When you try a hair salon for the first time, the worse you might expect is leaving with a hairstyle that you don't like that much. You wouldn't expect leaving with a burnt scalp. Well, that's what's happened to me at The Painted Lady.
Last week I booked an appointment for ladies cut, bleach roots and toning with Belinda, the director. The online booking process was easy to complete and I promptly received a confirmation email and later on a reminder. When I arrived at the salon, there was a good atmosphere that made me feel at ease. Belinda herself was lovely. No complaints.
The problem was that the bleaching process had to be repeated as Belinda, as she later admitted, didn't use strong enough bleach (my roots are very dark). The result was not only that I ended up spending more than an hour extra in the salon but, most importantly, the double bleaching process burnt my scalp and the toner couldn't be applied to the top of my head due to burning pain. Belinda had to seek advice from a colleague in order to find a way to colour the top of my head to match the sides and back. All in all it sounded like a mistake more typical of an inexperienced stylist than of someone with the professional background of Belinda. I've been having my hair regularly bleached since December and not once has this happened before.
I really didn't mind the five hours I spent there as all staff were really nice, constantly offering me something to drink. I didn't mind either being asked to move several times as the salon is small and there was a hen party having their make up and nails done - that was part of the quirkiness of the salon. What I found surprisingly unprofessional was, when about to pay, Belinda pointed out that she was only charging me for one bleach service instead of two - 'as the second one had been her fault' -, which I found insulting she even considered the possibility of charging me for the second one. Belinda offered a free toner on my next visit to compensate for the error but I think it would have been more appropriate to offer a reduction on the total cost of this visit (£145).
One day later, I could feel where my scalp had been burnt and I will not be taking advantage of the generous offer of a free toner as, clearly, there will not be a next visit. Such a shame as I loved the place, the atmosphere, and surely I would have become a regular. read more
