A Cautionary Review from a U.S. Marine Corps Veteran…read more I served in the United States Marine Corps for 7 years, from August 2013 to August 2020, as an 0331 Machine Gunner stationed at Camp Lejeune, NC, and finished my active-duty career as a Drill Instructor at MCRD Parris Island, SC. During my time as a Drill Instructor, I received a Non-Judicial Punishment (NJP) for violating a recruit training order -- a mistake I take full responsibility for, but also one that many in the military community would recognize as not career-ending. As I approached the end of my service, I was referred to Monarch Roofing by a trusted friend who worked there. I applied, went through three rounds of interviews, and felt excited about the opportunity to transition into civilian life with a steady, reputable job. Things looked promising -- until I submitted my DD-214 discharge paperwork. Within a week of my discharge, Monarch Roofing denied my employment with no clear explanation, only stating: "After much consideration and discussion with the team." No feedback. No conversation. No opportunity for clarification or redirection. This wasn't just a job rejection -- it was a devastating blow during one of the most vulnerable periods of my life. The transition from military to civilian life is already challenging. That one decision sent me into a deep spiral of depression, and had it not been for my incredibly supportive wife and an old high school coach, I honestly don't know where I'd be today. What makes this experience harder to digest is that Monarch Roofing publicly advertises its "support" for veterans -- sponsoring veteran initiatives and even giving away roofs to disabled vets. And yet, when it came to offering meaningful employment support to a qualified veteran ready to work, they turned their back without a word. It's been nearly five years since this happened. Since then, I've become a father, earned a bachelor's degree in business, and fostered over a dozen children in our home. I've rebuilt my life -- but the emotional weight of this experience still lingers every time I see Monarch Roofing's veteran marketing campaigns. I'm not writing this review out of bitterness or with any expectation of gain. I'm writing this for closure -- and in hopes that Monarch Roofing leadership, especially those who are veterans themselves, take this perspective seriously. If you claim to support veterans, that support should extend to real opportunities -- not just marketing efforts. If you're a transitioning veteran considering Monarch Roofing for employment, I encourage you to ask the tough questions and advocate for yourself. And if you're a company decision-maker reading this, I hope my experience encourages you to offer more transparency and humanity during a veteran's most critical career transition.
