This branch of Waterstones is located on Deansgate in Bolton, it is a relatively small branch of…read morethe large book chain, and because of this, the store might feel more cluttered and slightly harder to get around, as they are trying to pack everything into such a small space, giving the store a poor feel. The store has a slightly old-fashioned nature, even more so than other branches such as Gateshead Metrocentre and Manchester Arndale, which are the two other branches of Waterstones, I have visited recently. The staff didn't seem too helpful or friendly which was a shame, and the overall selection at the store was okay at best, it certainly wasn't fantastic. Considering factors with the overall feel of the store as well as the poor service and selection, I sadly feel Bolton's Waterstones store deserves a single one-star rating.

They have a great range of books and always worth a look-in to see what they have on their bargains…read morestand. They do lack a little in the Sci-Fi section of which I am an avid reader however the books are categorised and easy to locate what your looking for. Thye also sell a range of sweets, drinks and the shop always seems to be relatively tidy. The staff are friendly and are always willing to help.

The thing you need to remember about WH Smith's is it's great for absolutely everything except…read morebooks. Which is ironic, considering it's partly a bookstore. Okay, I'm not being fair - that depends entirely on the kind of books you like. If it's bestsellers; chick-lit, celebrity autobiographies, those 'painful memories' stories about child abuse, some frothy comedy or a bodice-ripper, you'll be fine for books here. However if you want stationery, greeting cards, DVDs, art supplies, even toys or a vast array of niche magazines, then you'll be spoilt for choice. This Trafford Centre branch is perfect for a mid-afternoon stop-off as it has a Superdrug nearby for cheap soft drinks, and a fountain just outside to sit on the edge of to read your new magazine. And believe me, in the hectic crowded atmosphere of the Trafford Centre, it's more than necessary.

This is the only shop in Chorlton that sells brand new books. Although the bars on the windows…read moredon't entice you into this bookshop, I would advice you to go in and have a browse. Although this is quite a small store they manage to pack quite a lot in, including a range of current and classic novels. These are shelved around the edge of the front room, and in the middle there is a table with many discounted books ranging from travel guides to recipe books. In the back room there are non-fiction books including foreign language books and dictionaries. The staff are really friendly, and if they don't have the book you're looking for then they can order it for you. They also have a gift wrapping service, and a great selection of arty cards including ones with Quentin Blake illustrations which I love. Let's hope that the giants of Amazon and co. do not force this lovely traditional bookshop out of business.

I've only visited half a dozen or so times but the fact I've never left empty-handed speaks volumes about the owner's selection. As well as a lots of classic British and American fiction, there's a strong, wee selection of African-American fiction, womens fiction, crime noir and books by critically acclaimed local authors. If I remember rightly, it was Chorlton Bookshop where I bought a copy of Jackie Kay's excellent debut novel Trumpet many moons ago. Since then, the Chorlton based author has produced some compelling books of poetry and short stories but I'm still holding out for her second novel. While it is only a small store, it does feel slightly nicer than other locations as they've replaced the outdated carpet with a nice wooden floor, which makes the store more cleaning and more appealing. The selection is OK, although it is small in some areas they did have a nice selection of books and stationery. The drinks fridge and selection of newspapers/magazines was smaller than an average WHSmith store. 3* - Good store for books/stationery or visiting the Post Office but they don't seem to have the whole WHSmith offering you'd expect.

Mid-sized branch of Smith's. Good range of books with 2 for 1 style offers also cards, stationery,…read morelottery, sweets, magazines etc. When I visited there was a long queue because someone was having problems with understanding their lottery ticket so as I was in a bit of a rush I put what I was going to buy back on the shelf and left without purchasing. I suppose that's just one of those things that can happen though so you can't blame the staff for it. It's a typical WH Smith's really and does exactly what it says on the tin!

I find W H Smith stores in general a little 'gloomy' inside with dark interiors and subtle lighting and the merchandise is sometimes a little cluttered. The staff are helpful and efficient.
