My first impression was positive and really felt like I found a shop that I can rely on in the future. I went in for an oil change at the end of February with my personal oil and Tom was very nice and helped me out with no issues. Here we are at the beginning of may and in the middle of nowhere I get the "low oil level" light. I open the hood and I notice that I have a leak coming from under the oil filter ( I suspect overtightening of the filter ). I know that there is some oil left in my trunk from my previous visit and find out that my oil was sealed and never touched. So what did they use in my car ? I call the service center to explain my frustration and Tom tells me "Congratulations". Congratulations for me getting free oil from them and what do you want me to do about it attitude. VERY UNPROFESSIONAL. I never asked for your oil, I certainly never asked for your oil additives either ( even though I was charged for it ) and was never asked if it's ok with me to have it added in my engine. My fault for not checking everything as soon as I left. I was fooled by the positive reviews. I know human errors happen all the time. But you cannot tell your customer who is stranded on the edge of the road "Congratulations". Even though there is no coincidence my oil started leaking after our visit, I will not step foot in your place ever again. There is a plethora of mobile mechanics and shops ready to take my money. Don't forget that you represent a business and need to be courteous to your patrons. After my girlfriend had an oil change shop suggest new spark plugs and an engine air filter, I decided to search for a shop specializing in Volkswagen. Much to my delight, I found a shop really close to her house. I called for a quote, took the car in the next day, and the maintenance was complete within a couple of hours. The customer service was great and we had new brake fluid and windshield wipers installed with the spark plugs and air filter. The air filter, spark plugs, windshield wipers, and brake fluid ended up costing about $50 less than what the oil change shop initially quoted my girlfriend for just the spark plugs and air filter. We'll definitely return to Wheaton Service Center for future repairs and maintenance! read more

I always think that Yelp is good for the extremes - the good and bad. I'll add my voice to the chorus singing Wheaton Service Center's praises. My knowledge of cars is similar to my parents knowledge of computers -- they're magical machines that do incredible things and are totally beyond comprehension. Mechanics can be terrifying because (for many people) the knowledge gap is so wide its impossible to know what is right and what is bs (asymmetric information right?) So when my 1999 VW Passat battery died and wouldn't revive after a jumptsart, the towing company advised I take my car to a VW Dealer in Bethesda (Marten's -- don't go). After quoting me $1400 to change a part I suspected (after much internet research, the great equalizer!) was not broke, I called up the Wheaton Service Center and spoke to Tom. Not only did they offer to fix the same part for 1/2 as much, but when I did take my car into the shop, they found that the part was totally fine, and in fact, just needed to be re-aligned. Total cost? $42.50. I had a number of other repairs that needed to be completed and Tom walked through the price for each one, detailing what it was, what it did, how much it cost to replace, and the potential risks for foregoing the repair. (If you've ever read Malcom Gladwell's The Tipping Point, Tom so reminded me of a"maven" -- a trusted expert in a given field who genuinely loves teaching other people about their craft). In short, mechanics are hard to find. Honest mechanics are even harder to find. I gotta give these guys some more props. I recently had to get my car towed after hours after hitting a curb avoiding a rogue deer (stag! You shoulda seem him, he was massive). The gates were closed, so the tow truck just left my car on the street outside. These guys blew up a spare tire so they could tow it into their lot, then let it sit there while insurance came and did all the appraising and whatnot. After GEICO declared it totaled (sigh...), they were super nice and sympathetic when I came to clear the stuff out of my car, asking me if I was okay, etc. Really genuine and helpful. Ryan said he hoped we end up finding a VW replacement car just so we could keep coming here. They are awesome. read more

