Have stayed at Mercure Whately Hall twice in last 18 months. A very historic building right in the heart of the town. Many period features in the main building, including secret tunnels and reports of ghosts. Looks like it was part of THF classic hotels, back in the late 70's. Some of the features remain. Some look, tired, but being solid to start with, still give pleasure. Now part of Accor Hotels the Mercure brand fits into their mid-market brand, above Novotel, below, Sofitel. Actually, way below Sofitel, but good at what it does, nonetheless.
This hotel was full of history, an oasis of calm and beautiful gardens in the town centre. Ample on site car parking and competent staff who were keen to please. Well appointed rooms. Our historic Executive room had fridge, digital TV, trouser press, iron, nice linens and was spacious ( albeit rumoured to be haunted).
Breakfast excellent, with artisan French breads and extensive choice typical of Accor. Staff great struggling to work with the limitations of the facility. Accord people excellent, regardless of the brand they represent. read more
