I was offered the usual drink and magazines, but agree with Michelle T that the junior staff were pretty robotic. I never pay much to have my hair cut, and I consider £50 far too much for a wash and trim, but if you quote 'online 50% off', it's a good deal. I was going to give an 'a-ok' review, but reading Michelle's reminded me that I too got a different haircut to the one I asked for, and that although it worked out well for me, that is not actually a fine way to run a hairdressing business. Because I left with half price snazzy hair I just smiled to myself at the stylist's arrogance, but thinking about it, how dare he make it up as he went along, without consulting me! Also, the receptionist was pretty pushy about trying to make me sign up to a loyalty card, and looked at me as if my refusal (which I had to give 3 times) was weird. I was not impressed that they used my mobile number, given to secure the booking, to subsequently bombard me with marketing texts. So, as long as you are up for a surprise, go here for the 50% off deal. Otherwise, it's just an expensive central London chain, which I suspect is only of any real interest/use to people who work nearby.

The staff are very friendly and Lucy my hairdresser is very good at what she does. They consult with you when you first arrive to what service you want doing and will discuss any changes u want from what u might normally do. You get a pot of tea and biscuits (or any other beverage you fancy) when you first get seated and then your beauty process begins! I'd always been curious about Oskar Pink. I take the Chalk Farm station sometimes, and this place is right across the street from it. The decor looked really cool: funky outlines of different hairdresser's tools painted all over the walls, a clock that was backwards (so when you looked at yourself in the mirror during your cut, it looked correct), etc. So today was a crummy, tiring day and I am meeting my boyfriend's family this weekend, so I thought I'd treat myself to a cut. And a treat it was! I was a walk in, which was no problem at all. I worked with Marzia, who was super friendly and if I was keeping my hair short I'd totally go for her do. I got a great cut. Who knew I looked so cute with bangs? She did a great job giving me a new look while keeping the length I so desperately wanted to maintain -- if you're a girl with superstraight hair that grows ever so slowly, you will know how important this is. And the price, while not cheap, was certainly cheaper than what you expected to pay in other such boutique salons. I've even paid more at Toni and Guy, which wasn't nearly as luxurious an experience. Now with salons, I'm incredibly judgmental, and Oskar Pink sold me on the details. The shampoo session was long and luxurious, no wash-and-go deal here. The place was well lit and well equipped, everything looked clean and professional grade. They totally did not force any products on me (double thumbs up!!) and that was nice. Marzia also did not try to hairdresser-chat me (triple thumbs up!!!). I hate that stuff! What do you do, do you have a boyfriend, where are your from, blah blah blah as if you or I really care, I just want to read my magazine in peace! She was professional through and through - all conversation was about my hair, and she was honest about her opinions while still respecting my tastes. Definitely give Oskar Pink a try. I am SO going back. (OK fine, one minus -- they don't have beauty treatments like waxing, nails, etc. But they do hair really well so it's ok, I forgive them.)

I went to Ella's last night for a manicure and had one of…read morethe worst salon experiences of my life: I would never go again. Firstly, the salon is dirty. The nail area cushions are ripped, there are cracks in the furniture and none of the equipment was cleaned before or after it was used on me. Secondly, I had a dreadful experience with my manicure. I asked the technician if they had shellac and she told me they did but I don't think she had a clue what she was talking about. She sighed when I said I wanted my nails filed round not square, and tutted and rolled her eyes when I changed my mind about the colour I wanted, before any colour had been applied. Also, the quality of polish is low: Barry M and a lot of other tired looking, cheap brands. I don't mind a bit of Barry M at home but it's not what I want when I've asked for shellac! The dryer she had looked like a Barbie one and was as effective as a sparrow yawning on my nails. Added to this, she kept messing up the polish, so taking it off and reapplying. After one hour and 20 minutes of this, I said I had to leave and she tried to charge me £20, even though the sign on the wall said a manicure was £8. When I questioned this she said she's used shellac and when I pointed out that she hadn't used shellac but Barry M, suddenly she couldn't understand what I was talking about. I was so upset by the experience I paid, left, and burst into tears as soon as I walked out the door. Dreadful. My manicure began to peel the same night too. One to avoid.