I came to this service center scared from an awful experience at the VW Dealership in Alexandria. They tried to charge me over $3,5k for repairs on my Beetle. Confused and not knowing what to believe, a friend recommended me to come to Wheaton Service Center. I am a VW Driver. As in when Volkswagen says "Drivers Wanted" in their ads, they're talking about lusting after me. And the feeling is mutual. I've been driving for 14 years, and all three of my cars have been VWs. (1 lease, 1 that got totalled after someone hit me and the car saved my life, and my current Passat.) I have had mediocre experiences at best with most dealerships who try to upsell or lie about work that doesn't actually need to be done. I found one decent VW shop in California, where I lived a few years ago during college. Then my cousin recommended Wheaton Service Center when I got back home...and they take care of my car as if they love it as much as I do. Again, my '99 Passat saved my life. I have an '04 Passat, which I LOVE. And I think Tom and Wee might love my car as much as I do. I've brought my VW in for oil changes. Jiffy Lube has broken my under-body cover twice during oil changes. Wheaton SC takes perfect care of my car. I've had body work done with Wheaton, which was finished flawlessly. I've had maintenance done for CV boots and joints...Wheaton never insisted on selling me a new CV joint when they were in good shape (dealerships and even the VW shop I liked in Cali upsold that). And recently I had a bunch of issues, from the AC vent motors to the alternator that went bad. My dad took it to a close friend first to check it out, and the friend was stumped. Then I took my baby Passat to Wheaton SC, and a couple days later it was as good as ever. They're a small shop, so you need to call first to schedule major repairs...but they have always been quick and communicative with me. They finish when they say they will, they don't go over estimated costs for work you ask them to do, and they never charge for work you don't agree to. Honest. Capable. Careful. Caring. And friendly! Basically, I can't say enough about how impressed and happy I've been with Tom and Wee at Wheaton Service Center. VWs can be expensive to own and maintain...but when you know you're getting a good value for repairs and service, it's a great thing. I love my car, and thanks to Wheaton Service Center I can count on it being a long-time relationship...my VWs have taken great care of me, and Wheaton Service Center takes even better care of my VW. read more

It seems impossible to find a trustworthy and competent mechanic, but after years of living in the DC, I finally found my people at Wheaton Service Center. I found recommendations for this shop on a few other websites devoted to Volkswagens and their care. I was able to get my Jetta into the shop within a few days of my initial request for an appointment. They did a great job of changing the brakes, taking care of my long-overdue maintenance and even let me know about a possible repair that is still under warranty and should be handled at the dealership. Communication was a constant and so was friendliness. They service only Volkswagens. I said I'd never got another VW when mine dies, but with such great people who can now take care of my car, I may be inclined to buy another one day. read more

Fantastic service! Tom is the VW (and Audi) whisperer. He and the team have helped me out dozens of times with my aging VW over the years. They are priced fairly, and more importantly they do excellent work, going above and beyond the manufacturer's recommendations. For example: the lock tumbler for my rear hatch stopped hatch lock stopped working. The factory recommended repair is to replace the lock mechanism. This would require replacing all the locks and re-keying the entire vehicle, costing thousands. Tom had the brilliant and tedious solution to buy a new hatch lock tumbler, disassemble both the new and old ones, then rebuild the new tumbler with the old lock pins so I could use my existing keys. This is just one of many times they've helped me out in a jam. Anything from an oil change to an engine rebuild - give them a call. Best autoshop I've ever been to, by far. read more

I wish we'd had a similarly great experience as the majority of the other reviewers, but we didn't. A few weeks ago, we took our VW to them because the front wheels were making a "roaring" noise. I asked them to check the wheel bearings. They did (or at least said they did) and I was told that the wheel bearings were fine, but that the car needed new tires. We changed the tires for several hundred $ (at a different shop), although the old tires still had enough thread for a while. The car came back from the shop and the roaring noise was still there. So I took it to a VW dealership to check it out and was told that the front wheel bearings needed to be changed (surprise, surprise.....). We had it done this week (at a cost of over $1,000) and the car now rolls quietly. Bottom line: I wasted a lot of time and several thousand miles worth of tire thread thanks to the Wheaton Service Center's inability to diagnose something so simple as wheel bearings. Too bad, because I was really hoping that there was an alternative to the VW dealership that charges you an arm and a leg for every little thing. read more

Well, it's obvious from the reviews here, WE ALL LOVE TOM!!! The *must go* shop for VW owners in the DC area. Been dealing with WSC for almost 30 years. First, when I was in my mid 20s and had an '81 2-door Rabbit and Craig was running the shop and his mom was running the counter and they were feeding about two dozen stray cats. What I really loved about WSC is that they were -- and are -- a no bullshit zone. I was told for years to replace a motor mount on my Rabbit but was also told that essentially nothing bad would happen if I didn't so I, being young and penniless, didn't. Had a baby and gave the Rabbit to my sister and moved on to a Mazda for about eight or nine years before it bit the dust. Then I bought a 2003 Passat with an 8-year extended warranty with a disappearing deductible from Martens which means I didn't deal with WSC for almost 20 years. Occasionally, when I had a repair due at Martens that wasn't covered by warranty, I would check in with WSC to see if what I was being told I needed to have done sounded legitimate...and would speak with a nice-sounding person on the phone who always spent lots of time answering my lengthy questions. That very nice person turned out to be Tom Doyle. As soon as my car was off warranty I started using WSC again. Let me say this -- I could walk to Martens's (now Ourisman) VW service off Butler Road in Bethesda if I had to. Now I drive the half hour or so it takes to get to Wheaton and deal with a certain level of inconvenience to work with WSC. I actually never had any particular complaints about Martens, I think they did a pretty good job, but thought I'd go back to WSC which I believe is now the only independent shop left in town that specializes in Volkswagen. There used to be a place called Rainer's in Hyattsville which is apparently gone. Now I am in my early 50s, have a 20-year-old daughter, and I enjoy the continuity of patronizing this shop with this legacy, and which has been in this location probably a good decade or two before I started patronizing them. As far as I know, Tom doesn't work on the cars (although he uses the shop to tinker with his Audis), but he is highly knowledgeable, highly patient, and appears to be extremely honest. When I was at Ourisman getting a headlight replaced and realigned (WSC can't do a few things, like aligning headlights), and Ourisman told me I needed to replace the battery, I called Tom to see if WSC wanted to do the work and he told me that I might as well have Ourisman do it because WSC wouldn't be able to beat the price. Whenever I see Tom behind the counter, with his headset and unflappable demeanor, he seems to be the embodiment of calm. I've never seen him get irate although I'm sure he's had plenty of customers push his buttons. He never rushes anyone on a call and spends as much time as needed to answer any and all questions. My 2003 Passat is still going strong, thanks to WSC, and I intend to drive it into the ground. read more

