I visited Kay and Kompany with extremely high hopes after reading all the great reviews. What I have now learnt however, is that good reviews do not really mean anything. I was specifically very impressed by the look of the balayage photos that Stacey had done on their Instagram page and specifically requested her. However, despite her being a lovely character, she made a complete failure of my hair. The final result was absolutely nothing like I had asked for. I came in and asked for balayage, thinking that my brunette hair would have lovely streaks and blends of a subtle blonde. The job she did was appalling and looked nothing like balayage. It is uneven and looks like a failed dip dye. What is even WORSE is that before the hairdressers had even finished blowdrying my hair - the receptionist came over to me and demanded my payment while I was sitting on the chair! At this point I hadn't even seen the final look or the back of my head and half my hair was still wet. (It was as though they all knew it had gone wrong and may have been worried I wouldn't have paid after seeing the final result). When I got home, I took a proper look at what my new hairstyle looked like and I was so upset. HOW COULD THEY EVEN LET ME LEAVE LIKE THIS! I had spent £159 (THAT'S RIGHT - £159!!) ON THIS (SEE IMAGE). After writing a letter to complain and demand my money back (not even for the trim that I had had, but simply the money I had paid for the colour) I received an email saying that they would NOT issue a refund! (Keep in mind I have paid £159 for this awful colour job) and they said that they do not issue refunds but operate a 7 days guarantee to come back if you do not like your hair. I work throughout the week past their closing time and so would not have been able to come in until the following week! This was TOO LONG to be walking around with this awful hair job after paying so much and they NEVER should have let me leave like this. Kay and Kompany still refuse to offer a refund. When I said I wanted to look like Blake Lively I ACTUALLY meant I wanted to look like her in the face and body, not just the hair, but nevermind. AJ lightly curled and tousled my hair to pretty much exactly match the photo I'd brought him of the hairstyle I wanted for a wedding. I know this seems like a very simple thing to do for a professional but you would not believe the amount of times I've explained what I've wanted to a hairdresser and they've made all the right agreeing noises and then completely failed. I'm always too polite to say anything so pay and leave then go home and sob and try and re-do it...and usually make it worse. I don't like too much curl in my hair as I have such a round face. Seriously. My sister nicknamed me Moonface and it caught on pretty quickly! AJ tousled it just right and I skipped away a happy bunny. Had many-a-compliment that day on my hair. Rip off, they charged me 40 pounds for a trim wich took no more then 8 minutes, badly done. When I told the cashier last time I was there a trim was 25 pounds. She just dismissid me and procced to charge me. Better ask first the price of everything. read more

I had a really lovely experience with my first appointment here for a cut and blow dry with Stacey. Stacey listened to me and gave me a lovely fresh cut and blow dry exactly the way I wanted it. She made me feel at ease as I have alopecia in places but she was great about it and we had a good chat about it. We also had a consultation for a balayage in which we went through different colours together and picked one I was happy with, she answered all of my questions and gave me a quote so I am happy to say I am returning in 2 weeks. Everyone else at the salon was really lovely and friendly and chatty I definitely felt looked after, and looking forward to returning!! read more

