We had a 12:00pm appointment. The 2 very kind workers that were there were unfortunately unable to unlock the doors to give us the kayaks that we reserved. They were on time but their manager/supervisor was bringing them a key. Unfortunately for us, their manager didn't arrive until 1:45 almost 2 hours after our scheduled appointment time. The 2 workers were very apologetic with us responding it's not their fault. We would like to say to the management, do better!! How dare you have people wait for your slow behinds!! it was extremely hot and very inconveniencing to your patrons. And to make matters worse we didn't even get offered a discount for our inconvenience!! If offered a discount it would have at Least showed you had some professionalism but alas you didn't. Had you shown just an ounce of professionalism I would have possibly considered giving you another try. I wouldn't recommend Whalon Lake Kayak rental to my dog. Ugly, eyesore of a lake. Perhaps in the evening, it could be pleasant. But any other time it looks more like an industrial pit that is looped by a well maintained trail. A big lake is in Naperville, popular with people and dogs. It has a few trails around it. Whalon Lake isn't like the kind that has a beach, but it still has many opportunities for recreation. Fishing is one of the popular activities. There's also paved paths for bicycling and jogging. Cool place to hang around. It has kind of a unique location along the border of Bolingbrook. The lake is on the county line. It doesn't have a beach. This isn't the kind of lake for swimming. Fishing is one of the main reasons people come. Those not wanting to kill the fish are probably coming with four legged friends. It has a dog park next to it that's nice and big. The problem is permits are required. Good place to come and chill. My parents are the ones who introduced me to this lake and the surrounding trail. Living right next to the trail, we never had really explored anything walking distance from our house before. However, once my parents started walking the trail every day (even my dad despite his allergies!), they couldn't stop. They excitedly told me to join them one day, and it has now become my #1 outdoor running spot. It's not just a lake - there are beautiful views throughout the trail. As you pass, you run by the dog park, go through a stretch of woods, and run through the plain fields. I don't even pay for a gym membership during stretches of the year because I run or bike here every morning. This park also has everything you could want. They've got plenty of picnic tables and grills that are super popular in the summertime. They've got a beautiful gazebo (where my friends and I took prom pictures!). Deer make regular appearances around the lake and in surrounding houses' backyards. The lake is beautiful and you can go boating if you'd like. You can picnic around the lake. Flocks of geese and ducks visit also. You can watch the sunset. There are beautiful bridges if you run far enough. It's very peaceful and you get the "getaway" vibe, and if you live really close, don't even have to travel too far for it. It's amazing how everything is connected once you start exploring the lake and everything around it. We may not have mountains, but if you're looking for something nearby that offers a ton, here it is! My favorite spot :) read more

My parents go here alllllllll the time. I mean like, at least 3-4 times a week, and during the summer, even more. All I hear all the time is "Whalon Lake, blah blah blah, Whalon Lake." I always thought it was in Lemont or something for some reason, but today my parents brought me along for one of their visits, and I realized I'd been here quite a few times before. First of all, it's not in Lemont. You probably know that already if you're on this Yelp page, because you probably looked for parks in Naperville or Bolingbrook, but it's news to me now that I know what this place is called. It's in Naperville, along the border of Naper/Bolingbrook, and is connected to Hidden Lakes, a little nature reserve that is in Bolingbrook. Today's trip was meant to tire out our dog, so we just walked around for awhile. The "lake," which was actually probably more like a large pond, was gorgeous. There were groups of people on boats fishing, and it was so quiet and peaceful. Nothing gets me more excited than nature, because it brings me down to Earth and relaxes me in the midst of the stress of day-to-day tasks. There was a trail going around the "lake," for walking and biking, and there were also some roller bladers as well. The trail detoured a little bit and connected with Hidden Lakes, which was also a little group of large ponds and a parking area. I hung out here a LOT in high school, I realized today, but always entered through the Hidden Lakes side and had no idea the connecting area was its own park. Whalon Lake is gorgeous, peaceful, and a unique spot in the suburbs. If you're driving down Royce Road or are just looking for something nature-centric to do, this is a great spot for that! read more

