What a wonderful stop…read more We were visiting Shakespeare's birthplace, and after enriching our minds we definitely needed a drink. Without hesitation our guide immediately recommended the Old Thatch Tavern. First of all, it is centrally located and easy to find. Once there you're taking by the decor and homely feeling. The staff were amazing. I wasn't drinking hard liquor and they guided me through a variety of Apple ciders that were delightful. They made the entire experience 1000% better. Their advice and knowledge really made the stop one of the best drinking experiences we had in England. Little by little more members of our crew continues showing up and eventually we had a full blown part going. Again, it was a blast! I can't wait to go again, make a stop at the Old Thatch Tavern and relive some of the memories.

Had a lovely visit to Stratford-upon-Avon for my birthday…read more This pub looked lovely from the outside and we headed straight there after our delicious meal in a nearby restaurant. It was 10.25 on Wednesday evening, February 25th, but we were turned away by the young barman, as he said he had already called last orders and wasn't letting anybody else in. Now, my husband and I were very disappointed, as everywhere else in the town had been so welcoming and accommodating. We walked across the road and had a few drinks in another bar, as there are plenty of nice places to choose from, BUT, if I was the owner of this establishment, I would not be best pleased at young bar staff turning my customers away. That is a lot of revenue to lose over the year if this is happening every night, especially with the cost of living at its current high and the daily struggle that pubs face to stay profitable!! Maybe a bit of staff re-training wouldn't go amiss and a reminder of who pays the wages!!

I admit I am biased, this is my local pub. In my biased opinion they serve the best real ales in…read moreStratford bar none. The pub is wonderfully located off the beaten track in the Old Town part of Stratford and is a regular haunt for many of the locals. There is a pool table and dart board and on various days of the week hosts a number of local leagues which merely adds to its genuine feel of a good old fashioned English pub. There is a large garden which basks in sunshine throughout most of the day (when the sun shines) and when it rains a large permanent canopy keeps you dry. The kitchen never fails to produce wonderful food and on certain nights of the week offers a special themed menu, sometimes Curry night, sometimes Gourmet Burger night and sometimes fish night. Every other Sunday the pub hosts a quiz night which is good enough to challenge the Little Grey Cells but relaxed enough to be a fun quiz to take part in. And all in aid of the Air Ambulance. The New Bulls Head (formerly the West End) is quite simply the best pub in Stratford.

Food is served lunch and evening, with the fish and chips being a locals favourite, plus home made pie of the day. Also showing Sky Sports with a pool table and darts board.

Now when you visit the countryside you don't really expect to find a bar as a city dweller might…read moreexpect it but No. 1 really was just that. Feeling a little swanky at it but still, cheaper than most of the traditional pubs surrounding it, a good area to get up and strut your stuff, and close enough the other aspects of "nightlife" in town (not to mention close to bed if you've opted for one of the travel lodges). No.1 felt like the perfect start to an active stratford night. Now i wouldn't normally review a place i had spent such a small amount of time in (without much of a yelp head on for it either - no food, no carefully laid tests for the staff). But one act from the staff compels me: We were walking into town, unsure where would be open, it was really very late. Two intimidating looking bouncers are stood outside No1 (as is their job). We pause across the road, wondering at a country bar that needs bouncers like that, i was about to walk on when they bellowed, "don't worry its nice in here, come on over!" Both with beaming smiles, one walked us in and pointed us to a good spot to sit and the other instructed my friend as to where to smoke (out the front it seemed was less windy that night). I was amazed, to be honest i'm used to bouncers being short tempered and sometimes pretty brash with you (thats just part of city life!). This is the first review i've penned where the security made a place worth visiting for me, well done guys!!