I've been going here for the past ~6 months, ~10,000 miles, and am pleased to have found a VW mechanic trustworthy, reliable, and reasonably priced. Tom seems to have been there forever, and proudly states that his newest car is a 1987 Jetta. I took my car there after a suspiciously expensive ($600) estimate to fix an elusive check engine (MIL) light on the dash. Tom explained exactly what was wrong (messed up emissions sensor), reset the MIL light, and everything works fine. Tom has given me incredibly detailed explanations of different problems my car has had, and also has told me of repairs that are likely coming due so I can budget for upcoming investments in my car. Overall a great service center, but for assured service, call ahead for an appointment. read more

Tom was super-friendly, knowledgeable, and definitely knows how to calm someone who has no idea what their car is doing. Even better, I had taken my car to "the dealer" first, who started by telling me my radio was to blame for all my problems, then said it was "also" my alternator. When I declined the repair, they didn't trust my radio, and didn't reinstall it (it was sitting on my passenger seat). When I took my car to Tom, his technicians said there was nothing wrong with my radio and reinstalled it for me while performing my other repair. Definitely saved me the time and expense of replacing the radio, which had nothing wrong with it in the first place. See Tom, he'll make sure you land on your feet. Or wheels. I have spent over 30 years in the automotive industry and was amazed at how though and how great they performed the engine work on my 2003 VW Jetta VR6. This vehicle is a back up car for my family. The check engine light popped on and the car was running really rough. I took it to Wheaton Service Center on a recommendation and I am so glad I did. There is a gentleman by the name of Tom who addressed my problem with perfect accuracy.. Tom also did a complete preventative maintenance inspection and listed items I should eventually get taken care of. I have not seen this type of no pressure honestly in many years. A lot of reviews here have already stated what I believe to be true, but I thought I'd share an anecdote. I've actually been coming to Wheaton Service Center since I moved to the DC area because of the excellent quality of service and care with which they treat my 2001 VW Passat. I had scheduled an appointment this past Saturday and arrived much earlier than the shop opened and parked it in the first metered spot outside of the gates. I saw Tom (and he saw me) arrive in his '95 Audi around 7:40A. Around 7:50, one gentleman pulled in about two car lengths ahead of me and five minutes later brought another gentleman to parallel park right ahead of me, despite the fact that I was in a VW and waiting with my lights on. Right at 8AM, Tom opened the gates, the two gentleman scurried in, and Tom immediately walked right over to me and took my keys first. Not only do they do great work; they are great people. I would highly recommend this shop to anyone looking for maintenance on their VW. Their prices are competitive and they are willing to explain everything in as much detail as you want. read more

