They make feel like if you don't pay the money, then you don't care about your child. We completed most of the program with Huntington Learning Center for ACT, and my child did not increase 1 point. In fact, my child went down 1 point from the initial testing. My child liked the teacher the worked with, but all other staff at the center seemed to be fake. Moreover, all the truly seem to care about is getting your money. Speaking of money, I'm not sure where the money goes. The facility looks old and rundown, including the learning areas and powder room. Overall, my child LOST all confidence in their abilities. It took a private tutor to correct the damage. Luckily, my child ended up increasing 5 points with a private tutor, which is more than the "3-4 point average increase" Huntington assured me my child would get. I would strongly recommend that you go elsewhere for your ACT needs. My child had a very bad experience at a center that seems to be run by people who only care about your money, and not your child. Beware of all the money you will waste at this learning center.

My daughter started the program in January with D's and F's and by the end of the school year she was getting A's, B's and C's. Lastly, they were very accommodating to schedule changes. Overall, we are very happy with Huntington and would recommend them to any parent that has a struggling student. It was worth every penny!

During Covid my son did online learning. Before that year he was extremely behind in writing and…read moreslightly behind in math. After doing many hours at Sylvan through out the online year he had completed writing all the way through ninth grade, 2 years above his grade level and was working on 8th and 9 th grade math. When he went back into school this year as a seventh grader he's taking eighth grade math and honors reading. I attribute all of this to Sylvan. I have a daughter that's 11 years younger. She was behind in reading in first grade. We signed her up for Sylvan. She did it 3 to 5 times a week even in the summer. She caught up and Advanced in no time. What the school couldn't do Sylvan was able to. That Child advanced so much that she was able to start college at Kent State in ninth grade as a 14 year old. (College Credit Plus AKA free college) By the time she was 17 she had her masters from Kent state and taught organic chemistry for Kent state as a paid employee. I give Sylvan ALL the credit. Is Sylvan cheap no not by any means. However, in the long run it fully paid off with free college from the government which anyone can qualify if they're smart enough or they hire Sylvan to help accomplish this goal.

Even if they emailed back to say they can't refund the money, I would be fine with that, but NO RESPONSE seems intentional. UPDATE: Immediately after writing this review I suddenly got an email saying "you've been refunded, it takes a few days", no apology or explanataion. Wonderful! It's mildly hilarious that this got dubbed "Alumni Weekend"-- I would say "Commencement" is clearly…read morethe main event. But Oberlin really does it hella-cheap-style by combining the two and turning Oberlin (the town) instantaneously into the craziest, most overstuffed sausage of a quiet Ohio town. That said, I enjoyed Commencement/Alumni Weekend FAR more as a student rather than a graduating student, when you can enjoy Illumination, BBQs, and other beginning-of-summer-but-still-at-school activities without the mental weight of knowing your parents (and step-parents and grandparents ad nauseum) are either in tow or desperately seeking you out. I realized this when I found Illumination to be positively breathtaking when I first saw it (see Kevin S.'s description) and just sort of a blur the next. Side note: Nothing like watching Obies age. The ten-year-reunion dance at the 'Sco, with its herd of 42-year-old aging hippies and nerds (at one point I had written "38-year-old"-- bad math!) dancing spasmodically to the tunes of the early nineties both warmed my heart and put me on notice.

Illumination night, Alumni Weekend. If you're a senior, it's a sweet sayonara under the canopy of multicolored lights augmented by the first few fireflies of the Ohio summer. If you're an underclassperson staying behind, it's a chance to pre-savor the bittersweet. If you're an alum, it's an awkward dance of avoidance and quest, finding the ones you miss and love, or missed loving, while avoiding the pretentious, the too painful to talk to, or the insufferable. If you're on staff or a townie it's an extra ritual to kick off your summer, a vivid resetting of the clock and a harbinger of quiet warm weeks without all those damn students. Winding the night on the steps of Finney to the tentative funkiness of the steel drum band will always be there in the back of your mind when you hear or say that word, Oberlin.
