The Prestwick Pioneer is blazing a trail when it comes to decent pub food in Prestwick…read more Wetherspoons could easily hold this place up as a flagship venue where the focus is definitely on the eating. If you know the Wetherspoons brand you'll know that they pride themselves on well kept cask ales, ciders and other branded alcoholic beverages at unbelievably low prices. Continental cafe-bar in style, the decor is definitely a step upmarket for the brand. Our visit coincided with one of the hottest days of summer but the efficient air conditioning and the floor to ceiling opening windows made it a comfortable place to chill out and eat lunch. I had a vegetarian curry with coconut cream, two papadums, naan bread, mango chutney AND a pint of west country cider for the princely sum of £6.99. What a bargain. I'll definitely check out curry club Thursdays next time I'm in Prestwick. Big thumbs up too for a menu that helps those with dietary requirements choose what to eat, and also makes sure that there is plenty of choice. Stunning value, and an exceptional Wetherspoons. Follow the crowd! PS they have won awards for the loos, and I can see why. They aren't just clean, they are pretty groovy too.

I really thought there wasn't a single free table but at last I spotted one a table for two, just what we needed! As it was so crowded I thought there would be a long wait for food but not so. In fact we were amazed at how quickly it arrived. Everything was, as usual in this Wetherspoon chain, quite delicious and very good value for money. In our book that's a great combination! The bar staff were helpful and pleasant. We won't hesitate to call in there again when we're in Prestwick. The pub opened only this year and is named after David McIntyre, one of Scotland's leading aviation pioneers. He and the Marquis of Clydesdale established a flying school at Prestwick in 1933, which became an important training centre for RAF pilots in the second world war. McIntyre was also involved in the development of Prestwick into an international airport. There are many photos and old advertisements relating to the history of the area, including Woolworths, whose store used to be in this location.

I myself left the Met Police and moved back to Troon when she was widowed in 2016. In 2018 I attended the venue with my fiancée to be greeted by Mr James Welsh with whom I thought I had an excellent relationship. However, on this occasion he was very sarcastic to us , suggesting we were strangers because we had not been in for a wee while. "Hi, I'm James and I'm pleased to be able to serve you tonight etc" There was a bloke sat at the bar who was clearly worse for wear and he started being rude to us and asked me to step outside!!! I refused to do so but this guy Raymond, was determined to spoil our evening. I stepped out and told him to stop being ridiculous and there was no reason for him to do what he was doing. Upon sorting that out without any trouble, James told me and Venetia not to bother coming back!!! We had done nothing wrong I emphasise. It just appeared to both of us James was annoyed with us as we lived at the top of Welbeck Crescent which is not adjacent to McKays by any means. We of course complied with the request. Having met James frequently in Troon since, he has been nothing but very pleasant to us . I assumed all of this nastiness of that evening was well done and forgotten about! I attended the pub about 2 weeks ago after having no issues when in with Venetia 2 days before. The barmaid refused to serve me and , in front of all the guests brusquely dismissed me like a common criminal. I contacted Greene King who assured me my attempts to help smooth out which was a very minor problem 6 years ago, would be resolved and the current management would be pleased to discuss the situation with me . Apparently, Venetia is welcome but not me which appears to be rather discriminatory as well. She was every bit as involved in the unsavoury incident as me?? Anyway, I'm simply trying to resolve a misunderstanding. There is absolutely nothing to be concerned about, as I'm a god fearing Christian man who simply wants a quiet pint now and again as my mother is wheelchair bound now and loves the garden there. Please could somebody contact me and I'm certain this can be resolved quickly and we can all be friends again? Kindest regards and thank you for taking the time to read this polite request. God bless. Donald and Venetia Orr T 07463695500

But they have a reasonable selection of other ales and if I lived in Troon I could see this becoming a popular haunt. Both time I've visited here it has been early in the evening and it's been pretty quiet, allowing us to have a conversation. The main pub isn't huge, but the space is split into a few different areas to inhabit so it's easy to find a quiet corner, and there's no loud music to inhibit conversation. The barkeep was friendly and chatty and remembered me from my previous visit a few weeks previously, which was nice. Thumbs up from me.