After years of going to dealerships and other independent VW shops, I've grudgingly accept that owning European meant paying for costly labor charges. Thankfully, Wheaton Service Center has shown me otherwise! Tom is knowledgeable and welcoming. I had positive experiences when making the appointment, when dropping the car off, and when picking up the car. Making an appointment was very easy. Tom was flexible and we quickly found a time that worked for me. Tom even gave me homework on what to check in my previous maintenance invoices. Dropping off the car was also pleasant and I found myself spending extra time just "talking cars" with Tom. When picking up the car, Wheaton Service Center stayed open for a little while longer than normal so I could pick up my car on the same day. Wow! My biggest surprise was with the price of the repairs. The service was hundreds lower than what I had come to expect, and my car purred as she hit the road. I have a 2000 Passat, and I live in College park. After being disappointed by the DARCAR shop in college park a few times, I found this place online . When I read these reviews, i was pretty surprised by how much people trust and like this shop, so I went to this service center today to check it out. The problem I had with my car is that the instruments panel lights don't turn on at night. It's a busy Friday morning, so there was a long line ahead of me. When i was waiting, Tom took a quick look at my car and found that the problem is actually due to my stupid mistake of not turning on the right headlights at night (my previous car doesn't have the fancy parking light). Tom also gave me some good advices on taking care of my car. So no money was spent and no opportunity was taken to see his fellow's skills, but Tom himself did an excellent job finding the problem and explaining the mechanism behind the problem. After talking with him for 20 minutes, I felt like i had known Tom for years. We talked as good friends. I never expected the mess of fixing a car would turn out to be such pleasant experience. These kind ppl saved me 1000s, not having to buy a new car, keeping my old 1994 VW on the road cheaply. Working miracles, even after I like a fool (I know better now) burst an oil gasket, and, ignoring the red oil lamp, drove around without a drop of oil in the engine. Tom is very knowledgeable and so chill to hang out with while waiting. He always has something interesting to say and that way your are not worried about your car and it's actually fun to have to sit and wait there. Until this week, we'd taken two VW's to Tom et al. for preventive and other service over the course of about 10 years. Today, we decided to discontinue bringing cars to them. Here's why: Our 2005 VW Jetta Wagon TDi needed its 100k service interval, which includes 31 items ranging from the basic (e.g., check battery, drive shaft boots; tire rotation) to moderate (onboard diagnostics) to complicated (e.g., timing belt change). We use the car primarily for long trips so we don't want to be stranded hours from home awaiting a tow truck. As we set up the appt, we specifically indicated an interest in the 100k service and Tom agreed to provide it. Arriving the next morning, he asks if we're here for the oil change. Nope, I says, 100k service, remember? Again, he agrees to provide it. After no word on the car status, I call midday on day 2 to check its status. Tom claims to have called the day before, but there's no indication of an incoming call on my cell, which we confirmed is the right number. Whatever. I ask what's up -- oh, the car needs this and that, and they'll take care of it by cob. We chat about whether this or that is part of the 100k service. He seems to be on it. I pick up the car late on day two and inspect the receipt. Of the 31 things in the service needing to be done for preventive care the only ones listed are an oil change, brake fluid, air filter, handbrake cable, cabin air filter. Not including the timing belt change, which we did at 80k for the reasons mentioned, that left about 15 things that hadn't been done -- like the fuel filter, tire rotation, cooling system check, etc. I called to say that we took the car offline for two days for him to provide preventive service at it appears he only did a few things. Tom claimed that they often do things that aren't on a line item, but as I asked about several items on the service interval list, it became clear that they didn't do them. Why quit them now? Because this is the third time we've taken a car in for something very specific along with oil changes and the like -- e.g., check the suspension/boots for creaking, fix the cruise control, do the 100k service -- and gotten shrugged shoulders at the end of it when only some things were done. Now we need to take the car to a dealer or some other shop in order to get the rest of the service for this interval done. Worse, we've developed that common grumbling sound in TDIs at cold start up that, although it fades after a minute or two, may signal starter or flywheel problems. Any observant mechanic who knows these cars would have heard it and addressed it. So, three strikes. It is a shame, as I've always preferred working with specialty shops to the big dealerships, as the latter are especially good at not listening and overcharging, but they get it right eventually. In this case, we get not listening and mediocre service in exchange for our loyalty. No longer. Update: Took the car to a local dealership that completed all of the other items for the maintenance interval, found/fixed the cold start-up issue (worn belt tensioner), and called when they said they would. Sorry to see you go, WSC. You're good people, but who has time for fooling around? read more

