Rick Steve's German Guidebook highly recommends this place and the town, for good reason. My feeling is that this place is not usually a place for children but they could not have been more accommodating. We had one room with a Mosel view (#8) and another overlooking the Square (#7). The inn itself is a sight and the main square is incredibly quaint. They also rent apartments on the square which would have been good for our group but I am glad we stayed in the main house. The terrace is a great place to enjoy the river and the wine. Again, not likely a typical place for children but it was very early in the season and everyone was so nice and accommodating. The owner is super nice and the restaurant is great. Breakfast in the main hall is a treat as the room evokes the feeling of being in a Knights hall in a Castle. We enjoyed an excellent meal one night in the restaurant as well.

Their onboard menu offerings ranged from ice cream to chocolates, and full-on sausage lunch plates with beers. The guided tour was conducted in (pre-recorded) English, and it takes you downriver past historic castles and vineyards.

It is beautifully positioned, looking out over the valley. There is a bit of a walk into town, but that's part of the charm; you can wander along the riverside, watching the boats go by.....the castle looks very romantic and picturesque in the evenings. If you have a small child they'll love the little play area on the walk into town. Cochem is a fun place to perambulate, lots of narrow streets and cobbles. The walk up to the castle is great fun too! The hotel also has a fun swimming pool, with rather surreal trompe l'oeil!

The location is great during peak travel season since it's quieter than the riverside hotels, etc., which can get noisy. There is parking available, within a short distance from the Villa. We used a TomTom GPS, and it found a way through the narrow one-lane streets, and parking was nearby after dropping luggage. The owners are nice, helpful, and accommodating. We had a pleasant stay, and we enjoyed a local Mosel wine from the kitchen when we returned to our room. Don't let the narrow streets scare you...you'll get there...just take it slow and watch the pedestrians. The rooms could use a fan during the summer, especially the upper rooms with only one side of windows, thus no cross-ventilation, such as the Moseltal (spelling?) room. Moseltal is nearly unbearable sleeping without a fan during summer. Even the lower rooms could use one when it's warm outside.

We had a great corner room 2 floors up so we had a nice view of the Rhine and the ancient city wall. This was our first stop in Germany on our first visit to the country,. The bathroom was a bit different. The shower is kind of cosy (the doors close into the corner furthest into the room and if not closed completely water gets all over the floor). Everything is tiled so it's not a problem. The room is large and comfortable. The bed is low and very firm but since we'd flown over from the US the previous night, it was perfectly comfortable to get a full night's sleep. This hotel is located at the north end of the town of Oberwesel so it is a great starting point to start walking to look at the ancient wall along the river or explore the town. We walked along the wall (it's got great walkways), up in the towers, then through town. When we returned we decided to dine in the restaurant for dinner. We were tired so close was better. As we were seated and placed our order, we noticed that all the other patrons were speaking German which is always a good sign. We didn't notice any foreign tourists (they're usually somewhat obvious). We ordered traditional German food and it was really tasty. Same for breakfast in the morning. Lots of Germans and good authentic (so I would assume) food. The family hosts were friendly and kind. The son was our server for dinner and spoke great English. The mother and (maybe) daughter took care of breakfast and spoke less well but still did a great job. We loved our visit here and would defiantly return again.