I've been waiting to review Kay & Kompany for a while now and I really have had a difficult time putting my disgruntledness into words. This might be a long review, but it's a bit of a story. I wanted to add a bit of fashion colour into my hair (aka: non-natural). Through friends, I had great reviews of the Elumen line of colouring. Not a lot of salons offer it - notably, not my usual salon. So I looked around, read reviews, and decided that I'd try Kay & Kompany. They're nowhere near where I live, but they had real photos of customers on their site (as opposed to just stock images from Redken, Goldwell, etc. ) and seemed to be not horribly priced. I did notice that there were lots of typos and misspellings on their site and that did worry me a bit as to the professionalism of the place, but thought I'd give it a go. I went in for a consultation and allergy test and the stylist, Lauren, decided that my plan of balayage-style painted ends with a few full-length highlights throughout my natural brown (with a bit of grey) would be do-able. A few days later, I returned for the colour appointment. This is where things first got weird. Lauren did the needed lightening and then left me to work on other customers. 2 assistants/juniors were left to add the actual tint to my hair. I noticed that they had added a bit more than just highlights, but what can you do once the paint is on, right? At the end of that day, 5 different people had been a part of the dyeing process - the least of which was the main stylist. While there was a looooot more dye on the top front of my hair than I had requested, it looked nice and I wasn't terribly displeased as the shade was really lovely and bright and I still liked the look. Then I got the bill. My own fault for not reading the small print is that this place CHARGES for a blow dry with a cut or a colour. WHAT? I've never heard of that. Blowouts on their own - of course. But if you've just wet my hair, why on earth are you charging £30 to dry it? But add to that the service was charged as 2 parts, when I'd been under the impression (through what they called in on the confirmed booking) that it was 1 thing, and I was quite shocked. So I ended up paying about double what I thought - and that was even with a Yelp check-in offer. The cost of services here ended up rivaling much fancier West End salons for a far inferior experience. Elumen requires a sealing process, and this, it turns out, was not properly done. For a product that claims to last 4-6 months (and which I've seen do just that on friends), it was nearly gone in some areas after 4 washes. I contacted Ellie (the manager) and she agreed to schedule me in for a complimentary re-dye. This was really good customer service and it the ONLY thing that boosts this review to 2 stars. I returned with high hopes. The re-dyeing appointment was AWKWARD. It was very clear that Lauren was not happy that this had to be done. She looked over my hair and said "we'll have to re-do it all over" by which I presumed she meant all of the dyed areas (as about 1/3 still did look ok). So I smiled and said "have at it!". The first stroke of the dye brush was the entire length right down the back of my head. Think reverse unicorn horn placement. At that point inside my head I was screaming, but outside I just went with it. Because there is no style in which that would look ok with the rest just tinted at the bottom. I probably should've said *something* but really there wasn't anything that could be done to save it, so I went along with it and walked out with a whole head dyed (although not fully to the roots - which was really weird) and thinking my whole plan to have fun end that wouldn't need maintenance had turned into a style that would be really awkward to grow out. The kicker on the day was that they did a rough blow dry - just such that I wouldn't have a wet shirt - and sent me on my way under the guise of "busy-ness" when I was the only person in the salon. So off I went home with wet hair. So strange. It was very clear that this whole process of redoing a mistake was one no one was content to deal with and I felt very much unwelcome the whole time I was there with the exception of the really kind and sweet shampoo girl/general assistant, who seemed to put up with being shouted at and pulled in all directions both times I was there with aplomb. She was a gem (and I wish I could recall her name to fully compliment her professionalism). So. Nearly 4 months on now. The dye was still not sealed fully the second time, but far better than the first. I need a touch up and am currently looking for a better option than Kay & Kompany as I will not be returning. The first instance of not-quite-listening led me to have one chunk of hair overdyed and I could live with that, but to end up with such a different result and to be treated less-than-warmly is just not something that will turn me into a repeat customer. read more

Great hair stylists. Award winning yet again. Always leave very satisfied. I notice a small number of disaffected and it seems to be down to not communicating with Kay and Kompany. I now live in Ireland but try and make it to London for a hair treat at least once a year. read more

