I would very much recommend the Hood House as a great option when visiting anywhere in the Platt Valley. But wait, when I arrived for my two day stay I found beautiful, nicely waxed wood floors. My dog Rigal will not walk on a slippery floor, not for anything. So it's a little late and no one is around so I figure I will just carry him up the steep, narrow stairs, he thinks otherwise. Three steps up and he wiggles out and I take a few very fast steps back to the landing. Second attempt was a scary ride for both of us but successful. We were in the Saratoga area to photograph fall color so we get up before the sun, and the fire escape looks much less scary in the dark. Rigal was not thrilled but more cooperative then last night. What he, nor I saw was the fact the last five or six feet of steps are not there, it is a fire escape. I just didn't see that one coming. Luckily Rigel took a leap of faith into my arms and we were off to shoot that color. I forgot to mention, Rigel is the most beautiful 105 pound Rhodesian Ridgeback you will ever see! Thank you Carol for understanding and refunding me the second night.

Flash forward three years - not only did we come back but this time, we stayed the entire week! We were so glad we got to experience the latter part of the week at the ranch - inclusive of trapshooting, archery, a day-long mountain ride, and an overnight camp-out! It was really humbling that the wranglers remembered us from our previous visit, too; we really felt a part of their family! Speaking of the staff - they are phenomenal and VERY accommodating! The on-site chef is AMAZING and provides gluten free/vegetarian/etc. options during the buffet-style meals; the wranglers ensure you are comfortable at all times; Lori at the front desk was very responsive via email with my pre-travel questions; and housekeeping made our cabin looking fresh every day. All were very welcoming and friendly. Vee Bar puts together a very well-organized itinerary for the week too. As a planner, I personally love this. They have multiple activities for all activity levels and you're more than welcome to "skip" an activity if you wish. From horseback riding to hiking, they truly have something for everyone, and it's very evident they put a lot of time into creating a well-rounded trip experience. The reason why we chose Vee Bar initially (compared to other dude ranches) was due to its proximity to the Denver Airport. Now, I will gladly continue revisiting due to the GREAT experiences and memories made there. If you're wanting a true western experience, I couldn't recommend Vee Bar enough. The entire property and the beautiful Yampa River running behind the house is an incredibly peaceful environment. The views on the deck at sunset were awesome! We took advantage of the fire pit and enjoyed an evening camp fire under the stars. The farm is close enough to get to the Strawberry Park Hot Springs (They are outside of Steamboat Springs. If you haven't been there yet, we highly recommend the experience!) We enjoyed checking out the shops and history of the nearby small towns of Hayden and Craig. We loved being part of the farm while we were there. We milked our first cow, enjoyed watching the goats and their "kids", and had the bonus of the family's arrival of their piglets. They were so cute! (Darn you delicious bacon!!) The farm to table breakfast was delicious and Rachel is a great cook and host. We'll definitely go back again in another season to see how the farm changes and have another relaxing getaway. But here, there's no hype, just honest-to-goodness amazingness. First of all, there is the utterly unique factor. This house was once in Kansas. Kansas! How did it get here, in the Colorado ski center of Steamboat Springs? That's a good story. And then there are the owners. From Melbourne. In Australia. How are they connected to a Kansas Victorian in Colorado ski country? That's a good story, too. And the amenities. Billiards, anyone? Eggs benedict and granola and house-made apple jelly on freshly baked bread? Sunrises and sunsets worthy of Ansel Adams? The world's coolest third-story game room? Complimentary sunscreen and lip balm in addition to the usual hair and body products? An amazing fireplace, an antique piano, stained glass windows, spiral staircases, a hot tub, heated sidewalks (when it snows ...), an outdoor patio, rooms upon rooms filled with special things, comfy beds and drop-dead gorgeous bathrooms (yes, it's true), and very nice people, too? Oh, it's also in Steamboat Springs. A cool part of Colorado, and not all that Aspeny at all. Sure, it's a ski mecca. But it's got a great Victorian B&B hidden amidst all those cookie-cutter condos and timeshares, too. If this doesn't deserve to be called luxury, then nothing does.

They were by far the cleanest place we have stayed at in the Gould/Walden area and we've been coming up here every summer for 5 years. The hosts are super friendly and took such great care of us. Gerry (with a G) and Millie are quite crafty making purses out of cowboy boots, fur coats, hats, boots, gloves, cell phone cases, clutches and more. The breakfast buffet is served from 7:30-9:00, the website hadn't been updated with the change and said they close breakfast at 10am. We arrived at 9:30 and were quite sad to find the buffet closed, however Gerry and Millie reopened the kitchen and made breakfasts for us! We promised to show up before 9am the next morning and found a buffet of the usual items including several different breads and fruits and breakfast burritos and home made green chili! We came back around 5pm from our adventures and Gerry invited us over to the main building for homemade ice cream! What a treat. Then they shared with us the tools of their trades for the various arts and crafts they produce. Very sweet of them. We stayed in the Bear cabin and it was perfect for 4 of us. It has a queen size bed in a separate bedroom and two twin beds in a loft. The small, but very functional, kitchen included a small fridge, a convection/toaster oven, a microwave, a 2 burner stove and a sink. A great experience... we'll be back next year if not before!

Milly walked us over to our cabin , The Wild Rose, and even found something for us to stabilize our kickstand on our motorcycle. Just a few minutes later, her husband Jerry stopped by to introduce himself. They are very nice people and greats hosts and cooks! Breakfast is included and cooked hot and fresh when you come in. There is also fruit, cereal and pastries. You can add supper to your stay by just letting them know the day before. There is not a menu, this is more of a bed and breakfast situation. Trust me though, the meals will not disappoint. ! Ours was a melt in your mouth steak cooked exactly how we wanted it. Served with bread, salad, potato, corn and cheesecake with fresh peaches! Our cabin was spotless and so comfortable. We enjoyed time on the screened in porch. We saw moose and deer by the pond located just steps from the cabins. They also provide fishing poles if you want to fish their pond. There is so much more to say but I encourage you to check it out on your own. If you are looking for peace, quiet and beauty, this is the place! Please note that our cell service was very spotty. That is actually a relief for us but the main office does offer wifi if you need to be more in touch! You need to visit Milly, Jerry and Toto!
