Visiting from Sarasota and stopped in for lunch. Had a nice patio that was dog friendly so we sat outside. Two of us ordered the jalapeño cheddar burger. It was a bit dry and had Mayo on it which I hate. I had to switch buns with my mom. Got a Sadie of ranch which helped. Needed more cheese and more jalapeños. They used shredded cheese which was weird, instead of sliced cheese. Fries were delicious and crispy. The Philly cheesesteak was very good. The onion rings were breaded in a corn dog batter. So good! Service was a No ! Will never return. After waiting outside for 30 mins until open. Given menus with breakfast and lunch. Tried to order breakfast told no breakfast asked for coffee told no coffee. Wheelers Cafe has been serving up homestyle meals in Arcadia since 1929. They are well known for their pies, the most famous is the chocolate peanut butter. I was in between visiting antique stores and meeting my daughter so I stopped in for some pie and coffee to kill the time. The interior is rustic but not without its charm. I am not a fan of peanut butter so I went with the blueberry pie. The peanut butter certainly is popular however. While I was enjoying my pie some campers came from the Peace River to get four of the peanut butter pies to take back to camp with them. My large slice of pie was loaded with sweet juicy blueberries and a sugary crust. Best of all pie and coffee was only $5.50. The only thing I didn't care for were the restrooms located outside behind the building. You have to get s key from them in order to use it.I have been in outhouses that smelled better. That pie though was heavenly. Just try not to have to use their bathroom. read more

I got THE STARE when I first walked in.... here we go again.... dread visiting these small towns. The regulars have never seen an Asian, felt like I had 2 heads. Not much competition around. This small, old diner is quaint but the prices are surprisingly high for what you get. Food is nothing special. Just the fact that the restroom is OUTSIDE, around the back will tell you what you should expect. I wondered as I sat and looked around, whether the Health Dept has ever been here. This is your typical small town family owned diner. Located on a side street off the main drag in the downtown area, this no frills place has been serving up the basic diner food for generations. Red vinyl chairs and booths and a linoleum floor that hasn't been waxed in years are clues that this place is for real. Side dishes inlclude such country favorites as collard greens, fried okra, fried cabbage, and mashed potatoes. Sandwiches, burgers, and dinners are available throughout the day. There is an ample list of pies and the signs say the peanut butter pie is to die for. I couldn't resist and now I agree. Came for a Philly cheesesteak and it was absolutely delicious !!! Soft and perfectly toasted bread and the fried okra was crispy and juicy inside! The chicken tenders were perfectly cooked and the Rueben had my son closing his eyes every bite to savor the flavor! All in all I would recommend this place and I will go again French toast was okay (something I would make at home) they have fake syrup witch I do not care foe but for the price I was happy. Really gross. Ordered an omelette, nothing complicated. The omelette arrived on a white plate swimming in brown speckled grease. The bottom of the omellete had black crispy bits from the grill. It tasted like a dirty grill and rancid grease. Nothing nostalgic about a dirty restaraunt. Don't risk it. read more

I had the Mullet dinner for lunch, and I was not impressed at all. It had many small almost invisible but sharp bones in it and it tasted very "fishy". I had smoked mullet many times as a child growing up in Florida and I loved it then. Wheelers is an old time cafe, and there is nothing wrong with that, but since seating is very limited, I got the impression that they wanted me to hurry up and eat & leave so someone else could have my seat. Perfect small-town diner. We stopped by for a late lunch on our way home from a trip. We both had meatloaf with mashed potatoes, cornbread, and deep-fried corn (not breaded, just cooked in a deep fryer. Shut up and try it; it's awesome.) Arcadia is a town that seems to teeter on the edge of trendy, and I hope it doesn't get too trendy, because it would be a shame to see a place like this go away. The waitress was friendly but not so much so that she annoyed us, the food was simple and good and not over seasoned or over presented. I would define it as "good food" and leave it at that. This food is not going to set the world on fire, but it's damn tasty and gets the job done. Don't pass it up if you're in the area; it's worth the stop. We did not have any of the pies, which I already regret, but if you do want pie, I'd suggest deciding before you finish eating because we watched them run