I'm from south Florida, so I have been taking my cars to this place called German Car Depot in Florida for almost a decade now. I took my 2003 Passat here to Wheaton Service Center because I'm living in Wheaton while doing my internship here Rockville for the season. The problem that my car had was that it rumbled after about 50 MPH. WSC determined that it was the spark plugs, there was apparently a mis-match (I got this car just a few months ago). They also stated that my car had the following issues: - leaking radiator fluid - bad timing belt - leaking brake fluid - cracked brake hoses - needs controls for the front tires - my 2 brake lights are out - right upper control links loose I decided to not have all these things taken care of here, and that I would just drive the car back home to Florida on 12/6 to get that serviced. I just had them change the plugs, they charged me $210.42 total. So then, I drive to Tennessee for Thanksgiving, and yes, my car stopped misfiring on the cylinders, but now my axle was giving me issues... my car was rumbling violently after about 60 MPH, during a snowstorm -- very scary... so then I take it to a place in Tennessee, and when they pulled the front left axle, the guy stated that the bearings and the whole 'mechanism' fell apart in his hands. I got a new front left axle and bearing in Tennessee for a total of $315. Then, I drive back from Tennessee to Maryland, and this morning when I take my car to Jiffy Lube, I told them about the leaks that the Wheaton Service Center told me about -- and they confirmed that this was NOT true at all! My car is NOT leaking radiator fluid/coolant, NOT leaking brake fluid, NOT leaking anything at all! The only thing they were not able to get to at Jiffy was my transmission fluid, but they confirmed that all of my fluids were ok... and they also inspect the serpentine belt, and they did not mention that it was in bad shape ... so I am NOT accusing WSC of lying to me, don't think that. I just think that it's odd that after I brought my car here for 1 thing, another thing went bad, and that all the leaks they said I had on that day, I mysteriously do NOT have any longer. My suggestion to you would be to bring your car here as a second opinion. For example, take it to the VW dealer first for an estimate and for their VW people to fully inspect the car, and then come to WSC as a second opinion, letting them know that you took it to the VW place before going there and that you are comparing prices. The guy at the register (I forgot his name) is a little sarcastic with his tone and the things that he says, so don't think he is rude or anything. read more

This shop is excellent! But first, here's a story worth re-telling. MegaDealer acquires Local Dealer. Key staff leave, retire, or are terminated. Quality of service spirals downward. MegaDealer Fib Factor (MDFF) runs high. Customers driven away. This customer then found Wheaton Service Center. It's a new beginning! After reaching an impasse with MegaDealer, I took my Passat and its chronic problem to Wheaton Service Center. The Wheaton Service Center team fixed the problem. No drama, no delays, no tall tales. They just fixed it! Not only that, I learned more about my car in the 15 minutes I spoke with Tom than I had in the prior nine years with Local- and then MegaDealer! Do yourself and your VW a favor. It's difficult to find a reputable mechanic but I have found an excelllent one in WSC. My fiance and I had just bought our first VW and were hoping to find a trusting dealer to help with repairs. We were thrilled that there was a places just 3 blocks from our new home. She brought the car in and after her 1 hour visit she wished to never return because Tom made her feel uncomfortable. I supported this and did not like the things he had said so I picked up the car when it was finished. When he found out who my fiance was he proceeded to make very inappropriate remarks about her. This was so unprofessional and I wished to not interact with him again. On top of that he did not order my part in time and had to keep it an extra day and I had to take off work another due to no transportation and he provided no discount or compensation. 1 month later I called to see if I could have one of the service workers install a part for me that I had purchased somewhere else. His reply was so condescending as to why they would want to install something that was not purchased from them.I am not very knowledgeable when it comes to cars therefore I am pretty trusting when I am told information about mine and he made me feel belittled with his rude reply. I would encourage people to try and look for other places before using Toms poor communication style that make people feel uncomfortable and not trust their judgment. read more

I'm not super proactive with the maintenance on my Volkswagen Jetta. My coworker said the same for his girlfriend, who's get a VW Bug and he insisted, go to this place, they are really good and honest. I had a couple warning lights on in my dash (head light, exhaust system) but the final straw came when slammed something in my trunk and broke the lock. I called them panicked and they said they could look at it first thing the next day. I drove up to Silver Spring that afternoon, they locked my car in the garage said they we get to it first thing in the morning. They called me early the next morning with an estimated cost, and a thorough explanation of my issues. Late afternoon, I went to pick up my car, and they informed me that they ran a lot of diagnositc tests, and that they could not find any issue with my exhaust system, so they reset my warning light and did not charge me. I really really appreciated that honest, and will use and recommend this place over and over in the future. Also, there's an Enterprise rental car a couple blocks away so if you don't want to deal with metro or rides, it's a good option. I got a compact car for 24 hours for a total of $34 with tax and gas, not bad. read more

These guys are the best! I brought my car in for some general maintenence and mentioned i thought I might be due for front brakes and there was a slight hesitation in acceleration. Tom said it was probably spark plugs. A couple hours later I get a call and he says my front brakes are fine and that my spark plugs were in need of replacing. They could have easily sold me on brakes but didnt. When i pick my car up it ran like the day i bought it, Tom got my VW Rabbit tuned up and running like a champ. Service oriented, knowledge and professional staff. I took my VW GTI here for several years after it was out of warranty. Their prices are reasonable and cheaper than other quotes I had gotten. They are also able to clearly explain vehicle issues in an clear, understandable way to someone who is not a car maintenance expert. Nicely metro-accessible.
