resources to get fresh cod which raises the price. Cheers to the young lady working the till the day I went. She was so nice and cheerful.