out of certain slices as people ordered. Very local joint cafe in Arcadia. If you are antique-ing this place might be the place to fill up on some grub. The food was mediocre at best. Ordered a BLT which was good but the fries were undercooked and still pale and firm. Small portions but we will just call it portion control for once in my life. 2 BLTs and a drink = $15.00. The service was not so good - I was the only table by the time my order was taken. Waited about 10 minutes and listened to the waitress answer phones and watch her write out the specials on the special board. Wheeler's is a small town diner. Other than the gravy being too dry, all the dishes were up to diner standards. If you're in Arcadia I recommend searching for Wheelers and as always worth searching out is 4 stars. It just so happens Wheeler's is worth the search not because they were great but, rather the competing restaurants were atrocious. I had a piece of the world famous peanut butter pie. Wheeler's takes a competent piece of chocolate or vanilla cream pie with, per the waitress, a secret recipe of peanut butter infused granulated sugar sprinkled over the meringue top. Went to this restaurant after it was highly recommended. It is on the small side about 12-14 tables. After waiting 30 min for a table at 1:30 p.m. on a Saturday afternoon, we were seated in the hot sauna of a restaurant as it had to have been 80 degrees in the restaurant. I was there with my husband, 2 daughters and my parents. We ordered drinks and since we ordered coke, the can came sliding across the table at us. We were offered some ice which we received promptly. Then we waited for about 15 minutes for someone to come and take our order. No one came. My mother got up to ask the employee at the register if someone could take our order. They all acted shocked that our order hadn't been taken. When the girl came over to take the order, she complained "It wasn't her job but she would so it anyway". So now we wait for the food and wait and wait. My parents food came out several minutes before the rest of us. Would have been nice to have the kids food come out first since all they ordered was a lousy grilled cheese and a hot dog. Once the food arrived in 3 stages, no one EVER came back to ask us if we needed anything, refill drinks etc. We sure did get the bill right away!! My husband asked an employee in passing for more iced tea and she in a moment and never returned. Another waitress did eventually get it for us and the girl we had originally asked never thought twice about it. The food was fair. Not what I had envisioned since everyone seems to rave about it. The ketchup was empty on the table and a girl was refilling them as a result of us handing her ours to fill. You would think she would have brought it back over to us. NOT! So, I asked the waitress for ketchup, I got 6 packets. Are you kidding me? In addition, we were unlucky enough to sit by the kitchen and all the behind the scenes happenings and heard the waitress' complaining about someone coming in to sit at the counter because the customer didn't know there was a wait list for there as well. Probably because of the poor communication offered by the staff. All I can say is they are lucky my husband went up to pay the bill, because that is the only way this staff would have received a tip. This restaurant is NOT all that it is cracked up to be. A better restaurant I have gone to and wished I had gone back except they were packed as well is The Oak Street Deli. I was very disappointed and the other reviews here obviously haven't eaten at a "real" restaurant. Will not be back. And yes, I am calling the restaurant to make them aware of the horrible experience and why I will not be returning and why I am telling everyone I know how horrible the service was and is. This place is an Arcadia institution and it's been a long time since I had eaten here. If you ever want to know what an old-school diner from the south Florida of a hundred years ago, give this place a try. My mother is retirement age and she used to go here when she was a little girl and it had been around awhile then. As stated in another review, this place was originally called "Fiegler's Goody Café". Mr. Fiegler married a Ms. Wheeler and after Mr. Fiegler died, the name was changed to "Wheeler's Goody Café" and then after awhile, just "Wheelers" (if memory serves...I could be wrong about ths part). After Mrs. Wheeler retired, her family ran the place for a long time. They cashed out in the early 1990s and has been under different ownership although they have kept the "Wheeler's" name on the place. Mostly they just have good old country food here and you can still get things like collard greens and peanut butter pie. I hear the latter is quite good although I haven't had chance to try that yet myself. I hear their meatloaf is pretty good too.
