The Sitka hotel has the charm and quaintness you would want and expect when visiting Alaska. Our…read moreroom had a small kitchenette which was nice to have. The location was perfect. We enjoyed how close it was to restaurants, shops, marina, parks and the beach. I would recommend staying here!

I hate to be the bearer of bad news, but this place is a joke. Upon arrival, the employee, instead…read moreof saying something like "Welcome in, have a seat in the lobby, but I can't check you in until 3PM"...they stormed past us and yelled "no check in until 3!" Okay, I didn't have a problem with 3PM, I just need to store my luggage for an hour. I put my luggage in their closet, came back for it an hour later, and it was gone. The employee left and wouldn't help find it. No one returned to the front. I called the desk, hoping to lure the employee. No luck. It took my friend, a local, calling to get them to come help, a half hour after this luggage search started. It was a mess. Finally located my luggage an hour later. And to make matters worse, our room wasn't ready for check in until 5PM... That's two hours late from their reservation guarantee. At this time, there were around 6 upset guests still waiting with us. The room itself was fine. But not worth the $230 a night. I only stayed one night and will not be back. The behavior from the employee was baffling. This review doesn't encapsulate every single interaction I had with them- that would be a looong and unhappy review. I can give it two stars rather than one due to the prime location.

I would love to give this place 5 stars and am trying to be fair here, but since the main focus of…read morethis business is the lodging part (according to the name) I have to be true to the purpose of these reviews. Summary: Food is very, very good, staff is friendly for the most part, but the rooms are less than clean. The good: the food is very good (for Hoonah or anywhere else) and this is one of the only places in Hoonah to have a sit-down meal. They bake their own treats like muffins, brownies, cookies, etc. which are great for breakfast or dessert. The establishment is right on the water so you can stroll out at anytime and appreciate Alaska's beauty from just steps outside the door, or perhaps even from some of the rooms. My room faced the road so I am unsure of this. The bad: my room was one of the dirtiest I have ever slept in. There was a coffee stain on my wall that looked as if someone threw an entire cup/pot of coffee at the wall and no one so much as looked at it let alone cleaned it up. Nasty is the only word that comes to mind when contemplating my room cleanliness. That being said, I do believe that I got the last room available during my stay, and I was happy to have it as there was nowhere else. Perhaps I got that room that all hotels/motels have but keep as a last resort to occupy. The bathroom cleanliness also left something to be desired. In all fairness, I did not think the rest of the establishment was overly unclean/dirty, but I will say that the standards in Alaska are on a different level than the lower 48. Perhaps I'm just a prissy, spoiled mainlander. Dunno.