Not surprised this salon has just one two awards at the hair and beauty awards at the weekend. I made an appointment a couple of weeks ago as I had become dissatisfied with my current hairdresser. I was absolutely amazed at how I was treated from the minute I walked in the door. A wonderful atmosphere, extremely attentive staff and the best haircut I have had in years. Total nightmare of a salon. There were red flags from the moment I walked in - almost every stylist had stringy, overprocessed, hair. I can't imagine any central London salon allowing their stylists to show up to work looking like that. The salon itself is small and crowded. I was seated at a station and had the hair from the person sitting next to me blown into my face and belongings. They didn't provide hooks for bags, so I had to put my £5000 purse on the dirty floor. It ended up covered in hair and having bleach dripped on it, and the stylist jammed her cart over it. The salon advertises as organic, but none of the styling products they were using were organic. I have an allergic reaction to non-organic products, and not only was I subjected to the products used on others, I had to have my hair blowdried without any products to protect my hair. I ended up spending over 5 hours in the salon, because I was repeatedly left with my head dangling in a sink while the stylist disappeared to mix new chemicals. I can understand central London prices, because they hire assistants for their stylist to mix products, etc. They will also have top equipment to ensure their clients are comfortable. This salon is cramped, has shampoo stations that don't recline, and stylist chairs that don't change height, so that they can't even cut long hair while you're sitting down. After several hours of sitting with no foot rest, having other people's hair and products blown in my face, I was taken to a dirty shampoo station, where I was left while the stylist mixed products. While my head was dangling in the sink, another stylist flicked the alcohol from a comb right into my face into the sink that I was occupying. Forget friendly service, they can't even bother to treat you like a human being. When the stylist finished applying the foils, she told me that the product would need to sit for 30 minutes. Most other salons have a separate station where they'll seat you under a dryer with magazines to make waiting a pleasant experience. This salon just left me to be subjected to their overcrowded dirty salon. Each station was so small that the stylists didn't have their own individual tools and products. Other stylists kept bumping into my seat to reach over and grab items from the station where I was seated. My own stylist had to send someone to hunt for hair clips, and they couldn't even find any. Hair was left in piles in the corner of the salon, shampoo basins were left full of old foils and product. The stylists didn't even know how to properly operate a blowdryer. One woman screamed out while having her hair dried because they burned her ear. The timer for my highlights went off and continued to buzz while my stylist was preoccupied at the receptionist station. The salon didn't have a receptionist, and every time the phone rang, my stylist had to excuse herself in the middle of my service to answer it. I kept trying to catch my stylist's attention, to let her know that it was now ten minutes past the processing time. She finally came over to tell me that she'd get to me in a moment. I was shocked. In my experience with other salons, the stylist will come over several times to check the foils. This stylist not only never bothered to check, but left me past the normal processing time. This put my hair at risk as she had already pulled the bleach through over previously bleached areas. Other salons are careful not to overlap bleach. This salon overlapped and didn't care to check to make sure your hair was okay during the process. After 45 minutes the salon manager had to yell at the stylist to take out my foils. The whole atmosphere was so unprofessional and made me incredibly uncomfortable. After shampooing my hair wasn't even towel dried. The stylist came back and forced a brush through my dripping wet and recently bleached hair, causing it to break. Then she had me stand up while she cut my hair. I had to stand there with my sopping hair dripping into my shoes. The cut was neither careful nor precise. She spent 5 minutes chopping it bluntly after I asked for long layers. My stylists at other salons use Mizutani scissors and carefully graduated my layers. This was a total chop job. The highlights were over processed, and she used color over the bleach without asking my permission or doing a patch test. Rather than dynamic highlights, I left the salon with hair that looked like a flat single process and it will grow out with noticeable roots. I had a horrible reaction to the color chemicals, and have an inflamed scalp, along with a stiff neck, canckles, ruined purse, fried hair, and a bill that was not only more expensive than central london salons, but significantly more than what was quoted to me in their confirmation email. In keeping with their standard customer service, the manager argued with me that they didn't need to honor the quoted price. Just a very disappointing, tacky, overpriced experience. read more

From the moment I walked in the door, I experienced the professionalism of all the staff, they make you feel welcome, relax and at home. Robina did an amazing job with my hair, she did the highlights the first time and even my husband noticed the change; she also did my roots and an amazing conditioning treatment - my hair looks so shinny and is very soft! Just started using this salon after I moved to London when I was looking for someone who carries Goldwell colour, a premium brand. They are close to Muswell Hill. The service is brilliant: fair price, really take time to listen and explore what you're after (and not afraid to guide you with advice) and skilled with newest techniques. I got cut, colour and balayage and was perfect, more than what I wanted. Most have trained for years at top salons. Very friendly, great atmosphere and I recommend the bikini wax with they beautician too. read more