Adaptive Adventures held another ride and paddle event this time at Whalon Lake. The park is a unique spot because it is in both DuPage and Will Counties. The park has a multitude of bike/walking paths as well as a lake in Will County with fishing and kayaking. Big dogs, little dogs, short ones, fat ones and a few dozen deer, too. The views were pretty sweet at the dog park today... too bad I don't have a dog. Womp, womp. I like to come here on runs when it gets cooler out... okay, I don't actually 'like' the running part, but I do love the park. The trails are surrounded by prairie/ meadow area that holds a fenced in dog run at one end (with a separate area for big dogs and little dogs so there's no fighting- yay, friends!) and at the other end a man made 'lake' that you can fish in with a permit. If you're lucky you might even get to see a few pooches going for a dip and having the time of their lives! The only minor drawback are the umpty-billion power lines that run through the place. They make some pretty loud buzzing sounds and on occasions you'll here a loud zap. It's kinda scurry. Not having a dog, I can't really say how this place measures up to other dog parks, but for puppy peepin' on my run, it's tops! read more

I love the dog park here. You do need a membership and you have to show your dogs rabies tag to get it. I think its $35 or $40 a year. If you go after july 1st there is a discount rate for the remainder of the year. It is divided into 2 sections for small dogs and larger dogs and it has lots of room for them to run and play. There is also places to walk and brush areas for the dogs to play in if they like that. read more

I'm not sure who gets more out of coming here: me or my dog. This is a large (8 acres) fenced-in dog park located in the Whalen Lake Forest Preserve. Drinking water, shade, and benches are provided. There is also an area just for small dogs. A yearly permit is required, it is around $25, but definitely worth it, because it is good for any of the dog parks in Will County. Also, a trail runs the length of the fence row. Sometimes it can get kind of crowded during peak hours, but even then, there is still plenty of room for all that pooch. My dog gets excited about 1/2 mile away, and then as we pull into the drive and approach, he nearly jumps out of the car. The area around the dog park is also very fitness friendly, a bike/running path circles Whalen Lake. read more

I've taken our dog here a couple times now. We used to go to the Springbrook Dog Park in Naperville, but since we live in Will we figured we should get a pass for a Will county park. The Springbrook one honestly has more space and way more area to walk, but I really like the trail at Whalen. A park's a park for a dog, though, right? She's able to run off leash and it really tires her out! A little ways down the road from the park is a lake, and we've let her swim in it before, but I'm not sure if that's allowed (No signs though!) I've been going to Whalen Lake Dog Park ever since our twin Brittany Spaniels were pups. They're 7 years old now. They absolutely love the layout of the fenced in area, allowing them to run through thick trees, brush and weeds as if they were out in the fields actually hunting. Plenty of open area so they can really run full speed. A nice walking path goes around the entire 8 acre park so I get great exercise as well. Another bonus, there are two sides of the park, one for small dogs and one for larger dogs so the breeds don't clash due to their difference in size. My dogs get so much out of socializing with the other dogs and its a nice opportunity for me to chat with other dog owners. The park is well kept and the surrounding woods/water are beautiful. This is among the most beautiful places in Bolingbrook, and it's only accessible through Naperville, unless you walk from Hidden Lakes, which is tough but doable. It's a paved trail that encircles Whalon Lake and offers views of the Greene Valley landfill (much more appealing than it sounds), a quarry, and the aforementioned Hidden Lakes. There's also access to biking trails, a dog park, and there's a canoe launch for summertime boating. The bugs are plentiful but this is nature after all, and they do not ruin the experience whatsoever. All in all a great place to spend a couple hours just walking, at least for me. read more

My dog loves it here! There is plenty of room for her to run around and a trail around the outside of the park area for me to walk with her...although officially it is marked as NOT a trail due to some drama between some owners and the park district a year or two ago. There is a grassy area cut short as well as some areas of tall grass and forested areas. A water fountain is located nearby to fill up bowls. For the most part, owners are conscientious of doggy behavior and general manners (removing a dog-bully, picking up poop, etc.), although there are always some exceptions to that. I am a person who is very obsessed with my four-legged child, so most things I do on the weekends revolve around her. This is a really wonderful little dog park to go to. I can just let her go and she has a ball, and I can feel good that we're both getting fresh air and exercise. And she can sniff to her heart's content. I don't worry about anything happening to her, because this is a well-maintained park and everyone I come across is a responsible pet owner. I have a good friend in Naperville so I pick her up, along with her little four-legged, and we go here together. Lots of nice people (and other four-leggeds) to be met here, which is fun if you genuinely love being around both dogs and dog people, which I do. read more