I went in for a hair extension consultation with Stacey who said she was trained in nano beads. She put one in for me and told me about the process. The tester strand she put in for me happened to match my hair and after looking at the colour swatches we agreed to go with that colour plus a few lighter ones to add some depth. I went back to have them fitted. My hair was washed and then rough dried. I wondered why my hair wasn't blow dried properly to match the smoothness of the extensions but as this was my first time and she was trained, I thought she knew what she was doing. As she put in the extensions I noticed they were much darker than the ones we ordered. Stacey claimed that that was the colour we chose and I pointed out the tester strand that was still in my hair and said it should have been that colour. She then said 'oh don't worry there will only be about 25 dark ones, and the rest are lighter'. It was the total opposite so I do not know why she lied about it, as when she was finished, my hair was a totally different colour to the extensions. Because I was leaving the next morning I really had no time to order more hair and get it re-done. She said that the hair can be coloured and then it would match my hair better so i decided I had no choice but to sort it out once I was abroad. Because my hair was rough dried, there was absolutely no blending and the colour difference was even more obvious. A manager advised her to colour the ends of my hair to match the colour of the extensions, so we did that. Then the manager cut bits of my own hair to try to make it blend better. I also heard her say to Stacey that she had not placed them in in straight rows and that they went too far up to my parting but because of the bad blending Stacey claimed it had to be that high. As soon as I got abroad I went to my regular hairdresser that I use there and she put some low lights in. Once washed out the hairdresser was in shock because my hair has taken the dye perfectly but the extensions did not and she immediately said they couldn't be real hair because they did not colour properly. In the first three weeks 20 of the strands fell out... I am very weary of my hair and I was as gentle as ever when washing, styling and brushing it with tangle teaser. So for 20 to fall out just shows how poorly placed they were. A week later I start to notice that where the beads are, a lot of my natural hair had come away from the root. I knew that we lose 50-100 hairs a day so thought it must be that. After more fell out I went to another hairdresser to get them removed immediately. She actually gasped and kept telling me that the extensions were not straight, there were random patches where no extensions were applied, they were not on 'rotation' where a row is placed in and then a row of hair is left free which will then be rotated during maintenance. She also said that the single hairs the nano rings were clipped to were pulled from different directions so the weight caused the outer ones to break first and then the rest of my hair that it was attached to also ripped out. I have lost 70% of my own hair and my hair right now is horrifically thin and non existant after only 5 weeks! Even though the extensions were badly fitted, I am more upset about the bad treatment and mistakes Kay&Kompany's employee made. Even down to when I asked what shampoo to use, she said 'any! Just use your regular stuff'. Every trained professional knows that shampoos need to contain NO sulphates and NO silicone, yet she was just telling me to use exactly that. Luckily I had already purchased the correct ones. After complaining, she once again lied and said she advised me properly. This did not happen and I have no idea how one can lie so much. In short: wrong colour match, being lied to about colour, poor blending, extensions put in wonky, cutting and dying natural hair to cover up the mess, wrong advice, having to pay another hair dresser to colour correct it, hair doesn't actually dye anyway, 20+ strands falling out and finally hair loss. After asking for a refund they refused and then TRIED TO BLAME ME! They kept saying I should have gone back to them even though they do not understand the concept of being abroad actually prevents that. They took no responsibility and even put my photos on their facebook page trying to sell their services (which i did not consent to). They will most certainly reply to this review with more polite excuses and trying to blame everyone but themselves, they even refuse to admit that they ordered the wrong colour even though I had the original swatch with me! Do not be fooled by the lies that they will respond with and never use them if you value your hair. read more

I am not getting paid for this, nor am I connected to the Salon in any way, other than as a customer. Today, I had such a good experience that I decided to provide a review and I was shocked that Yelp were showing only 3 reviews, 2 of which were very long and extremely critical. I've been coming to Kay and Ko for several years now, and I have always been treated with the greatest kindness and consideration. I have never seen the salon looking dirty, and although it may be busy, the hairdressers never neglect me. Clearly, as the hairdressers are qualified in the latest techniques, they enjoy turning the dullest, most neglected hair into astonishing, ultra-fashionable styles. However, I'm 76 and prefer a very simple, short, easy-to-care-for haircut - but I am still given great care, and as much time as anyone else. Today, I was under great stress and had missed my lunch, but immediately, Stacey sent out for sandwich, and I was brought a reviving cup of tea, and once I'd recovered, Stacey took time to cut my hair exactly as I asked, and by the time I was leaving, I was calm and happy. This Salon does more than cut hair - it really cares about its clients. read more

Earlier this year I went travelling for a few months returning back to the UK with amazingly silky and string hair. As August approached us I decided to experiement with some colourig of my hair including usign bleach; I found my hair lost all its shine and was very dry and looked flat. I visited Kay and Kompany to have my waxing done and asked one of the girls what they could do with my hair. They explained and recommended me this new treatment, Olaplex, so I booked in for it. As usual I was warmly welcomed by the receptionist on a busy, buzzy afternoon. After being taken to my section one of the stylists Stacey talked me through the olaplex treatment again and started the treatment. Stacey applied the treatment leaving me with my stack of magazines and cappuccino to relax. After the treatment was washed out I had the most amazing wash and head massage from Hatti; I always ask for her as she has the most amazing touch and a sweet, funny girl. Ellie then gave me my usual cut and blow dry revealing my new treated hair; I was elated with the results. My hair felt silky, shiny and strong, like heaven had come down and kissed my hair. Now I know how all the celebs get that perfect shine, I felt fantastic. Stacey returned to educate me on how to maintain my hair and ensure I was happy with the treatment. My hair feels like its back to its virgin state and I can't feel any trace of damage from previous colouring. I highly recommend the olaplex whether just for a treatment or whilst you're colouring your hair, add it to the mixture for that celeb looking shine. Thank you so much ladies, you've made my year!
